[16:53:51] * SB-X kicks Baastuul_.
[17:12:47] --- Baastuul_ is now known as Baastuul
[17:12:53] <Baastuul> Hi, SB-X.
[17:18:10] <SB-X> hi
[17:18:14] <SB-X> why do you keep getting disconnected?
[17:18:44] <SB-X> um... 23 hours ago
[17:18:47] <Baastuul> I don't know. Sometimes my new connection likes to go through what I call "The Doldrums". In other words, it gets really slow and gets really prone to timing out.
[17:19:09] <SB-X> oh
[17:19:13] <SB-X> but it's FAST!
[17:19:38] <SB-X> thanks for the mp3, I'm listening to it now
[17:19:52] <SB-X> part of it sounds like a song from Chrono Trigger
[17:19:58] <Baastuul> Which mp3 did I send you, again?
[17:20:10] <SB-X> Beyond_Good_and_Evil_Frame_of_Mind_OC_ReMix.mp3
[17:20:27] <Baastuul> Ahh, okay.
[17:20:33] <Baastuul> Yeah, I got that from OverClocked ReMixes.
[17:20:35] <SB-X> just forgot to say anything earlier :p
[17:20:39] <SB-X> oh
[17:20:57] <SB-X> is that from a game?
[17:21:07] <Baastuul> Yeah, OC ReMixes are all game music remixes.
[17:21:12] <Baastuul> http://www.ocremix.org/
[17:21:24] <Baastuul> There are, like, 2000 songs on there up for free download.
[17:21:47] <Baastuul> The vast majority of them are pretty crappy, but there are some "gems" within the pile!
[17:22:29] <SB-X> cool... anything Ultima?
[17:23:05] <Baastuul> Yup, there are a few, I believe.
[17:25:18] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/misc/2005-07-22_Antaspin_incomplete.jpg
[17:25:21] <Baastuul> This is a city I am working on!
[17:25:24] <Baastuul> I am drawing it on posterboard.
[17:25:44] <SB-X> eh?
[17:25:47] <SB-X> what will become of it?
[17:25:57] <Baastuul> It looks crooked because 1) I didn't use rulers to any great effect, and 2) I took a photo of it instead of scanning it in (mainly because it's not possible to fit an entire sheet of posterboard into my scanner).
[17:26:13] <Baastuul> It's for my conworld!
[17:27:08] <SB-X> are these people that review/write submissions for http://www.ocremix.org told to use as many musical adjectives as possible?
[17:28:10] <Baastuul> I don't know. Possibly. If the review is written by one "djpretzel", he's the webmaster of the site. He likes to use tons of musical terms that nobody understands. I normally don't read the reviews just because they're tedious to read.
[17:28:19] <SB-X> and metaphors and descriptions I don't get
[17:28:21] <SB-X> hehe
[17:28:22] <Baastuul> I don't think I've read more than five or six reviews in their entirety.
[17:28:22] <SB-X> oh ok
[17:28:37] <SB-X> was reading an Earthbound one :)
[17:28:40] <Baastuul> I just download the music and listen for myself. :p
[17:28:54] <Baastuul> I uploaded a song last night.
[17:29:08] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/sounds/mp3/Young_Holt_Unlimited_-_Soulful_Strut.mp3
[17:29:57] <SB-X> chiptunes!
[17:30:09] <SB-X> what is it?
[17:30:10] <Baastuul> Chiptunes?
[17:30:18] <SB-X> yes!
[17:30:22] <Baastuul> Explain.
[17:30:35] <Baastuul> I am unfamiliar with this term!
[17:30:43] <SB-X> you'll be able to get the chiptunes any time you see the chiptune logo on the site
[17:30:56] <SB-X> "The original chiptune/archive soundtrack for this game is available. Any time you see the chiptune icon original soundtrack (see emulation > sound files for players) on the site, you can directly access these files."
[17:31:55] <Baastuul> Ah, okay. I've tried getting some archived soundtracks, but I could never really get them to play correctly. I wish they would just encode them as MIDIs or something.
[17:32:10] <Baastuul> Instead they have to use .nsf and you have to download a separate media player that doesn't really work to get them to play!
[17:32:48] <SB-X> I have a player for SNES spc music.
[17:33:12] <SB-X> what's the song you uploaded
[17:33:26] <Baastuul> A catchy instrumental from the days of yore!
[17:34:02] <SB-X> is it for your conworld?
[17:34:24] <Baastuul> Nope. I just like the song. :p
[17:36:24] <SB-X> what's your conworld?
[17:37:18] <SB-X> man... the battle music was the worst track in earthbound to begin with
[17:38:50] <SB-X> the remix is better
[17:40:08] <Baastuul> What are you asking by "what's your conworld?" Are you asking for the name of it? What the point of it is? What IS a conworld...?
[17:40:32] <SB-X> yes
[17:41:24] <Baastuul> I was asking for clarification, but I'm guessing you're saying "yes" so that I answer all of my clarifying questions. :p
[17:41:40] <SB-X> please
[17:41:41] <Baastuul> Anyway, a conworld is a "constructed world"; basically a made-up world in which there are distinct cultures, religions, languages, you name it.
[17:42:03] <Baastuul> The name of my world, as termed by one of my cultures, is Ordulgan (from various words in their language, which I won't get into).
[17:42:15] <Baastuul> I'm mainly doing this just for fun, and as a creative outlet of sorts.
[17:42:27] <SB-X> i've done that
[17:42:31] <Baastuul> I've written and drawn out 98 pages worth of stuff in my notebook that explains a lot of stuff.
[17:42:32] <SB-X> that's cool
[17:42:41] <SB-X> wow, ok I didn't do that
[17:42:50] <SB-X> didn't know there was a name for it... conworld
[17:42:57] <SB-X> name for such a creation
[17:43:34] <Baastuul> I didn't know there was a term for it until two days after I started working on it. :p
[17:43:52] <SB-X> most of what I did involved making a big overhead map
[17:43:54] <Baastuul> This was what my old alphabet looked like: http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-06-29_Revised_syntax.jpg
[17:44:06] <Baastuul> Well, the old alphabet of the language I've been working on creating.
[17:44:15] <Baastuul> (There's also a term for that, and it's called 'conlanging')
[17:44:28] <SB-X> i've made world and region maps, and then higher-scale city pictures
[17:44:28] <Baastuul> This is my new alphabet:
[17:44:30] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-01_New_syntax_and_new_alphabet.jpg
[17:44:35] <Baastuul> cool
[17:44:49] <SB-X> i just used regular paper and taped them together and put them on the wall
[17:44:52] <Baastuul> Here are my latest maps:
[17:44:53] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-09_Balenulda.jpg
[17:44:57] <SB-X> oen was a big port city and you could see the ships
[17:44:58] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-09_Balenulda_Colored.jpg
[17:45:04] <Baastuul> haha awesome
[17:45:08] * SB-X looks at the pictures.
[17:45:27] <Baastuul> Those maps are of when the continents were jumbled together as a supercontinent
[17:45:50] <SB-X> I already saw the new alphabet!
[17:46:14] <SB-X> but assumed you just went crazy or were channeling a dead scribe
[17:46:26] <Baastuul> haha
[17:46:41] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-12_The_Flora_of_Ordulgan.jpg
[17:46:57] <SB-X> yeah! the regional maps look nice with terrain features
[17:47:03] <SB-X> like the maps in the tolkien books
[17:47:12] <Baastuul> yar!
[17:47:36] <Baastuul> I actually printed out copies of that map (one colored, the other grayscaled), and then I put them in iced tea last night.
[17:47:48] <Baastuul> I mean, I laid out a cookie pan and dumped iced tea in there with the copies of the map in there.
[17:47:48] <SB-X> ok the plants are weird looking... do they walk around?
[17:47:54] <Baastuul> Some do, I think. :)
[17:48:01] <SB-X> hmm, not my imagination then
[17:48:11] <Baastuul> And so last night I let them soak in the iced tea, and just not too long ago (while we were talking, actually), I set them out to dry in the sun.
[17:48:17] <SB-X> huh?
[17:48:23] <SB-X> does that make them yellow
[17:48:27] <Baastuul> I'm hoping it'll give it that nice yellowed, brown look.
[17:48:28] <SB-X> and parchment-like
[17:48:28] <Baastuul> Yeah. :)
[17:48:32] <SB-X> oh
[17:48:43] <SB-X> a friend of mine did that with a map once
[17:49:03] <SB-X> or something similiar... the map had nice edges
[17:49:10] <SB-X> that looked torn or osmething
[17:49:11] <SB-X> something*
[17:49:25] <SB-X> parchmented
[17:49:52] <SB-X> you going to be able to go there with a moongate?
[17:50:22] <Baastuul> Nah
[17:50:42] <Baastuul> It's a fantasy world, I suppose, but I want to make it Earth-like in its ways.
[17:50:55] <Baastuul> So there aren't going to be Elves and Dwarves and spellcasters and whatnot.
[17:51:05] <SB-X> can still have moongates
[17:51:16] <SB-X> so the avatar can save it
[17:51:19] <Baastuul> haha
[17:51:41] <SB-X> have to say, the uncolored map looks better
[17:51:52] <Baastuul> Really? Most people have told me the colored map looks better.
[17:52:10] <Baastuul> But I'm pretty lousy with colored pencils. :)
[17:52:13] <SB-X> it's easier to see but some of the details are not as fine
[17:52:24] <SB-X> its prettier i guess
[17:52:34] <SB-X> but the uncolored one is more authentic almost
[17:52:51] <Baastuul> yeah
[17:53:19] <SB-X> the shape is like Arcanum
[17:55:34] <SB-X> well not really
[17:55:41] <SB-X> havn't played that game in a while
[17:55:58] <SB-X> http://arcanum.sierra.com/us/images/map.jpg
[17:56:48] <Baastuul> k!
[17:57:03] <Baastuul> Their map kind of looks like a butt!
[17:57:53] <SB-X> kind of bumpy then :p
[18:08:19] <Baastuul> I have failed in my tea-parchment things!
[18:08:25] <Baastuul> The borders have all but faded. :(
[18:08:32] <Baastuul> I left them in the pan too long, I think.
[18:08:51] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-22_Failed_map_parchments.jpg
[18:08:56] <SB-X> ugh
[18:09:20] <SB-X> someone will pay for this
[18:09:38] <Baastuul> Actually, I wonder if I'd be able to stick one of those into my printer and print directly over it! :o
[18:09:53] <SB-X> print what?
[18:09:59] <Baastuul> A map.
[18:10:11] <Baastuul> The one on the left is too damaged, though. >:/
[18:11:23] <SB-X> you can say this is one of the first maps of Balenulda that was recently uncovered, but hasn't been restored
[18:11:36] <SB-X> it's too damaged to be
[18:11:37] <Baastuul> haha
[18:11:39] <Baastuul> Or something :p
[18:11:49] <SB-X> yeah
[18:11:53] <SB-X> or something like that
[18:12:57] <SB-X> whats over the ocean?
[18:13:30] <Baastuul> Well, that supercontinent is supposed to encompass much of the world.
[18:13:35] <SB-X> oh
[18:13:48] <Baastuul> I'm going to need to draw a better map sometime.
[18:16:27] <SB-X> can they travel the ocean?
[18:16:47] <Baastuul> Yeah
[18:16:51] <Baastuul> There are still islands and whatnot
[18:17:10] <Baastuul> When the supercontinent tore apart, ship travel became necessary to reach the other continents and broken-apart landmasses!
[18:17:15] <SB-X> so they aren't primitive island people, they have ships
[18:17:22] <Baastuul> Depends on where you go.
[18:17:30] <SB-X> you didn't say it tore apart
[18:17:56] <Baastuul> Well, I just didn't mention that to you yet
[18:18:01] <Baastuul> But that's basically in the overall history of my world
[18:18:22] <Baastuul> Basically, an asteroid hit the northern section of the world, triggering massive earthquakes that tore apart the supercontinent.
[18:19:14] <SB-X> did the asteroid come from an exploding planet?
[18:19:39] <Baastuul> I haven't specified where it came from yet!
[18:19:41] <Baastuul> And that's part of the mystery!
[18:19:50] <SB-X> were there dinosaurs?
[18:19:58] <Baastuul> That is also part of the mystery!
[18:20:12] <Baastuul> Basically, the people of Balenulda worshiped a pantheon of serpent-like gods.
[18:20:30] <Baastuul> People are unsure if these "serpent-like gods" were "gods" or if they were dinosaurs or if they were perhaps a superior alien race!
[18:20:32] <SB-X> the serpents of order and chaos?
[18:20:47] <Baastuul> The Ophidians!
[18:20:50] <Baastuul> No, not really. :)
[18:20:58] <Baastuul> They're not like the Ophidians, but more gigantic.
[18:21:05] <Baastuul> I mention how the remains of a gigantic serpent were found in one of the temples
[18:21:06] <SB-X> it's probably aliens from sirius
[18:21:09] <Baastuul> haha
[18:21:31] <Baastuul> But anyway, the religion of these peoples required massive ritualized sacrifices.
[18:21:44] <Baastuul> Eventually, an age of enlightenment came about, and people started fighting and a war broke out.
[18:21:59] <Baastuul> When they were fighting, that was when the asteroid destroyed their way of life for many centuries!
[18:22:16] <SB-X> they let the asteroid win!
[18:22:22] <Fl00der> arcanum is one of the best RPG ever made
[18:22:38] <Baastuul> NO OTHER!!
[18:22:39] <Fl00der> :P
[18:22:39] <SB-X> hi Fl00der
[18:22:40] * Baastuul gets angry!!
[18:22:42] <Baastuul> haha
[18:22:42] <Fl00der> hi guys
[18:22:45] <Baastuul> Hail, Finlander!
[18:22:51] <SB-X> yeah it is graet though... with I'd finish it
[18:22:55] <SB-X> great*
[18:22:56] <SB-X> wish*
[18:23:28] * Baastuul listens to the extended version of the Rescue Rangers theme song!
[18:23:35] <Baastuul> C-C-C-C-Chip and Dale!
[18:23:39] <SB-X> haha
[18:23:48] <Fl00der> lol
[18:24:20] <SB-X> it wasn't good enough they had to extend it
[18:24:49] <Baastuul> I am uploading it!
[18:24:53] <Baastuul> It is amazingly catchy. :p
[18:25:12] <SB-X> what about duck tales theme song? :p
[18:25:23] <Baastuul> I have that too!
[18:25:32] <SB-X> they sound similiar to me
[18:25:37] <Fl00der> duck tales is better than chip and dale
[18:25:45] <SB-X> yeah
[18:25:55] <SB-X> it has a cyborg duck with propellers
[18:25:58] <Baastuul> I'll upload the Duck Tales theme song after Rescue Rangers.
[18:26:40] <SB-X> So did you scan the other documents about it yet?
[18:26:44] <SB-X> about the conworld
[18:26:50] <Baastuul> Not really
[18:27:02] <SB-X> :\
[18:27:02] <Baastuul> Basically just pages upon pages of scribbled notes and ramblings :p
[18:27:20] <Baastuul> I should make an mpg of me flipping through the notebook! :O
[18:27:28] <Baastuul> That'll save me the hassle of scanning a bunch of documents :p
[18:27:32] <SB-X> I can't read that fast
[18:27:35] <Baastuul> haha
[18:27:52] <SB-X> i mean, if your flipping it really fast
[18:28:22] <SB-X> you should make a game
[18:28:34] <SB-X> then I can familiarize myself with the land through experience
[18:28:35] <Baastuul> NEVAR
[18:28:43] <SB-X> somehow I knew you'd say that :p
[18:28:51] <Baastuul> ^_________^
[18:29:14] * Baastuul listens to that Lovefool song by the Cardigans.
[18:30:04] <Fl00der> *mums*
[18:30:12] * Fl00der is eating strawberries
[18:30:28] <Baastuul> FINNISH STRAWBERRIES~!
[18:30:33] <Baastuul> I bet they are mutated.
[18:30:36] <Baastuul> And they fins on them.
[18:30:39] <Fl00der> :D
[18:30:42] <Baastuul> Because that's how the Finns like their food. With fins.
[18:30:47] <Fl00der> no these are from my own yard :)
[18:30:59] <Fl00der> fresh
[18:30:59] <Baastuul> You have proven that they are Finnish, then!
[18:31:18] <Fl00der> yea. these are finnish strawberries
[18:31:41] <Baastuul> haha
[18:31:55] <Baastuul> Fresh Finnish strawberries with fins on them, just the way Finns like their fresh Finnish strawberries!
[18:32:13] <Baastuul> Finned Finnish strawberries...
[18:32:18] <Fl00der> there are no fins in these :D
[18:32:27] * Baastuul becomes scarlet red with anger.
[18:32:32] <Baastuul> There are fins on them, damn you!
[18:32:34] <Baastuul> FINS!
[18:32:37] <Baastuul> Okay, I'll shut up now. ;)
[18:32:39] <Fl00der> :)
[18:32:57] <Fl00der> are you drunk? or something ?
[18:33:05] <Baastuul> No :)
[18:33:13] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/sounds/mp3/Chip_n_Dale's_Rescue_Rangers_(Extended).mp3
[18:33:17] <SB-X> drunk with power
[18:33:24] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/sounds/mp3/Duck_Tales_Theme.mp3
[18:33:44] <SB-X> it's not extended
[18:33:55] <Baastuul> I don't have the extended Duck Tales song. :(
[18:34:03] <SB-X> at least your server is fast
[18:34:13] <Baastuul> How fast were you downloading at?
[18:34:19] <SB-X> 160K/s
[18:34:21] <Baastuul> :o
[18:34:22] <Baastuul> k
[18:36:31] <SB-X> this is a little different
[18:36:49] <Baastuul> I am uploading the Tale Spin extended one!
[18:36:53] <SB-X> lol
[18:37:10] <SB-X> that was the best one
[18:37:24] <SB-X> well not the theme song but the show
[18:37:33] <SB-X> i still want an airship
[18:37:33] <Baastuul> Yeah
[18:37:41] <Baastuul> I wish they released Tale Spin DVDs :P
[18:37:45] <SB-X> hehe
[18:38:36] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/sounds/mp3/Tale_Spin_(Extended).mp3
[18:41:34] <SB-X> what else is on there
[18:42:04] <SB-X> the duck tales one sounds like it was recorded from tv
[18:42:29] <Baastuul> Yeah, it most likely was.
[18:43:27] <Baastuul> LYD_-_Aliens_2.mp3
[18:43:36] <Baastuul> (just replace the filename in the URL)
[18:43:58] <Baastuul> little_red_monkey.mp3
[18:44:02] <Baastuul> Kyu_Sakamoto_-_Sukiyaki.mp3
[18:44:06] <Baastuul> Gorillaz_-_Feel_Good_Inc.mp3
[18:44:12] <Baastuul> Bugotak_-_Highway_Star.mp3
[18:44:22] <Baastuul> There are some other ones
[18:44:28] <Baastuul> But those are the only ones I feel like pasting at the moment :p
[18:45:56] <SB-X> oh ok
[18:45:59] <SB-X> i didn't mean everything anyway
[18:46:12] <SB-X> would rather see the conworld documents!
[18:46:26] <Baastuul> I've actually been thinking of making a website for all of my conworld stuff.
[18:46:39] <Baastuul> :O
[18:46:40] <Baastuul> http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e9/Wellington_City_Night.jpg
[18:47:23] <Baastuul> It is 4404.66 KB!
[18:47:30] <Fl00der> nice picture
[18:49:09] <SB-X> what is it
[18:49:14] <Baastuul> Wellington at night.
[18:49:37] <Fl00der> where is Wellington?
[18:49:45] <Baastuul> New Zealand!
[18:49:58] <Fl00der> mmkay
[18:50:10] <Fl00der> I thought it is in USA :P
[18:50:17] <Baastuul> hehehe
[18:52:14] <Baastuul> http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Geocachernemesis:Gallery
[18:52:18] <Baastuul> This guy takes awesome panorama shots. :o
[18:52:50] <Fl00der> indeed
[18:53:22] --> luteijn has joined #exult
[18:53:38] <Baastuul> Hi, luteijn. :)
[18:54:03] <luteijn> Hi, was just reading in the logs about your fake parcement try.
[18:54:14] <Baastuul> haha
[18:54:56] <luteijn> I did something like that about 12 years ago for an adnd campaign. But I think we used coffee, as it's darker.
[18:55:15] <luteijn> then singed the edges with a lighter.
[18:55:20] <Baastuul> cool
[18:55:26] <Baastuul> Here's how mine ended up looking: http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-07-22_Failed_map_parchments.jpg
[18:55:43] <Baastuul> I just used tea last night because it was the closest thing available. :)
[18:55:47] <Baastuul> I didn't feel like brewing coffee!
[18:55:56] <SB-X> hi luteijn
[18:56:02] <luteijn> You can probably buy paper that already looks like parchement in a hobby shop these days.
[18:56:04] <SB-X> lighter... yeah that's how my friend did it
[18:56:05] <Fl00der> Baastul: what are those papers?
[18:56:07] <luteijn> hi SB-X.
[18:56:20] <Baastuul> Fl00der, I tried making some old-looking maps for my constructed world.
[18:56:24] <Fl00der> ah
[18:56:26] <Fl00der> I see
[18:56:38] <Baastuul> Luteijn, yeah, it's not as fun if you buy the papers, though. :)
[18:56:43] <Baastuul> Much more fun to make them yourself.
[18:57:01] <Fl00der> oh well I'm off to TV, see ya ->
[18:57:12] <luteijn> I think we printed first, then soaked; if you're going to hand draw, better first soak, so you don't destroy the art. (printed is easy to recreate, and hard to print on wobbly paper)
[18:57:12] <Baastuul> Bai!
[18:57:31] <Baastuul> Yeah, I printed out the pictures, then soaked them. The problem was that I soaked them for too long. :/
[18:58:18] <Baastuul> I'll attempt to do this a little bit later today, probably. I need to take some photos of flowers sometime soon and catalog them.
[18:58:22] <Baastuul> (For a totally unrelated thing.)
[18:59:22] <luteijn> if you have a straigth paperpath-printer you could try to print on the treated papers. put the ink-cartridge in cardstock mode (a little raised)
[18:59:32] <SB-X> Fl00der: cya
[18:59:50] <Baastuul> Cool, I'll keep that in mind. Though I think it'll probably not look as good if I print on to the parchment itself.
[19:00:03] <luteijn> or try ironing the papers. That might also singe them. Potato juice turns brown when heated, you could try that + hot iron.
[19:00:11] <Baastuul> Hmm!
[19:00:18] <Baastuul> When you did this 12 years ago, how long did you soak the papers in the coffee?
[19:00:22] <luteijn> (also usable for 'secret ink')
[19:01:04] <luteijn> I can't remember, I think we were not very patient so probably not very long. if you spill coffee, and then clean it up right away, paper is already ruined so probably a few minutes should be enough
[19:01:14] <Baastuul> k
[19:01:26] <luteijn> iced tea might not be so staining..
[19:05:48] <SB-X> Heat map! http://vortex.plymouth.edu/usheat.gif
[19:07:03] <SB-X> Baastuul: it's cool where you live
[19:07:46] <luteijn> hmm, was looking at that picture just after poking around baastuul's site where it said something crazy about him having an 'analinfeksjon', and now you come up with 'anal-ysis'... what's wrong with you guys ;)
[19:08:00] <Baastuul> hahaha
[19:08:15] <Baastuul> I've been meaning to change that ;)
[19:09:14] <luteijn> I guess its just there for comic value?
[19:09:19] <Baastuul> yeah
[19:09:29] <Baastuul> I figure not that many Norwegians will be visiting my site :p
[19:09:50] <Baastuul> Then again, I doubt you need to be Norwegian to catch "analinfeksjon" :p
[19:09:50] <SB-X> luteijn: don't blame me... you inserted the '-'! :)
[19:10:06] <SB-X> he did say arcanum looks like a butt
[19:10:44] <luteijn> I'm not norwegian, but it's easy enough to get the meaning of norse languages for me..
[19:14:37] <luteijn> Hmm too bad it's not possible to click on the picture of the language books on Baastuul's site to open them; I wonder why I still tried..
[19:15:41] <Baastuul> The language books?
[19:15:56] <Baastuul> You mean those .jpgs I have of the scanned pages from my notebook? :)
[19:16:03] <luteijn> http://www.dannyatherton.com/photos/photos/misc/2005-07-06_Bookshelves_4.jpg
[19:17:32] <luteijn> Was wondering what "The Joy of Getting Along With The CHINESE" was about, and tried to click it. Also just now tried to cut and paste the title from the image. Anotehr disappointment as it didn't work of course.
[19:18:21] <SB-X> make Baastuul get the book and read excerpts here
[19:18:42] <Baastuul> Ahhh
[19:18:46] <Baastuul> Hmmm
[19:18:59] <Baastuul> I think it's basically just a guidebook to how to survive with Chinese people or something
[19:19:07] <Baastuul> These are a bunch of books my dad owned when he was in the Vietnam War.
[19:19:21] <luteijn> Hmm looks like the green books (on japanese) are missing a volume.
[19:19:23] <Baastuul> The English books are just miscellaneous crap we own
[19:19:43] <Baastuul> Can you read Japanese, luteijn?
[19:20:02] <SB-X> It's not Schneiter, Fred . The Joy of Getting Along With the Chinese: For Fun and Profit. Torrence, CA: Heian International, 1992. ?
[19:20:26] <luteijn> could be it says Fred Schneiter on the spine
[19:20:43] <Baastuul> Also says "Heian" on it too
[19:20:45] <Baastuul> Probably is :)
[19:20:52] <SB-X> maybe it's another edition, i found that on Google :)
[19:21:26] <luteijn> Nihongo wa: I can read it a little, probably forgot a lot of the grammar, focusing more on Zhongwen at the moment :)
[19:22:24] <Baastuul> What is Zhongwen?
[19:22:49] <Baastuul> Is it a Chinese dialect?
[19:23:43] <luteijn> zhong is the [|] character (middle) and wen is culture/language
[19:24:05] <Baastuul> ah ok
[19:24:47] <luteijn> all the characters on those green books are kanji/hanzi anyway.
[19:25:34] <Baastuul> I'm just glad I'm done in that hellhole. :p
[19:25:36] <Baastuul> For the time being anyway
[19:25:47] <Baastuul> It's so nasty and cluttered in there.
[19:26:41] <luteijn> That's what a shed is all about; full of moldy stuff that at one time was to good to throw away but to crap to keep in your house ;)
[19:26:54] <Baastuul> hehe yeah
[19:27:11] <servus> It's also for keeping your hoe of destruction safe.
[19:27:34] <luteijn> A kind of purgatory for stuff. after a few years you get to throw it out anyway. Or scavenge parts from it ;)
[19:27:44] <Baastuul> My dad is a pack rat
[19:27:52] <Baastuul> He likes to collect junk and think he can sell it all
[19:28:08] <-- trand has left IRC ("솔로천국 커플지옥")
[19:28:27] <luteijn> He just knows that if you throw something away, the next day you'll need it.
[19:29:04] <Baastuul> Haha, maybe so, but if you knew the full extent of our shed... You'd start thinking otherwise. ;)
[19:30:12] <SB-X> do you even have a hoe of destruction?
[19:30:29] <Baastuul> No, but we have some broken hoes. And there are skanky hoes around, harhar.
[19:30:36] <luteijn> I don't even have a normal hoe. I do have a rake and a spade :)
[19:30:45] <Baastuul> Hmmm!
[19:30:51] <Baastuul> Most of our tools are broken. :P
[19:30:58] <Baastuul> We do a lot of gardening and stuff, too.
[19:32:26] <luteijn> hmm the other pictures of the shed look remarkably like my shed. Although it doesn't seem to be leaky..
[19:32:40] <Baastuul> Hehe, that's because we don't have water hooked up to our shed yet. :)
[19:34:01] <luteijn> Neither have I, but it does have a roof..
[19:34:14] <luteijn> well 99.5 percent of a roof ;)
[19:34:57] <Baastuul> hehe
[19:36:37] <luteijn> wonders about the strangely shaped glass jars in http://www.dannyatherton.com/photos/photos/misc/2005-07-03_Bookshelves_8.jpg
[19:36:55] <Baastuul> I don't even know WHY my dad keeps those.
[19:37:48] <luteijn> look like some kind of lanterns to me. But if they're airthight, wouldn't work very well.
[19:38:47] <SB-X> marmalade
[19:40:20] <luteijn> would the marmalade be cooked directly in the jar (so needs big bottom to put on a stove)? this bell-shape doesn't really make for efficient storage.
[19:40:57] <SB-X> it doesnt? i don't know how to cook marmalade
[19:41:21] <Baastuul> Weird, I didn't realize that I neglected to upload the thunderstorm pictures. :p
[19:42:32] <servus> My mum boiled the jars full of jam, then you put the lid on quickly while the air is still hot and expanded, and as it cools down, the lid gets "sucked onto" the jar.
[19:42:56] <servus> Because the expanded air under the lid cools down and contracts.
[19:43:48] <luteijn> that also works with regular jars, if you put in the hot jam straight from the pan. and they stack properly. Works best if the watervapor has forced all the air out, then you close the lid.
[19:44:19] <Baastuul> My mom makes jam out of our strawberries that we grow
[19:44:26] <Baastuul> Doesn't taste too bad
[19:44:29] <Baastuul> But it's a bit runny
[19:45:03] <luteijn> but I guess she doesn't use those jars, as they look dusty and disused. Hmm homemade jam..
[19:45:29] <Baastuul> No, of course not. I'd be disgusted if she used those jars. ;)
[19:45:42] <Baastuul> She uses some old jam jars that we have, and she cooks the jam in a big pot.
[19:45:57] <Baastuul> I think the pot that she cooks beef stew in is the same pot that she cooks the jam in. :p
[19:46:18] <Baastuul> Anyway, I'm going to watch some Deep Space Nine. Talk to you later. :)
[19:46:23] <SB-X> bye
[19:46:26] <luteijn> beefjam.. later.
[19:48:40] <SB-X> hey luteijn, dollar was down for a few hours or more the other day
[19:48:47] <SB-X> did you upgrade the power supply?
[19:48:51] <luteijn> yes.
[19:49:10] <luteijn> and the case. it's cooler and less noisy now.
[19:49:43] <SB-X> wow that's great, very quiet or just sufficiently less noisy? :)
[19:50:25] <luteijn> of course every thign took longer than the 30 mins I thought it would. It's quite quiet, but still has a kind of pulsating noise which I suspect is coming from the CPU fan.
[19:51:24] <SB-X> a kind of pulsating noise doesn't sound so bad
[19:51:35] <SB-X> how long did it take?
[19:52:24] <luteijn> hard to tune out something that goes on for 1 second then stops for .5 second and then on again.
[19:52:36] <SB-X> oh
[19:53:24] <SB-X> at least it's predictable
[19:54:09] <SB-X> should be easier to get used to than something random
[19:54:17] <luteijn> took a few hours, because stnadard case doesn't mean everything fits. And I had to take apart an old AT-powersuply to scavenge the fan, then clean that put it in, find out the connector of the new power supply was 24 poles instead of 20, so had to find a cutting implement that was strong enough to cut the connector, but subtle enough not to make a big mess..
[19:56:15] <luteijn> I'm hoping to find out what is causing the pulsating noise, and then to fix that too. Then I can move the whole thing back in its normal place.
[19:56:28] <SB-X> normal place? out of the closet?
[19:57:57] <luteijn> It's supposed to be in the ceiling of a corridor, but now it's upstairs in a guest/storage room.
[20:00:35] <SB-X> "in the ceiling of a corridor"?
[20:00:44] <SB-X> you have a compartment?
[20:00:44] <servus> Like a gun turret from Half-Life.
[20:01:15] <SB-X> Did those come out of the ceiling automatically?
[20:01:25] <luteijn> the ceiling goes like this: (side view) --___
[20:01:42] <servus> A soffet.
[20:02:17] <servus> Soffit*
[20:02:22] <luteijn> Made a little shelf to extend the lower part into the area that is higher, and put all the telecom equipment there
[20:04:25] <SB-X> oh... conveniently out of the way then
[20:06:38] <luteijn> convenient, except for the noise level of the new computer. I might take some time tomorrow or monday to move it back in its slot.
[20:14:00] <luteijn> there's a floorplan and some pictures here http://luteijn.xs4all.nl/~luteijn/ the computer shelf is just out of shot in 'gang achter.jpg'

[20:15:53] <SB-X> ?
[20:15:54] <SB-X> hi
[20:16:06] <wjp> luteijn: nice looking house
[20:16:11] <luteijn> that's a floorplan.

[20:16:18] <wjp> hi Ayin
[20:16:24] <SB-X> yeah
[20:16:26] <SB-X> ah k
[20:16:26] <luteijn> wjp: it's for sale... 2515 AM
[20:16:46] <wjp> hm, might be quite close; I'm 2341 :-)
[20:16:51] <Ayin> I don't know whether there is an exult developer there, but I'd like to thank them because Exult is great :)
[20:17:05] <wjp> Ayin: thanks :-)
[20:18:10] * SB-X jots that down to look up in Google Earth.
[20:18:30] <luteijn> there's multiple diagrams in the vsd, I guess the one that opens by default isn't the most interesting one :) the one labeled 'overview' is, I guess.
[20:27:31] <Ayin> About the pikeman bug in Monitor, I've found no resource, on the net (including in the exult faq), that offers no other solution than "reload an earlier save". However, this is quite easy to do with Exult Studio. However, this is quite easy to fix using Exult Studio. Shouldn't this be mentioned in the faq?
[20:28:21] <Ayin> (mhhh, why am I doubling my sentences? :p)
[20:29:08] <wjp> can only (easily) use Exult Studio if you're using an Exult 1.4.x snapshot, though, and I'm not sure we want to recommend that at this point
[20:30:45] <wjp> hm, I wonder if marzojr has considered fixing the usecode bug that lets that egg be deleted in his SI usecode patches
[20:31:07] <Ayin> Mhhh. Good point :) Although 1.4.x runs pretty fine here.
[20:31:28] <wjp> it's a bit unstable, though; lots of new bugs being introduced (and fixed again, of course :-) ) recently
[20:33:04] <wjp> ah, the pikemen usecode bug is indeed fixed in Marzo's SI usecode patch

[20:46:13] <SB-X> Where is wjp?
[20:47:20] <luteijn> According to the postcode slightly west of Leiden, but he didn't give the full code, so not too sure. Maybe he's in the phone book :)
[20:48:27] <luteijn> going to drive home, so bye for now.
[20:48:31] <SB-X> cya

[21:03:25] <wjp> yes, slightly northwest of Leiden
[21:04:19] <wjp> copying data from a disk without DMA is painfully slow
[21:04:37] <wjp> I get near-instant crashes when trying to write to it if DMA is enabled
[21:05:16] <wjp> replacing it with a bigger HD, but need to copy the data first... *yawn* :-)
[21:06:26] <wjp> going to RAID1 my two 120Gb HD's while I'm at it (and put LVM2 on top of said RAID1 as well); I hope I won't regret this tomorrow ;-)
[21:07:39] <servus> What's the point of LVM/
[21:07:52] <servus> ? Seems to me to be yet another pointless meddling of things that already work by Redhat.
[21:08:17] <wjp> allows easier growing of partitions
[21:08:38] <servus> And are you sure your hard disk really does not support DMA? Have you tried an hdparm -d1 /dev/h##?
[21:08:53] <wjp> of course; but then writing to it causes crashes :-)
[21:09:13] <wjp> the other disk on the same IDE controller is using DMA just fine
[21:09:17] <servus> Neato. When I tried Linux on an NForce2 chipset, all drives defaulted to having DMA turned off.
[21:10:11] <wjp> (the 'of course' was an answer to 'have you tried', by the way)
[21:10:20] <servus> I figured that.
[21:10:22] <wjp> the HD should support DMA, and has in the past
[21:10:38] <servus> Have you looked into both BIOS and jumper settings?
[21:10:58] <wjp> I hope it's the cable or the HD that's causing the trouble and not the IDE controller
[21:13:25] <servus> Wow, that is some suerb Engrish, Baastuul.
[21:13:43] <servus> superb*. Have you tried a PCI IDE controller, wjp?
