[05:09:06] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Darke
[05:09:36] <Darke> Admittedly it was, like, 6 hours ago so I didn't notice, but still. *grin*
[05:10:10] * Servus looks confused as always
[05:11:36] <matto> Severus!!
[05:12:07] <Servus> servus iussu lethe?

[14:37:11] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[14:37:48] <Colourless> um... hi...
[14:38:03] <DarkeZzz> Greetings.
[14:38:28] <Colourless> YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE!
[14:38:35] <DarkeZzz> Yes, the channel is *quite* bare, and I'm... err... well... supposed to be asleep. *grin*
[14:38:57] * DarkeZzz got distracted by the LB interview on gamespy. *grin*
[14:40:12] <Colourless> today/yesterday for us in .au was rather quiet indeed
[14:41:42] <Colourless> looks like fingolfin didn't remember to update 'all' the pages to use PNG instead of GIF :-)
[14:43:41] <DarkeZzz> Like how the forum page has a exult_logo.gif? *grin*
[14:44:21] <Colourless> no, there is actually a reason for that to be a gif. I'm talking about something else, something obvious :-)
[14:47:50] * DarkeZzz erms... oh, the front page, cheat.gif? *grin*
[14:48:39] <Colourless> :-)
[14:53:04] <Colourless> no just why didn't anyone answer the U8 tile size question?
[14:53:14] <Colourless> s/no/now/
[14:53:19] --> Dark-Star has joined #exult
[14:55:14] <DarkeZzz> u8 tilesize question?
[14:55:21] <Colourless> yes
[14:55:39] * DarkeZzz ohs, err... he forgot, or something. *grin*
[15:22:18] --- Dark-Star is now known as Dark-Star|away
[15:22:25] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("brb")
[15:34:30] --> Rixa has joined #exult

[15:48:23] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to wjp
[15:48:24] <wjp> hi
[16:09:41] --> Colourless has joined #Exult
[16:09:41] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[16:11:10] <wjp> hi Ryan
[16:11:17] <Colourless> hi
[16:13:04] <Rixa> I recall someone here said he has the Ultima IX: Dragon Edition..
[16:13:55] <Rixa> I just got one, but the 4cd case looks kind of strange. No cover paper at all on a transparent case and on the other side just an ad for Ultima Online 2.
[16:14:05] <wjp> same as mine
[16:14:09] <Rixa> I'm wondering if a cover is missing.
[16:14:09] <Colourless> same here
[16:14:14] <Colourless> never had a 'cover'
[16:14:14] <Rixa> ok then.
[16:14:35] <wjp> I think I've seen several fan-made covers on a forum somewhere
[16:14:41] <Rixa> looks weird for a special edition.
[16:15:07] <wjp> it does, yes :/
[16:43:33] <jer|w0rk> re: dragon edition - mine was the same as well in the US -- no cover at all
[16:51:15] <-- Rixa has left IRC (Remote closed the connection)
[17:08:27] --- wjp is now known as wjp|away
[17:14:42] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("casts invisibility")
[18:43:27] --> Zxcvb has joined #exult
[18:43:32] <Zxcvb> how do I compile CVS?
[18:43:41] <Zxcvb> there is no autogen.sh or configure?
[18:46:22] <DarkeZzz> Exult or pentagram? Exult has an `./autogen.sh`, pentagram a `./bootstrap`.
[18:46:54] * DarkeZzz returns to his sonumbulation. Insomnia is not fun.
[18:56:26] <Zxcvb> ah, you have to use sh autogen.sh
[18:56:37] <Zxcvb> not ./autogen.sh
[18:59:11] <DarkeZzz> You don't have correct permissions on it then, it should be at least 555, mine's 755. I'm presuming you're on a unix box though, rather then mingw or similar. *grin* Though I'm definately gone now.
[19:03:26] --> Servus has joined #exult
[19:04:13] <Servus> ( Shhh... Be Vwery Vwery Qwuiet, Servus is here )
[19:04:54] <Zxcvb> can one set of game files be shared among all users?
[19:05:07] <Zxcvb> or must each user have their own copy of the static directory?
[19:06:13] <Servus> isnt the static directory static read-only, and the gamedat directory where all the... game data takes place?
[19:06:27] <Zxcvb> should be
[19:06:49] <Zxcvb> I thought .exult was where all the game data was
[19:06:55] <Servus> well play the game a bit and see if any timestamps in the static folder were updated :-)
[19:07:20] <Servus> it should have timestamps for file : created, modified, and accesses
[19:08:04] <Zxcvb> it's F11 for the jive intro, right?
[19:08:54] <Servus> no clue :-)
[19:09:31] <Zxcvb> you know about that one, right?
[19:09:47] <Servus> in the real game, yes
[19:10:10] <Servus> serpent hissssssjive or somesuch... perhaps manimal too
[19:11:25] <Dark-Star|away> IIRC, "serpent manimal" was without SS extension, "serpent hisssss jive" was with SS
[19:11:48] * Dark-Star|away ponders
[19:11:53] --- Dark-Star|away is now known as Dark-Star
[19:26:34] <Zxcvb> serpent manimal was for cheating with SI
[19:26:40] <Zxcvb> serpent pass is cheating without SI
[19:26:52] <Zxcvb> jive intro is intro hisss jive
[19:27:03] <Zxcvb> normal intro is intro hisss
[19:27:26] <Zxcvb> what happened to fmsynth sound?
[19:31:29] <Dark-Star> aaah I think then it was "endgame hissss jive" to directly start the endgame or something . . .
[19:32:17] <Zxcvb> endgame was just endgame hisss
[19:32:40] <Dark-Star> hmm but I remember this "jive" option from somewhere...
[19:32:40] <Zxcvb> what is the best way to get digital audio for exult 1.1.0CVS?
[19:32:44] <Servus> they probably made up those silly keywords just so people like us would look silly in chatrooms talking about it years later;)
[19:33:00] <Zxcvb> Dark-Star: for the intro, it's intro hisss
[19:33:07] <Zxcvb> Dark-Star: for the jive intro, it's intro hisss jive
[19:33:10] <Servus> yes, remember Lord Brit said "What up Holmes" and the guardian said his face was "most muppet-like" when you watched the jive intro
[19:33:16] <Zxcvb> Dark-Star: for the endgame, it's endgame hisss
[19:33:18] <Dark-Star> ah ok, that was it...
[19:33:23] <Zxcvb> anyone?
[19:33:31] <Zxcvb> what's the best way to use the digital music in exult 1.1.x?
[19:33:39] <Zxcvb> the sound packs, or the ogg?
[19:33:44] <Dark-Star> "Thou must know that my face is most muppet like" or something like that, yes, I remember :)
[19:34:04] <Servus> dont think we know zxcvb, but all the nerds love .ogg so it mustnt be terrible
[19:34:30] <Dark-Star> I would take the OGG files, they were recorded on exactly the hardware where the U7 MIDIs sound best (MT-32?)
[19:35:18] <Dark-Star> or at least that's what I heard . . .
[19:35:20] <Zxcvb> Dark-Star: those are for both music and sound effects, right?
[19:35:21] <Servus> the hardware where a midi sounds best? once its converted to midi... it has a lot of options :-) my father has a $15,000 midi soundsystem hehe
[19:35:45] <Dark-Star> hmm... good question....
[19:36:27] <Servus> you can acquire professional foley tapes and use the sound fx within for truely nice-sounding sfx however... origin didnt expect us to have very good sound equipment back in the day :-)
[19:37:19] <Dark-Star> Servus: You know, I actually meant "the audio hardware for which the Ultima 7 MIDI files were written". Don't have much experience with MIDI though.
[19:37:25] <Servus> and of course midi music can be rendered on high-end equipment that uses real instrument samples to give a very lifelike performance
[19:37:48] <Dark-Star> Zxcvb: Seems the OGG files are only the music
[19:37:54] <Zxcvb> can't the MT-32 be emulated?
[19:38:01] <Servus> ack zxcvb!
[19:38:23] <Zxcvb> there was fm synth in the windows version, which would emulate an adlib
[19:38:46] <Zxcvb> Servus: why?
[19:38:46] <Zxcvb> Servus: what is so hard about perfect MT-32 emulation?
[19:38:54] <Servus> midi files are a standardized form of music that stores the music in notes only, thats all... the music is then rendered real-time by the user's computer... if you have a crappy soundcard, midi music sounds crappy, if you have a very high-end soundcard/system, then the music can sound like the london philharmonic did it
[19:39:09] <Zxcvb> Servus: other than timing issues that are an issue in any accurate emulator
[19:39:19] <Servus> so why go through extra trouble to down-grade the musical experience?
[19:39:58] <Zxcvb> Servus: ultima is designed for a MT-32, not the highend stuff
[19:40:10] <Zxcvb> Servus: even GM sucks for it
[19:40:36] <Servus> ive downloaded some of the remastered midis onto my comp and they sound very nice on my mid-to-high range soundcard
[20:36:25] <-- Servus has left IRC ()
[21:08:15] --> Zxcvb_ has joined #exult
[21:14:55] <-- Zxcvb has left IRC (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[21:49:09] <jer|w0rk> Hmm.
[21:52:52] <-- Zxcvb_ has left IRC (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[22:10:30] --- jer|w0rk is now known as jerbear|w0rk
[22:37:10] --> Zxcvb_ has joined #exult
[22:37:36] <Zxcvb_> why is the digital audio (ogg) so big?
[22:38:03] <Zxcvb_> doesn't the music in u7 usually loop?
[22:41:23] --- wjp|away is now known as wjp
[22:41:36] <wjp> there's quite a few tracks
[22:43:13] <Zxcvb_> I assume they are not compressed very much, if at all
[22:43:49] * wjp plays random track
[22:43:55] <wjp> looks like they're about 32kbps
[22:44:23] <Zxcvb_> is that like a 128kbps mp3?
[22:44:32] <wjp> no, lower qual.
[22:45:40] <wjp> the bitrate is 22050Hz
[22:46:02] <Zxcvb_> how close is it to a real MT-32
[22:46:08] <wjp> I have no idea
[22:46:32] <Zxcvb_> was the fmsynth (adlib emulator) removed in 1.1?
[22:47:01] <wjp> don't think so
[22:48:09] <Zxcvb_> i don't see an option for it in the setup
[22:49:22] <wjp> it might be only in the in-game audio options
[22:49:55] <wjp> the setup menu at the start is rather outdated :/
[22:50:20] <wjp> we should probably reduce it sometime to only have the options that could prevent you from starting a game
[22:51:03] <Zxcvb_> selecting a different scaler in the setup menu crashes exult
[22:51:34] <wjp> so it does
