[01:39:51] <wjp> time for me to go
[01:39:53] <wjp> g'night
[01:39:58] <-- wjp has left IRC ("Zzzz...")
[01:48:56] <-- Fingolfin has left IRC ("42")
[06:39:50] --- Darke|zzZ is now known as Darke
[06:53:09] --> waz has joined #exult
[06:53:50] <waz> hey, anyone know >where< on the tree of life you have to attack with the pick?
[06:53:52] <waz> :
[06:53:53] <waz> )
[06:56:14] <waz> exultbot: walkthru
[06:56:34] <Darke> Sorry, not a clue.
[06:57:12] <waz> 'k
[06:57:27] <waz> thank you anyway.
[06:57:31] <-- waz has left IRC (Client Quit)
[07:22:57] --- Darke is now known as Darke|afk
[08:53:56] --- Darke|afk is now known as Darke
[09:34:34] --> slacked has joined #exult
[10:21:43] <-- slacked has left IRC (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[10:41:42] --> wjp has joined #exult
[10:41:42] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to wjp
[10:41:45] <wjp> hi
[10:44:28] <Darke> Hi.
[10:45:42] <Darke> How's things going with gentoo?
[10:45:56] <wjp> it's behaving quite well, actually :-)
[10:46:15] <wjp> although somehow font services don't seem to like me...
[10:46:24] <wjp> I had trouble both with xfs and Xft
[10:46:29] <wjp> but now everything seems to be ok
[10:47:08] <wjp> I've emerged X,Gnome,XChat and Galeon by now, and working on evolution
[10:47:55] <Darke> Curious. Can't say I've had any problems with X. IIRC the only real problem I've had with gentoo has been with apache and with gcc3.x when they were transitioning over.
[10:48:08] <wjp> XChat pulled in half of Gnome 1.4, somehow
[10:48:30] <wjp> maybe I should've picked a 1.9.x version of xchat
[10:48:34] <Darke> That's how I... acquired most of my gnome install. *grin*
[10:48:54] <wjp> so now I've got all of gnome2 and large portions of gnome1.4 installed.. *sigh* :-)
[10:49:32] * Darke laughs.
[10:49:46] <Darke> Ah well, at least you know what not to do next time. *grin*
[10:49:53] <wjp> I wonder if I should've disabled KDE support in that 'USES' variable
[10:50:07] <wjp> something pulled in quite a lot of KDE too
[10:50:20] <wjp> (and unlike Gnome, I did _not_ want that :-) )
[10:50:33] <Darke> Probably. The 'problem' with that is that if you do want to install a program that uses kde, suddenly you can't install it 'til you disable it.
[10:50:53] * Darke tried it with 'gnome', didn't seem to work properly. *grin*
[10:50:54] <wjp> yeah, that's why I just left it enabled
[10:51:13] <wjp> I already prefetched all of KDE anyway
[10:55:17] <wjp> time for breakfast; I'll bbl :-)
[10:58:04] * Darke snickers.
[11:11:45] <wjp> did you read Dominik's comment about No Regret last night, btw?
[11:12:53] <wjp> (specifically, the german version of NG uses eusecode.flx)
[11:12:53] <Darke> About the .de No Regret having an 'eusecode' file?
[11:12:59] <wjp> yup ;-)
[11:14:47] <Darke> And the rest of that 'denning' excerpt is: "^^Head can only be destroyed by securing DetPacs to his ears." *grin*
[11:15:04] <wjp> eh? :-)
[11:15:15] <wjp> weird :-)
[11:16:07] <Darke> It's part of the DATALINK class. *grin*
[11:16:18] <Darke> Mission briefs and such.
[11:16:30] <Darke> Umm... a 'JELYHACK' class? *blinkie*
[11:21:35] <wjp> heh :-)
[11:23:00] <Darke> It exists only as an 'empty' ::use() function that's never called. *grin* At least never called from usecode anyway.
[11:25:48] * wjp hmms... several of the things that annoyed me about RH8's sawfish seem to be gone here
[11:34:22] * Darke shrugs. Wasn't RH was doing several odd things with window managers and such in RH8? Who knows.
[11:34:42] <wjp> yes, they were
[11:37:41] * wjp looks at latest ML mail. Gah! *curses automake*
[11:38:42] <wjp> yay! evolution done :-)
[11:42:07] * Darke snickers.
[11:47:46] * wjp takes a peek at gentoo's automake/autoconf version-selection wrapper
[11:47:51] <wjp> kind of nice
[11:48:11] * wjp adds WANT_AUTOMAKE_1_6, WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5 to his .bashrc :-)
[11:48:53] <Darke> Gee... guess what I have in my .bashrc? *grin*
[11:49:20] <Darke> You 'might' also want to grab the bash-completion package and add that line to your .bashrc too. Makes auto completion rather more convenient. *grin*
[11:49:42] <wjp> yeah, I know that one :-)
[11:52:30] <wjp> well, so far I must say I like gentoo
[11:52:44] <wjp> now if only it decides not to crash as often as RH8 I'll be really happy :-)
[11:57:26] * Darke laughs!
[12:00:13] --> Colourless has joined #Exult
[12:00:13] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[12:00:37] <Colourless> hi
[12:00:38] <wjp> hi
[12:03:59] <wjp> hm, I'm not compiling anything right now...
[12:04:05] * wjp looks around for stuff to emerge
[12:05:03] <wjp> time for some servers, I guess. (postgresql, apache)
[12:06:47] <wjp> oh, I've been meaning to ask: what's a 'masked' package exactly?
[12:07:01] <wjp> (and how do I install a masked package like apache 2?)
[12:07:14] * wjp couldn't find that in the gentoo online docs, strangely
[12:22:43] * Colourless kicks darke to see if he will wake up and pay attention
[12:23:16] * Darke yelps!
[12:23:35] * Colourless points to wjp's questions
[12:24:10] <Darke> A masked package is one that's been 'marked' as being unstable or uncompilable, but is in the system so the developers can work on it.
[12:29:19] <Darke> You can 'forcibly' do something like `emerge -u /usr/portage/net-www/apache/apache-2.0.43.ebuild` to install it. But I can't for the life of me remember how to 'unmask' a package. *grin* I've only done it once for gcc3.x, and that was ages ago.
[12:31:28] <Darke> Found it. Comment the >=net-www/apache-2.0.0 line in here: /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask to allow apache2 to be emerged.
[12:34:36] --> tent has joined #exult
[12:36:01] <wjp> hi
[12:36:18] <Colourless> hi
[12:36:44] <wjp> Darke: ah, I see. thx
[12:36:52] <Darke> Hi.
[12:37:03] <Darke> wjp: No problem.
[12:37:16] <tent> hello.
[12:42:03] <-- tent has left IRC ("Boot.. u4")
[12:42:51] <Darke> For those feeling bored, of curious: http://www.dwheeler.com/secure-programs/ "Secure Programming for Linux and Unix HOWTO" *grin*
[12:44:00] <Darke> Oooh, look! There's a 'JELLYHACK2' too! Or rather `JELYH2` anyway. *grin*
[12:45:14] * Darke snickers. They're also in No Remorse too. Amusing.
[12:48:07] <wjp> ok, exult 'make install's properly with automake 1.6 in gentoo too
[12:48:22] <wjp> that's enough evidence for me that it Should Work(tm)
[12:48:51] <Darke> Colourless: BTW, your 'disassembled' code's malformed, 'push dword bp' is two bytes long not one. *grin*
[12:49:36] <wjp> lol
[12:50:18] <wjp> isn't spawn 8 bytes too?
[12:50:37] <wjp> hm, or 7?
[12:50:44] <wjp> it's been too long since I looked at this :-)
[12:50:54] <Darke> 7 I think. Can't remember, haven't looked at spawn in a while. *grin*
[12:53:55] * wjp wonders what to do about tetex
[12:55:59] * Darke earperks.
[12:56:56] <wjp> tetex 1.0.7 is, well, kind of ancient :-)
[12:59:00] <Darke> Copy the old version's .ebuild to the version number of the newer one, then update the source url inside it, and see if it emerges? *grin* Can't hurt and I've done that with success on a couple of packages.
[12:59:27] <Darke> Colourless is correct in using a spawn opcode to call a ::use though. So we can't fault him at that. *grin*
[13:00:18] <Darke> Hmm... looks like the later versions have been maked because of 'too many problems'.
[13:00:32] <wjp> yes :-)
[13:01:07] <Darke> Maybe email the person who did it asking them if they've manage to 'fix' the problems? *grin*
[13:01:08] <Colourless> Darke: bah i though it got all the offsets correct
[13:01:18] <wjp> I built my own .rpm of the latest beta (from last week), and it seemed to work ok, though
[13:01:28] <Colourless> spawn is 7 bytes
[13:01:38] <Darke> Or just removing the mask and trying to build it yourself to see what happens? *grin*
[13:02:42] * wjp hmms... weird
[13:02:54] <wjp> ant doesn't emerge properly because $JDK_HOME isn't set
[13:03:33] <Darke> Have you emerged one (or more) of the jdk's and followed the instructions to set it as the default jdk?
[13:03:57] <wjp> blackdown-jdk was emerged, yes
[13:04:10] <wjp> I don't think I followed any instructions, though
[13:04:44] * wjp goes look for them :-)
[13:06:26] <Darke> Does `java-config --jdk-home` give you any output that looks like: /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1
[13:06:40] <wjp> hm, it seems it's defaulting to blackdown JRE, while ant needs the JDK
[13:08:20] <Darke> Something like this should 'fix' the problem: `java-config --set-system-vm=blackdown-jdk-1.3.1`
[13:08:27] <wjp> yeah, that's what I just did
[13:08:40] <Darke> Cool. *grin*
[13:08:53] <wjp> now java-config --jdk-home works ok
[13:08:59] <wjp> but $JDK_HOME still isn't set :/
[13:11:38] * Darke suggests setting it manually just to see if it 'works'.
[13:11:43] <wjp> it does :-)
[13:11:53] <Darke> Always nice to know. *grin*
[13:12:12] <wjp> I need to figure out the /etc/env.d/ system I guess
[13:12:38] * wjp notices an env.d howto in the gentoo docs
[13:12:49] * Darke snickers.
[13:13:13] <wjp> ah! I just needed to run env-update
[13:13:38] <Darke> This bunny needs to go to bed, his occasional contract work requires him up early tommorrow morning to wander in and, y'know, work. *grin* Night!
[13:13:45] <wjp> :-)
[13:13:46] <wjp> g'night
[13:13:59] <Darke> Cool. I'd forgotten that. Maybe I'm more asleep then I realised? *grin*
