[19:02:13] --> Dominus has joined #exult
[19:02:17] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Dominus
[19:02:43] <Dominus> hey ho
[19:02:47] <Dominus> wow, we sure do attract weird people
[19:05:41] <Fingolfin> we do?
[19:05:45] <Fingolfin> hi Dominus
[19:06:13] <Dominus> hi, see the logs of #exult and #pentagram about Cashman
[19:11:27] <-- Coren_ has left IRC (Remote closed the connection)
[20:20:07] <Dominus> authoring software for windows is really just plain stupid and allows almost none user interaction... At least the two programs I evaluated so far...
[20:20:25] <wjp> um, oh, hi Dominus :-)
[20:20:33] <Dominus> he he
[20:20:58] <wjp> authoring software?
[20:21:06] <Dominus> DVD authoring
[20:21:11] <Dominus> to make pretty menus
[20:21:12] <wjp> ah
[20:21:33] <wjp> sounds like something that would cost a lot of money, somehow
[20:22:07] <Dominus> the two I tried so far (from Ahead and Ulead) have great shortcomings so far...
[20:23:16] <wjp> can you use/play these menus on a PC, or just on a 'real' dvd player?
[20:23:48] <Dominus> both
[20:26:00] <Dominus> imagine this: Nero Vision Express (Ahead) numbers all chapters of a movie on the chapter pages, starting on each with 1not continously...
[20:26:16] <Dominus> and you can't turn it off if you want a description of the chapter...
[20:27:26] <wjp> hm
[20:27:28] <wjp> annoying
[20:27:52] <Dominus> now with Ulead DVD Movie Factory you can turn off the numbers but when you have only one movie on the DVD it doesn't give you a main menu from when you can proceed to the chapters menu...
[20:28:22] <wjp> so it drops you straight into the movie?
[20:28:43] <Dominus> with nero you can choose the colour/font used for the numbering, with Ulead you can't, even though you can choose it for everything else seperately
[20:29:03] <Dominus> aehhm, no it starts with a chapters menu
[20:29:10] <Dominus> no main menu...
[20:29:34] <wjp> (<-- total DVD newbie...) what would a main menu contain?
[20:31:36] <Dominus> the main menu normally contains (wehn you have a multi-episode DVD) an episode listing and if there are selectable options to get to further sub-menus containing extras or language options...
[20:32:36] <Dominus> oh yeah, and all those extras like selectable language or subtitles or any extras are not really considered with those programs
[20:32:50] <Dominus> guess I need to hunt for some "professional" program
[20:33:03] <Dominus> but that would probably cost way too much
[20:33:05] * wjp is just googling for linux tools for dvd authoring
[20:33:22] <wjp> not that much around, it would seem
[20:33:30] <wjp> there's a dvdauthor project at SF
[20:33:42] <wjp> which seems to be fairly active (at least its ML is)
[20:35:08] <Dominus> I guess eventually such a project will be much more usefull than those pricey damn windows programs
[20:35:33] <wjp> there's also something called dvdmenu which apparently uses dvdauthor
[20:37:53] <Dominus> I heard of that
[20:40:05] <wjp> it looks like the main problem is lack of any 'central' documentation
[20:40:24] <Dominus> ah, documentation hell
[20:40:41] <Dominus> like with so many linux stuff
[20:40:59] <Dominus> quite powerful but lacking the docs to make perfect use of it
[20:41:02] <wjp> it's not so bad with mainstream things
[20:41:17] <Dominus> (not that win32 stuff is much better once it is open-source)
[20:42:17] <Dominus> that's the nice thing with gui stuff, I click through until I get how it works.
[20:42:24] <wjp> I think "free" or "non-commercial" is a better criterion than "open-source"
[20:42:30] <Dominus> commandline is much more "reading" stuff :-)
[20:42:37] <Dominus> true
[20:43:29] <wjp> yes, with a commandline you really need something to tell you what you can do, and how to do it
[20:43:50] <wjp> a GUI (should) explain(s) itself
[20:44:09] <Dominus> yeah, should
[20:45:50] <wjp> heh, that dvdmenu produces some interesting commandlines :-)
[20:46:01] <wjp> (this is from the sample dvd .ini files supplied)
[20:46:06] <Dominus> can you paste?
[20:46:08] <wjp> dvdauthor -o /video/repackmpeg2/DVD_gen -p xste-palette.yuv -t -c 0,10:00,20:00,30:00,40:00,50:00,1:00:00,1:10:00,1:20:00,1:30:00,1:40:00,1:50:00,2:00:00,2:10:00,2:20:00,2:30:00,2:40:00,2:50:00 vobs/st.ent.1x01.BrokenBow_1_1.mpg -c 0,10:00,20:00,30:00,40:00,50:00,1:00:00,1:10:00,1:20:00,1:30:00,1:40:00,1:50:00,2:00:00,2:10:00,2:20:00,2:30:00,2:40:00,2:50:00 vobs/st.ent.1x02.BrokenBow_2_1.mpg -i post=vmgm1
[20:46:35] <wjp> hm, I wouldn't mind having that .mpg... I missed Broken Bow on TV
[20:46:37] <wjp> :-)
[20:47:39] <Dominus> that looks... interesting...
[20:48:08] <wjp> I'm guessing it's a chapter list
[20:48:16] <Dominus> yup
[20:48:26] <wjp> or two
[20:48:43] <Dominus> yes, two
[20:49:27] <wjp> not sure what the numbers mean exactly, though
[20:50:39] <Dominus> looks kind of strange, 3 sets of 10 minutes intervalls
[20:50:50] <wjp> yes
[20:51:25] <Dominus> or the mpgs are 2hours 500 minutes long...
[20:51:28] <wjp> it looks like it fills 3 hours
[20:52:03] <wjp> unless "st.ent.1x01.BrokenBow" doesn't mean the first ep of Star Trek Enterprise, Broken Bow, they should be about 45-50 minutes each :-)
[20:52:28] <Dominus> yep
[20:52:34] <Dominus> should mean that
[20:52:44] <Dominus> so it's 3 sets each
[20:53:23] <wjp> heh, gentoo actually has a dvdauthor package
[20:53:28] <Dominus> he
[20:53:52] <wjp> the numbers are just timestamps
[20:54:00] <wjp> so "1:10:00" really does mean 70 minutes
[20:54:24] <Dominus> strange with that broken bow example
[20:55:41] <wjp> I'm assuming it'll just cut off any out-of-bounds chapters
[20:56:01] <Dominus> ah, then it makes "sense"
[21:00:14] <wjp> another interesting line
[21:00:29] <wjp> dvdauthor -o /video/repackmpeg2/DVD_gen -m -b 64x137-305x175,audio0+vts1 -b 64x180-306x218,audio1+vts1 menu_audio_title4.mpg --entry=audio -p xste-palette.yuv -t -c 0,10:00,20:00,30:00,40:00,50:00,1:00:00,1:10:00,1:20:00,1:30:00,1:40:00,1:50:00,2:00:00,2:10:00,2:20:00,2:30:00,2:40:00,2:50:00 vobs/st.ent.1x00.ET-Tonite.mpg -i post=vmgm1
[21:01:23] <wjp> menu_audio_title4.mpg is created earlier from menu_audio_title4.jpg
[21:01:37] <wjp> multiplexed with a silence.mp2 audio file
[21:02:37] <wjp> I would guess this somehow creates an audio selection menu
[21:03:55] <Dominus> nope a menu with silence.mp2 as background music
[21:04:21] <wjp> that doesn't contradict my statement :-)
[21:04:39] <Dominus> not really
[21:04:42] <wjp> by 'audio selection menu' I mean a menu in which you can select an audio stream
[21:05:04] <Dominus> and I think it's just a menu with audio
[21:05:17] <Dominus> ph, wait
[21:05:29] <Dominus> let me first look at that commandline properly
[21:05:34] <wjp> note the two '-b' options
[21:06:12] <wjp> I think they indicate button rectangles
[21:06:20] <Dominus> yeah you are right
[21:06:33] <Dominus> or better, i suppose you are right :-)
[21:07:27] <wjp> and finally there's a command which I think generates a main menu
[21:07:54] <wjp> dvdauthor -o /video/repackmpeg2/DVD_gen -T -m -b 63x137-457x175,vts1 (5 more -b options) -b 63x395-430x433,vts7 menu.mpg -p xste-palette.yuv
[21:08:44] <wjp> this doesn't look too hard to use
[21:08:54] <wjp> just takes some experimenting :-)
[21:09:01] <Dominus> looka very interesting... I wonder if someone can make a gui around that... :-)
[21:09:24] <wjp> you have to make your own menu images (or mpegs), so it's quite flexible :-)
[21:09:35] <Dominus> but yes, you just need to be more prepared for it
[21:09:41] <wjp> ('flexible' can be such a nice word for 'feature-less' sometimes :-) )
[21:09:56] <Dominus> he he
[21:14:28] <wjp> should you be interested in using it, dvdauthor shouldn't be _too_ hard to port, although it does seem to use a few linux specific things
[21:14:46] <wjp> (for no apparent reason... *sigh*)
[21:16:03] <Dominus> I think I'll pass for now. gui is more preferred to me right now. like the chapter thing is quite nice to do in a gui and not look before (though that is not too hard as well)
[21:16:31] <Dominus> If I'm desperate, I'll try if it works with knoppix.
[21:17:31] <wjp> does it allow you to browse through the video and 'mark' chapters?
[21:18:07] <Dominus> yup
[21:18:38] <wjp> that sure beats manually writing down timestamps :-)
[21:18:44] <Dominus> it does
[21:18:58] <Dominus> and every ten minutes is too generic
[21:19:20] <wjp> the every-ten-minutes was just a sample, of course
[21:19:41] <Dominus> I know
[21:20:05] <wjp> hm, dvd burners are starting to get quite affordable
[21:20:15] <Dominus> they are
[21:20:29] <wjp> heh, now that I think about it, somebody at the math dept. just bought a laptop and it came with a dvd burner
[21:20:39] <wjp> (and he definitely did not need one)
[21:21:26] <Dominus> yeah, it's bundled now with all that other stuff you don't need
[21:21:34] <wjp> (nice laptop, btw... p4 2.8, 512Mb ram, 40Gb HD, geforce 4something... better than my desktop pc :-) )
[21:21:56] <Dominus> the power is greater than mine as well :-)
