[00:35:47] --> Copernica has joined #exult
[00:36:18] <Copernica> exult is not properly detecting my game data files, despite having the path specified properly in exult.cfg.
[00:36:47] <Copernica> i'm using linux
[00:37:52] <Copernica> i just copied the ultima7 folder off the UC cd and put its contents in /usr/local/share/games/blackgate
[00:38:01] <Copernica> i put that path in exult.cfg as the black gate data path
[00:38:07] <Copernica> but exult says it can't find the data files
[00:38:47] <Servus> do you have full permissions? :)
[00:39:25] <Copernica> everything is either 755 (dir) or 644 (file)
[00:40:33] <Servus> sorry i dont really know linux, and everyone else is asleep :(
[00:41:15] <Copernica> that's ok, it's not urgent.
[00:42:59] --> Kirben has joined #exult
[00:42:59] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Kirben
[00:43:53] <Servus> hello kirben
[00:50:01] <Copernica> you know what, i don't think exult is even looking at /etc/exult.cfg
[00:50:12] <Copernica> i wonder what happens if i make a copy in my home directory
[00:50:51] <Copernica> oh, no wonder
[00:51:06] <Copernica> there's a separate copy in my home directory, how did that get there...

[14:01:00] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[14:01:24] <Colourless> hi
[14:01:55] <Darke> Hi!
[14:18:59] <Colourless> the onion really can hit the spot sometimes http://www.theonion.com/onion3905/north_korea.html
[14:22:28] * Darke cackles. Yes, yes it does.
[14:27:36] <-- Fingolfin has left IRC ("bbl")
[15:48:21] --> wjp has joined #exult
[15:48:21] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to wjp
[15:48:25] <wjp> hi
[15:48:31] <Colourless> hi
[15:50:03] <Darke> Hi.
[16:20:59] <wjp> nice easter-egg on the forum :-)
[16:21:07] <wjp> first time I've seen that one
[16:23:46] * Darke blinkblinks and wonders how you'd accidentally discover that one.
[16:24:11] <wjp> well, if you're in the area at the right time, and just happen to double click on the mushroom...
[16:24:27] <wjp> the chance that _someone_ accidently finds it is quite high, I'd guess
[16:24:45] <Colourless> most strange
[16:24:47] <wjp> (the chance that any given person accidently finds it is quite small, OTOH :-) )
[16:25:36] <Darke> The chance that they told anyone else though, is also quite small. *grin* At least without the advent of this 'internet' thingie.
[16:25:48] <Colourless> now, everyone will know!
[16:27:12] <Darke> Even if they didn't want to! *grin*
[16:27:52] <Colourless> Knowledge is power, so they should want to know everything, regardless of how trivial it is!
[16:28:20] <wjp> :-)
[16:28:22] <Colourless> now, someone is still yet to find any true easter egg in U8 as far as I know. There must be one... somewhere....
[16:38:27] <wjp> hm, U8 eastereggs... no, can't think of any
[16:39:10] <Colourless> quotes screens as always, obviously don't count :-)
[16:58:42] <Darke> Really depends upon what you count as an Easter Egg I suppose. *ponder* The punny gravestones could be considered Easter Eggs.
[16:59:05] <wjp> nah, those were in all ultimas
[16:59:08] <Colourless> i wouldn't think so. just about every game with grave stones do that
[16:59:18] <wjp> and, indeed, many non-ultimas :-)
[16:59:50] * Darke (believe it or not) has only encountered them in one RPG before the ultimas, and he used to play quite a few of them. *grin*
[17:00:56] <Darke> And the fact the spanish u8 wasn't actually completable is also really not an Easter Egg too. *grin*
[17:04:32] <wjp> I think that would qualify as a blunder instead :-)
[17:04:42] <Colourless> hehe
[17:05:29] <wjp> I wonder how their QA department handled that... "Does the game start properly?" "Yes, it does" "Great, let's ship it!"? ;-)
[17:05:31] <Darke> *Just* a minor one, yes. *grin*
[17:05:40] * Darke snickers.
[17:06:57] <Darke> I imagine it was just a case of a minor fix-it near the end of the QA period breaking something, and no-one managed to play the game through far enough again before shipping, for it to be visible. *grin* Definately shoddy workmanship though.
[17:07:01] <Colourless> i don't even think there was a QA department that tested if the game worked
[17:07:21] <Colourless> the probably got 'some' build from EA, which obviously didn't work (or they broke it)
[17:07:36] <wjp> what exactly was the bug that prevented you from finishing it, btw?
[17:07:40] <Colourless> they then translated it, and the QA department just checked if all the text had been translated
[17:07:54] <Colourless> the bug was you could never get the key for devons chest to get the tear of the seas
[17:08:06] <Darke> Broke it more likely. Remember even the official EA builds of U7 have that one liquer bug, just a minor typo in the usecode and suddenly it won't work.
[17:08:10] * wjp nods
[17:08:46] <Colourless> the conversation usecode in U8 is a real mess
[17:09:07] <Colourless> if (response == "Some option")
[17:09:07] <Colourless> {
[17:09:09] <Colourless> }
[17:09:19] <Colourless> else if (response == "Some other option")
[17:09:20] <Colourless> {
[17:09:22] <Colourless> }
[17:09:25] <Colourless> else if ....
[17:09:26] <Colourless> and so on
[17:33:11] * Darke nods and ponders other u8 bugs. He can't really think of any, other then that area you can accidentally walk off the map.
[17:33:34] <Colourless> you've really got to try hard to do that though
[17:33:55] <Darke> Yes, it's definately a 'accidental-on-purpose' type think. *grin*
[17:41:10] <Darke> Hmm... actually, there is one other bug that we've found, though it's usecode related. *grin* How they push a global onto the stack, then only pop the information they want, leaving the remainder sitting there until the function returns.
[17:46:12] * Darke ponders writing a script to smash the stack, and then posting a report relating to it on bugtraq.
[17:46:26] * Darke ponders actually doing some *real* work on pentagram, rather then rambling.
[17:46:41] <Colourless> hehe
[17:51:33] <wjp> real work? wow :-)
[17:56:53] * Darke watches two people within 48 hours fail to grasp the meaning of 'undefined'. It's really quite surprising that people seem to think that even though the result is 'undefined' it should happen to work exactly like the way the other compilers they're familiar with work.
[17:57:19] <Darke> wjp: 'Real work' in the context of pentagram programming anyway. *grin*
[18:47:04] * Darke collapses into a small ball of sleeping bunny. Night!
