[08:04:08] <-- ShadwChsr has left IRC ()
[09:57:39] --> Nadir has joined #exult
[09:57:39] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Nadir
[09:57:43] <Nadir> hi
[09:58:28] <Darke> Hi.
[10:15:03] <Nadir> looks like rain
[10:19:20] * Darke blinkblinks. It does?
[10:21:00] <Nadir> just making idle conversation :)
[10:21:22] * Darke thinks it looks more like him just barely resisting to rant on the sorry state most linux document preperation systems. About the only usable one is LyX, and it's one of the niche ones no-one uses. *grin*
[10:22:50] <Nadir> LyX is merely a frontend to LaTeX
[10:23:26] <Nadir> I guess a wordprocessor is not what you need
[10:25:25] <Darke> More or less. But the important thing is in LyX, I can: 1) click on a button to add a table and 2) it doesn't render improperly. Abiword can't seem to handle tables, and KWord can't render them correctly.
[10:26:28] <Darke> Quanta would be good if you could actually modify the document in the 'gui' mode as well as in the actual page source.
[10:28:12] <Darke> I think the primary flaw of LyX is that a good 90% of the standard commands aren't in menus, so you need to continually reference, (the admittedly nicely formatted!) documentation included with it, to find out the commands to do basic things like "How do I make text bold?". *grin*
[10:30:35] <Nadir> abiword: you need the 1.2 branch
[10:30:41] <Nadir> openoffice.org ?
[10:30:42] <Darke> I was compiling openoffice to try it out except that I ran out of space on the compile partition, which normally has a good 600+MB free. I get the strangest feeling that OpenOffice is _just_ a little bloated. *grin*
[10:30:55] <Nadir> get it precompiled
[10:31:40] <Darke> Probably won't work. I'm using a gcc3.2 system, likely OO will come precompiled against the v2 ABI.
[10:31:45] <Nadir> ?
[10:32:04] <Darke> Unless they statically linked everything. *ponder*
[10:32:05] <Nadir> and gentoo does't come with the old libraries just to run these apps
[10:32:37] <Darke> Not if you don't compile gcc2.95.2, which I specifically didn't. This entire system is gcc2.* free. *grin*
[10:32:57] <Nadir> libstdc++.so.3 => /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.3 (0x40143000)
[10:32:58] <Nadir> libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x401d4000)
[10:32:58] <Nadir> libgcc_s.so.1 => /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 (0x402ef000)
[10:32:58] <Nadir> /lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
[10:33:26] <Nadir> that is CRAP
[10:33:38] <Nadir> you don't need the whole of gcc, you just need the libs
[10:34:06] * Darke shrugs. Why have them if you don't need them? *grin* I compile everything anyway.
[10:35:04] --> Suvroc has joined #exult
[10:35:06] <Suvroc> hi
[10:35:10] <Darke> Hi!
[10:35:31] <Suvroc> hi Darke
[10:38:19] <Nadir> Darke: but compiling everything is not always a great idea.
[10:38:55] <Nadir> source packages are always larger than binary, disk space requirements are high, cpu usage is high, time wasted is lots
[10:39:57] <Nadir> and for very little gain
[10:42:41] <Darke> Strangely enough, I've seen a very high gain. I've found precompiled packages to be significantly slower then what I can get compiling my own. KDE in specific is much, much faster compiled then precompiled.
[10:43:28] <Darke> My machine is idle 16 hours a day, and for 8 hours of that the only thing I might be doing is sshing into it from work and using `vi`, so I've got nothing to waste really. *grin*
[10:43:51] <-- Kirben has left IRC ("System Meltdown")
[10:46:20] <Darke> The download for the source is twice as large as the binary in the case of OO, and it certainly takes up a non-trivial amount of disk space. But disk space is cheap nowdays, I just forgot to allocate the appropriate amount before compiling it. *grin*
