[00:31:27] --> Zxcvb has joined #exult
[00:31:39] <Zxcvb> what is origin's position on exult?
[00:31:48] <wjp> none that we know of
[00:32:09] <wjp> we tried to contact them a few times in the past, but they never responded, AFAIK
[00:32:18] <Zxcvb> wondering if what happened to freecraft could happen to exult
[00:32:48] <Zxcvb> or do they really not care, as long as you don't distribute the data files?
[00:32:51] <wjp> the situation is different, luckily
[00:32:59] <Zxcvb> how?
[00:33:01] <wjp> I hope so :-)
[00:33:19] <wjp> we're not trying to do a full (stand-alone) clone of Ultima 7
[00:33:34] <Zxcvb> the super-dmca makes it illegal
[00:33:45] <Zxcvb> as no one has express permission to use ultima 7 data with exult
[00:33:49] <wjp> silly US laws
[00:33:53] <wjp> can't say I care much
[00:34:02] <Zxcvb> it's a state law in a few states
[00:34:06] <wjp> so?
[00:34:37] <Zxcvb> less chance of a forced extradition
[00:35:15] <Zxcvb> though your computer could be remotely destroyed if one US law goes through
[00:35:16] <wjp> what point are you trying to make?
[00:35:25] <wjp> that we should just pack up and drop exult?
[00:35:34] <wjp> just because the US is behaving stupidly?
[00:35:38] <Zxcvb> increase security on your computers
[00:35:59] <Zxcvb> unless you want your BIOS fried or video card overclocked and fried
[00:36:26] <Zxcvb> it's about all you can do
[00:36:26] <wjp> that's illegal under any sane laws
[00:36:40] <wjp> (and I'm not claiming US laws are by definition sane)
[00:36:44] <wjp> (the inverse, if anything)
[00:36:45] <Zxcvb> true, it would be illegal in your country
[00:37:44] <Zxcvb> but if the people who write these computer destroying viruses/worms never leave the US, all people outside the US can do is increase security
[00:38:28] <wjp> I never had any virus/worm trouble, and I intend to keep it that way
[00:39:52] <Zxcvb> most virus/worm writers don't have large teams to examine every inch of source code of oses like linux
[00:40:05] <Zxcvb> to find unknown holes to write viruses for
[00:40:43] <Zxcvb> with a team of several hundred and a budget of a few hundred thousand dollars, linux/BSD wouldn't be more secure than windows in most cases
[00:42:21] <wjp> So you're saying you consider this a serious possibility?
[00:43:05] <wjp> mind if I ask if you're doing anything (politically) against it?
[00:43:40] <Zxcvb> yes, i consider it serious
[00:43:52] <Zxcvb> as serious as the SSSCA/CBDTPA, which were only defeated because it was serious
[00:44:50] <Zxcvb> I have written my politicians with a paper letter, as well as even write a simple app called either win.com or kernel32.dll with a license that says anyone on my "shitlist" can't use it
[00:45:11] <Zxcvb> not much else than can be done (not enough money to bribe them)
[00:45:22] <wjp> heh, good :-)
[00:45:26] <wjp> more people should do so, I guess
[00:45:33] <wjp> (send letters, not bribe them ;-) )
[00:46:12] <Zxcvb> the idea of my win.com and kernel32.dll app is to be able to take advantage of the law if it should ever pass
[00:46:26] <Zxcvb> how would the RIAA/MPAA and memeber companies like their computers destroyed?
[00:48:01] <wjp> anyway, nearly 3 am; I should go
[00:48:11] <Zxcvb> what country are you in, btw
[00:48:16] <wjp> Netherlands
[00:48:19] <Zxcvb> I am in the US unfortunately

[12:07:21] <olivieryk> so when is the next exult release for?
[12:07:57] <wjp> hm, not sure, but it shouldn't differ much from the current 1.1 snapshots
[12:09:56] <olivieryk> cool then. you must have made several improvements since 1.0 no?
[12:10:01] <wjp> lots :-)
[12:10:04] <olivieryk> cause it's been a long time ago 1.0 was released
[12:10:07] <olivieryk> great!
[12:10:35] <olivieryk> i would be great to freeze and release 1.1 soon
