[10:27:40] <wjp> hi
[10:28:13] <wjp> I was thinking... can we use cronjobs on shell2.sf.net?
[10:28:27] <wjp> if so, maybe we should automatically backup the phorum db
[10:31:48] <wjp> I have to go; bye

[13:41:20] <-- fingolfin has left IRC (gotta run to university again)
[13:53:17] <Nadir> hi
[13:53:32] <Colourless> 'bout time ;-)
[13:53:52] <Nadir> Sorry. I was busy. I would like to answer wjp's question, but he hasn't come back...
[13:54:02] <Nadir> SF doesn't allow cronjobs
[13:57:40] <Nadir> gotta go now
[13:57:43] <Nadir> bye
[13:57:44] <-- Nadir has left IRC (Pleasant dreams, Avatar... hehehehehe)
[14:56:05] --> exultbot has joined #exult
[15:00:53] <-- Colourless has left IRC (Exultbot, I'm going to have to tell wjp about what you did :-))

[16:49:32] --> wjp has joined #exult
[16:49:37] <wjp> hi
[16:51:01] <-- matto has left IRC (farmer.openprojects.net sagan.openprojects.net)
[16:51:38] --> matto has joined #exult
[16:51:54] --> Dominus has joined #exult
[16:52:23] <Dominus> hi
[16:52:56] <Dominus> hmm, how can I read my password for the forum? Or can one of you do this?
[16:53:12] <Dominus> All the obvious ones I normally use arenīt right
[16:53:31] <fingolfin> hi Dominus
[16:53:45] <fingolfin> Dominus: I think I maybe can reset your password? never tried that, though... hm :)
[16:54:19] <wjp> you mean for an account from before The Accident(tm) ?
[16:54:34] <Dominus> oh, please try, maybe just delete my Dominus one
[16:54:36] <Dominus> yep
[16:54:39] <wjp> those are all gone
[16:54:53] <wjp> just create a new account
[16:55:23] <Dominus> ah, okay
[16:55:47] <wjp> hmm... <B>bold</B> doesn't work, but <b>bold</b> does
[16:55:48] <Dominus> funny as my cookie was still valid even though the account was not there anymore :-)
[16:55:50] <wjp> silly phorum
[16:56:06] <fingolfin> <b> is required for XHTML anyway :)
[16:56:23] <wjp> same with the cookie used for keeping track of which posts you read
[16:57:50] <Dominus> so theoretically someone could have created the same account with the same nick and post as me while I could have still posted with my nick
[16:57:52] <wjp> btw, having an account doesn't 'reserve' your nick or anything. Others can easily use the same nick, since we don't force using accounts
[16:58:00] <Dominus> :-)
[16:58:04] <Dominus> just as I asked
[16:58:49] <wjp> I post as 'wjp' from at least 3 different locations, and I'm only logged in with my account on one of them
[17:00:16] <wjp> oh, btw, Dominus, did you have the forum password before the reset?
[17:00:29] <wjp> I kind of assumed you did while sending that email :-)
[17:00:34] <Dominus> nope, I didnīt
[17:00:37] <Dominus> hehe
[17:00:45] <wjp> enjoy, in that case :-)
[17:00:58] <Dominus> phew, I wonīt touch that forum
[17:01:56] <wjp> the "easy admin" function works well enough. It's just that it doesn't properly handle unexpected errors
[17:02:21] <wjp> (such as deleted config files...)
[17:21:22] <wjp> gtg
[17:21:22] <wjp> bye
[17:21:24] <-- wjp has left IRC ([x]chat)
[17:29:33] * Dominus has to go as well - testing some even newer Drivers for Voodoo5 (http://www.aesoftware.com/) - have fun trying those out Colourless, if you dare
[17:29:40] <-- Dominus has left #exult
[17:38:31] --> wjp has joined #exult
[17:40:22] * wjp is going to take down exultbot's machine for a while
[17:52:56] --> exultbot has joined #exult
[17:53:31] <Dominus> bah, I hope Colourless doesnīt try those drivers out
[17:53:59] <Dominus> they are just using other peopleīs work and only hacked their name into the dlls
[17:54:04] <Dominus> such suckers
[17:54:25] <Dominus> I hate people like that
[17:55:03] <Dominus> anyway, trying sth different now, probably going to lock my pc up in a second :-)
[17:55:28] <wjp> have fun :-)
[17:56:14] <wjp> btw, exultbot now has a 100Mbit link to the internet :-)
[17:56:29] <-- Dominus has left IRC (Read error to Dominus[212186137085.15.univie.teleweb.at]: Connection reset by peer)
[18:17:50] <-- wjp has left IRC ([x]chat)
[19:13:42] --> wjp has joined #exult
[19:28:11] --> TonyHoyt has joined #Exult
[19:28:13] <TonyHoyt> Hello.
[19:28:26] <wjp> hi
[19:28:42] <TonyHoyt> Hey wjp, I got a question for ya.
[19:29:05] <TonyHoyt> Why do you continue to work on the Exult project after all this time. It's been a long time since it's started, hasn't it?
[19:29:31] <wjp> yeah
[19:29:45] <wjp> I guess I've been working on it for ~1.5 - 2 years now
[19:29:48] <wjp> still fun :-)
[19:30:01] <TonyHoyt> You wouldn't believe the argument I've been in over this and like projects with friends.
[19:30:11] <TonyHoyt> Wouldn't it be more productive though to just make your own game?
[19:30:57] <wjp> what do you mean?
[19:32:00] <TonyHoyt> Well your spending so much time optimizeing, bug fixing what you think usecode instructions mean and in general devoteing a good deal of time trying to get exult working for an old game few people have the data files too. Why not just start up your own new project from scratch.
[19:32:25] <wjp> well, because :-)
[19:32:35] <TonyHoyt> Because?
[19:33:08] <wjp> exult is (currently) mostly about getting the u7's to run on modern machines
[19:33:44] * wjp tries to think of a way to explain
[19:33:45] <TonyHoyt> So you have no interest in makeing your own game? Just have a working copy of ultima 7 on multiple platforms?
[19:34:18] <wjp> I personally don't really feel like making my own game, no
[19:34:45] <wjp> other team members might
[19:34:58] <TonyHoyt> So for you it's just to recreate ultima 7 in a sence?
[19:35:25] <wjp> that, and to gain programming experience
[19:36:05] <TonyHoyt> I would say "So why not do X" but I assume you would counter argue "Ya but I can then just do this, and this is fun for me." Correct?
[19:36:40] <wjp> yeah, but nothing stops me from doing "X" as well :-)
[19:38:31] <TonyHoyt> But for the time being, you want to make Exult.
[19:39:15] <wjp> as long as it stays fun to do, and I have the time for it, yes
[19:39:38] <TonyHoyt> How much time do you think you spend on working on Exult.
[19:39:44] <wjp> it varies a lot
[19:40:47] <wjp> I have spent full days on exult, but right now it's more like 4 hours/week, I think. (college and other projects are taking up a lot of time)
[19:41:26] <TonyHoyt> *nod* Cool cool.
[19:44:38] <TonyHoyt> I respect your time invested. Some others don't citeing that such efforts should be put into makeing new things.
[19:44:50] <TonyHoyt> ?help
[19:44:53] <TonyHoyt> ?log
[19:44:53] <exultbot> Logs are available at http://www.math.leidenuniv.nl/~wpalenst/exultlog.php3
[19:45:20] <wjp> others have very little say over what I spend my time on
[19:46:02] <wjp> if they feel we should spend our time on other things, that's their problem really
[19:46:32] <TonyHoyt> Ah well. It's just an opinion.
[19:47:01] <TonyHoyt> What is your role in the project exactly, wjp? What have you done for the project? I know you've been involved in it for some time but other then that....
[19:47:41] <wjp> I'm afraid I can't say what it is 'exactly'
[19:47:58] <TonyHoyt> Well what bits have you done?
[19:49:09] <wjp> I've been doing lots of things, from doing the original windows port and then the BeOS port, to usecode, gumps, cheats, etc...
[19:49:26] <wjp> mostly fixing (minor) usecode-related bugs, currently
[19:49:56] <TonyHoyt> Okay. So little bits here and there, nothing has been allocated to be 'your section' then.
[19:49:59] <wjp> oh, and some paperdoll art :-)
[19:50:35] <wjp> no, not really
[19:51:14] <TonyHoyt> Ya, I love that Black Gate Paperdoll system. Although there are still quite a few wholes to fill hmm?
[19:51:48] <wjp> yeah, but those are beyond my (very poor) artistic skills
[19:52:06] <TonyHoyt> *nods*
[19:52:20] <wjp> I did somehow end up integrating all new art into exult :-)
[19:52:26] <TonyHoyt> I"m no artist as well.
[19:52:50] <TonyHoyt> That's cool. IF people do want to make thier own games, they will want to include thier own art.
[19:53:23] <wjp> yeah, that's one of the reason I wrote the photoshop plugin for .shp files
[19:53:27] <wjp> s/reason/reasons/
[19:53:50] <TonyHoyt> more and more art. Although today Ultima 7 does look a bit oogly.
[19:54:02] <wjp> it looks good enough
[19:54:08] <wjp> (IMHO)
[19:54:34] <TonyHoyt> Wasn't there some look into makeing Exult also a multiplayer engine?
[19:54:40] <wjp> no
[19:54:42] <wjp> :-)
[19:55:04] <wjp> it's been suggested a lot, though
[19:55:50] <wjp> if someone wants to use the exult engine to base a multiplayer game on, they can, but we're not going to do it
[19:56:12] <TonyHoyt> There was the BlackRock project.
[19:57:07] <TonyHoyt> But that was in Delphi and basicly abandoned. Also dog slow.
[19:57:14] <wjp> yeah, I haven't heard anyhthing about that in ages
[19:57:35] <wjp> delphi isn't bad. I kind of like it :-)
[19:57:55] <wjp> it's even become semi-portable with kylix recently :-)
[20:00:18] <TonyHoyt> afk... work.
[20:00:22] <wjp> k
[20:09:05] <TonyHoyt> btw, HOw's magic comeing along? What in general is not working?
[20:11:01] <TonyHoyt> ?help
[20:11:03] <TonyHoyt> ?version
[20:11:03] <exultbot> The latest official version of Exult is: 0.94alpha5
[20:15:03] <TonyHoyt> Oookay. Lost wjp.
[20:27:51] --> fingolfin has joined #exult
[20:28:14] <fingolfin> hi
[20:29:16] <wjp> hi
[20:29:18] <wjp> sorry, was away
[20:29:43] <wjp> not sure about magic
[20:29:55] <fingolfin> ho hum waht?!
[20:30:14] * wjp was replying to Tony's last question
[20:31:22] <fingolfin> ah ok :)
[20:33:27] <wjp> I upgraded exultbot's machine earlier tonight, btw
[20:33:39] <wjp> it now has a 100Mbit link to the internet ;-)
[20:33:56] <TonyHoyt> Hey Fingolfin.
[20:34:12] <TonyHoyt> Hey Fingolfin, What do you do for the exult project? I'm curious.
[20:34:25] <TonyHoyt> Ya, what is up with magic? Usecode issues or just plain old not implemented?
[20:34:30] * fingolfin whispers to who: "do I actually have any use?"
[20:34:47] <wjp> not-yet-implemented usecode, mostly :-)
[20:35:24] <wjp> fingolfin: no, you don't ;-)
[20:36:15] <fingolfin> wjp: oh but I can break CVS very well!
[20:36:23] <wjp> oh, right... forgot about that :-)
[20:36:27] <fingolfin> slate.msn.com
[20:36:36] <fingolfin> M$ needs to hire some folks who know about HTML
[20:36:47] <fingolfin> e.g. how to start a HTML page...
[20:36:51] <wjp> what's that line at the top of the page? :-)
[20:36:57] <fingolfin> besides, MSN seems to be blocking Mozilla now :)
[20:37:03] <fingolfin> wjp: check out the HTML source :)
[20:37:17] <wjp> oh my

[20:40:35] <fingolfin> =)
[20:40:37] <TonyHoyt> I love that feature.
[20:40:40] <fingolfin> it is on /., btw
[20:40:52] <TonyHoyt> Not htat I find it usefull. But it is a cool feature.
[20:41:44] <wjp> wow, 742 comments on that /. thread already?
[20:42:02] <wjp> (the ones around it only have 136 and 69)
