[20:22:38] --> Tanthalas has joined #exult
[20:23:01] <Tanthalas> is anyone here?
[20:23:13] * wjp looks around
[20:23:21] <Colourless> depends what for :-)
[20:23:38] <Tanthalas> I'm looking for a copy of SAPUCDEX, and the only result I found on Google was a log from here. I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me out?
[20:24:43] <wjp> I have no idea what SAPUCDEX is
[20:24:46] <Tanthalas> lol
[20:24:50] * Colourless neither
[20:25:05] <wjp> apparently Dominus and Kirben were talking about it 12 nov 2002
[20:25:19] <Tanthalas> i'm not entirely sure myself. i think it's along the lines of VDMSound - a DOS box sound emulator for old games on newer boxes.
[20:25:24] <Tanthalas> yeah, that's the log i found
[20:25:53] <wjp> do you know dosbox? (dosbox.sf.net)
[20:29:32] <Tanthalas> er...no
[20:30:42] <Tanthalas> looks good though
[20:31:20] <Tanthalas> reckon it'll run Syndicate Wars?
[20:31:21] <Tanthalas> ;)
[20:32:20] <Tanthalas> do you know if/when Dominus/Kirben will be around?
[20:32:35] <wjp> yes, it does run Syndicate Wars, but I doubt it'll run it at an acceptable speed
[20:32:55] <wjp> Kirben might be here in a few hours
[20:35:44] <Tanthalas> acceptable speed? do you mean too fast or too slow? i remember playing syndicate wars on Win98 once and it was zooming around, like dungeon keeper does on this machine
[20:36:06] <Tanthalas> i might stick around then, see if he appears
[20:40:15] <Tanthalas> thanks very much
[20:47:29] <wjp> it'll most likely be too slow
[20:48:17] <Tanthalas> hmmm
[20:48:51] <Tanthalas> bought a whole load of old games that i found myself missing, but half of em don't work. got the TR games to work, but stuff like Dark Omen is taking the mick
[20:49:36] <wjp> things from up to about 1992 should generally work fine in dosbox
[20:50:11] <Tanthalas> ah, DO's a bit later on than that. dunno when S-Wars was though
[20:50:15] <Colourless> pretty much if it uses a dos extender(i.e. dos4gw) it's going to run really slow
[20:50:30] <Tanthalas> hmmm. damn, they all do
[20:51:10] <Tanthalas> hey, i know. i've got an old 300mhz box stashed somewhere. i'll stick Win98 on it and use that. still wanna fix this bug in TR though
[20:51:32] <wjp> TR?
[20:51:45] <Tanthalas> tomg raider
[20:51:46] <Tanthalas> tomb
[20:52:20] <Tanthalas> someone said i need SAPUCDEX to fix the problems i get in cutscenes
[20:52:46] <Colourless> from it's name, i'm guessing it's got something to do with cd's
[20:52:54] --> Dominus has joined #exult
[20:52:58] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Dominus
[20:53:38] <Tanthalas> ah, hello Dominus!
[20:54:08] <Dominus> hi
[20:54:15] <Dominus> I saw you want sapucdex
[20:54:29] <Tanthalas> yes please, if you have it
[20:54:41] <Tanthalas> i would very much appreciate help in getting it
[20:55:08] <Dominus> http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071
[20:55:21] <Dominus> get the VDMS package or search that forum for it
[20:56:48] <Dominus> I soooo love broadband. Downloading new drivers (ATI Catalyst) is so fast
[20:56:52] <Tanthalas> hmmm, that's weird. I have VDMSound. Does SAPUCDEX come as part of that, or will i need the whole thing?
[20:56:58] <Tanthalas> broadband does rock, it must be said
[20:57:31] <Tanthalas> it rocks even more when you have a 2.4Ghz freq 100Mbps wireless LAN, and you can use it down the garden ;)
[20:57:34] <Dominus> If you have that latest beta you should have sapucdex
[20:57:47] <Tanthalas> ah, right. i see. i'll get the new version then
[20:58:01] <Dominus> but you can also search that forum
[20:58:10] <Dominus> it "originated" from there
[20:58:56] <Tanthalas> class. thanks very much, mate
[20:59:00] <Tanthalas> that's very helpful
[20:59:31] <Dominus> no problem
[21:01:26] <Tanthalas> bbiab. teatime. i'll let you know how it goes
[21:01:30] * Tanthalas starts munching
[21:05:43] * Dominus waves good bye and installs the new ati driver....
[21:05:49] <-- Dominus has left IRC ("a pooka invited me to Charlie's")
[21:33:09] --> Dominus has joined #exult
[21:33:14] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Dominus
[21:33:42] <Dominus> b
[21:35:46] <wjp> wb
[21:36:09] <Dominus> thx
[21:41:01] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("casts invisibility")
[21:51:00] <-- Tanthalas has left IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[22:27:12] --> coolball has joined #exult
[22:27:20] <coolball> hi
[22:27:35] <coolball> i get errors: starting forked player failed
[22:27:45] <coolball> then: broken pipe
[22:28:32] <coolball> its referring to my midi player i believe
[22:28:49] <Dominus> what are you using for playing midi?
[22:29:04] <Dominus> hi, btw :-)
[22:29:31] <coolball> um
[22:29:40] <Dominus> does this help? http://exult.sourceforge.net/docs.php#linux_alsa
[22:29:56] <coolball> it says: using cheapass forked midi player
[22:30:12] <coolball> its onboard creative sound blaster
[22:30:28] <coolball> redhat calls it a ensoniq
[22:30:40] <coolball> ill try that link ty
[22:33:00] <coolball> ok i think you solved it ty
[22:33:33] <Dominus> *cough*
[22:33:40] <wjp> hm?
[22:33:41] <Dominus> always look at the docs :-)
[22:35:10] <wjp> 'starting forked player failed' means that exult is trying to play midi using an external 'playmidi' binary, and it can't run it
[22:36:31] <wjp> (most likely because there is no 'playmidi')
[22:38:49] <wjp> possible solutions would be: get a 'playmidi', get timidity and compile exult with timidity support, get .ogg versions of the music and use those (only if you're using exult 1.1.something), disable music
[22:44:37] --> Tanthalas has joined #exult
[22:44:41] <Tanthalas> hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
[22:46:05] <Dominus> ?
[22:47:10] --> Fingolfin has joined #exult
[22:47:10] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Fingolfin
[22:47:42] <Dominus> hi Fingolfin
[22:54:12] <coolball> if i get the .ogg music do i have to edit .exult.cfg?
[22:55:38] <wjp> hm, no, probably not
[22:55:47] <wjp> why?
[22:57:48] <coolball> that seems like a good option
[22:58:28] <coolball> works without midi
[22:59:27] <wjp> you'll need a version of SDL_mixer with ogg support. (Most precompiled ones should have that.)
[23:03:32] <Tanthalas> Dominus? I installed VDMSound, tried running Tomb Raider, and it crashed on menu. uninstalled VDMS, reinstalled, and now it won't even get to the intro movie!
[23:03:58] <Dominus> did you follow the instructions?
[23:04:25] <Dominus> and did you reboot
[23:05:01] <Tanthalas> yes and yes
[23:05:07] <Tanthalas> as far as i can tell
[23:05:27] <Tanthalas> uninstalled old version, ran installer, made sure that SaPUCDEX was installed, rebooted
[23:05:36] <Tanthalas> right clicked > selected "Run with VDMS"
[23:05:39] <Tanthalas> crashed
[23:05:43] <Dominus> and did it work before?
[23:06:02] <Tanthalas> it worked with the old VDMS, but there was no sound in the cutscenes, which is why i was told to get SAPUCDEX
[23:06:40] <Tanthalas> apparently (according to that thread link you gave me) that option in the context menu is not supposed to be there...
[23:07:04] <Dominus> yep, probably means not everything got installed like it should be
[23:07:15] <Dominus> also for sapu, see the instructions for ir
[23:07:18] <Dominus> it
[23:07:34] <Dominus> AFAIK it doesn't work out of the box
[23:07:56] <Tanthalas> TR makes it as far as the menu, then dies
[23:08:00] <Tanthalas> which is annoying
[23:08:04] <Dominus> also that forum is a good place to ask for questions or even better search for topcs related to your game
[23:08:07] <Tanthalas> ok, i'll have another look at it
[23:08:55] <Tanthalas> uninstalled. need to reboot. brb]
[23:10:11] <-- Tanthalas has left IRC ()
[23:11:44] <wjp> time for me to go
[23:11:46] <wjp> bye
[23:11:51] <-- wjp has left IRC ("Zzzz...")
[23:11:52] <Dominus> bye
[23:12:34] <Dominus> hmm, me too
