[02:56:13] <Baastuul> Hi, sbx.
[02:56:23] <Baastuul> I just got done playing Rome: Total War's demo.
[02:56:23] <Baastuul> It is much love.
[02:59:14] <-- Baastuul has left IRC ("http://baastuul.digital-focus.us/")
[03:00:45] --> Baastuul has joined #Exult
[03:46:03] <-- servus has left IRC ("Leaving")
[03:54:41] --> servus has joined #exult
[03:59:21] <sbx> hi
[03:59:28] <servus> Meow?
[04:00:10] <sbx> Baastuul: neaver heard of it
[05:06:57] --> Zxcvb has joined #exult
[05:07:35] <Baastuul> Sbx, you've never heard of Rome: Total War? :o
[05:07:41] <Baastuul> http://www.totalwar.com/
[05:09:20] <Zxcvb> what kind of game is it?
[05:10:01] <Baastuul> They're strategy games where you control hundreds to thousands of troops on the battlefield.
[05:10:22] <Zxcvb> how do you control that many?
[05:10:24] <Baastuul> Shogun: Total War and Medieval: Total War were two other titles made by the same company.
[05:10:36] <Zxcvb> or does one unit represent X troops
[05:10:58] <Baastuul> You don't control them individually. They're broken down into battallions and the such and you command those individually.
[05:11:07] <Baastuul> So basically you're controlling five to ten units at the same time.
[05:11:28] <Zxcvb> similar to destiny of an emperor
[05:11:37] <Baastuul> Never played it :/
[05:11:46] <Zxcvb> only instead of your unit having hit points, it has number of soldiers
[05:12:09] <Zxcvb> that game is similar to many RPGs
[05:12:20] <Baastuul> What game?
[05:12:23] <Zxcvb> only you have generals, and instead of the general having hit points, he has troops
[05:12:23] <Baastuul> Rome: Total War?
[05:12:32] <Zxcvb> no, destiny of an emperor is like that
[05:12:40] <Baastuul> Ahh ok
[05:12:47] <Baastuul> Well
[05:12:54] <Baastuul> The goal of the Total War games is to conquer provinces and the such
[05:13:04] <Baastuul> and you do that by a bunch of micromanagement
[05:13:14] <Baastuul> playing by looking down at a giant map of a particular section of the world
[05:13:28] <Zxcvb> but if you have 50,000 troops and command 5-10 at a time, one round could take weeks to set up
[05:13:50] <Baastuul> then when you have to go conquer enemy provinces and whatnot, you can choose to command the attacks personally
[05:13:58] <Baastuul> there can only be 10,000 troops on the screen at once
[05:14:02] <Zxcvb> i.e. each round would mean giving 10,000 seperate orders, and assuming each order takes 5 mouse clicks
[05:14:04] <Baastuul> and it's really not as complicated as you're thinking it is :)
[05:14:25] <Zxcvb> 10,000 individual troops?
[05:14:30] <Baastuul> no
[05:14:40] <Baastuul> you're thinking too much in terms of Warcraft and the such
[05:14:56] <Baastuul> you have individual troops, yes, but they all belong to a certain battallion
[05:14:59] <Baastuul> you select the battallion
[05:15:01] <Baastuul> and send them marching
[05:15:06] <Baastuul> one click commands all of them
[05:15:15] <Zxcvb> how many can you put in a battallion?
[05:15:21] <Baastuul> depends on the troop type
[05:15:30] <Baastuul> Like, in Medieval: Total War, take Peasants for example
[05:15:51] <Baastuul> you could have 200 peasants in one battallion (they didn't call them "battallions" actually.. they called them something else)
[05:15:55] <Baastuul> but anyway
[05:16:23] <Baastuul> Royal Knights 20, Order Foot Soldiers 200, 200 spearmen
[05:16:25] <Baastuul> stuff like that
[05:16:38] <Zxcvb> what about defense?
[05:16:51] <Baastuul> You mean when the computer invades your provinces?
[05:16:52] <sbx> is this what they use on that tv show
[05:16:54] <Zxcvb> couldn't the enemy attack your castles while you are off at war
[05:17:02] <Baastuul> yup
[05:17:02] <sbx> decisive battles
[05:17:10] <Baastuul> No idea, sbx.
[05:17:27] * sbx scrolls up, having been afk.
[05:17:40] <Baastuul> I'm surprised you guys haven't heard about these games
[05:18:04] <Baastuul> managing armies and the economy can be tough though
[05:18:27] <Zxcvb> the tv show decisive battles uses animation similar to that in ps2/xbox type sports games to show historic battles
[05:18:39] <Zxcvb> with each foot soldier representing X troops, and such
[05:18:55] <Baastuul> ah
[05:19:12] <Zxcvb> if you have seen the way football players move in sports games on the playstation 2
[05:19:14] <Baastuul> ftp://3dgamers.in-span.net/pub/3dgamers5/games/rome/rometotalware3trailer.zip
[05:19:18] <Baastuul> This is my favorite trailer of R:TW
[05:19:37] <Zxcvb> do you get to use the immortals?
[05:19:45] <Baastuul> nope
[05:19:49] <Zxcvb> or do you not get to play persia
[05:19:56] <Baastuul> There are no such things as "the immortals" in Total War
[05:19:59] <Baastuul> this is all historical
[05:20:02] <Baastuul> no fantasy
[05:20:13] <Zxcvb> yes, the immortals were persia's equivelant to the spartans
[05:20:17] <Baastuul> Ohhh ok
[05:20:29] <Baastuul> Oh wait, yeah I remember them. I was thinking of something else
[05:20:32] <Baastuul> but nope
[05:20:34] <Baastuul> No Persians
[05:20:42] <Baastuul> there are Arab factions and the like in M:TW though
[05:20:56] <Zxcvb> they were called immortals because there were only X amount of them, and if one fell, there were many willing to become one
[05:20:59] <Baastuul> Almohads, Egyptians, and Turkish
[05:21:14] <Zxcvb> much like special forces today, if one dies, there are plenty who would do anything to become a member of the special forces
[05:21:33] <Zxcvb> ah, so is this earlier or later than the war with persia
[05:22:29] <Baastuul> To be honest, I don't know much about the smaller details like that with this game
[05:22:38] <Baastuul> such as the timeline
[05:22:44] <Baastuul> the game doesn't come out until September
[05:22:52] <Baastuul> mid-September, I think
[05:22:56] <Zxcvb> do you get to use the spartan warriors at least?
[05:23:02] <Baastuul> you might be able to
[05:23:05] <Baastuul> you can play as the Greeks
[05:23:25] <Zxcvb> can't remember what the roman special forces were
[05:24:09] <Baastuul> Praetorian Guard
[05:24:29] <Zxcvb> probably can only use 5 in one group of those
[05:25:20] <Zxcvb> are any of the TW games cedega compatible?
[05:25:41] <Baastuul> I've never even seen the word "Cedega" before now. :)
[05:26:09] <Zxcvb> cedega = winex 4.x
[05:26:34] <Baastuul> hummm
[05:26:43] <Baastuul> I think they are just regular old Windows games, not sure what ports they have
[05:26:47] <sbx> what does Cedega mean?
[05:26:57] <sbx> probably depends what directx it needs
[05:27:04] <Baastuul> R:TW needs DirectX 9.0b
[05:27:53] <Zxcvb> it means winex is different enough in code from winehq that they no longer want the word 'wine' in the name
[05:28:24] <sbx> heh i didnt even know there was a difference
[05:28:28] <sbx> ive only heard of winehq
[05:28:37] <Zxcvb> well, it runs doom3 assuming you bypass the clever check for 9x/me (KERNEL.32.DLL:GlobalMemoryStatusEx instead of GetVersion)
[05:29:23] <Zxcvb> were the other two total war games DOS based?
[05:29:27] <Baastuul> Nope
[05:29:29] <Baastuul> Both Windows
[05:30:01] <Zxcvb> that's good, windows games work better than dos (dosbox is slow)
[05:31:49] <Zxcvb> looks like shogun total war works, but only if you remove the copy protection (ugh)
[05:32:07] <Zxcvb> too bad most copy protection nowadays uses kernel device drivers
[05:33:00] <Zxcvb> same thing happend with ultima ix for me, wouldn't detect the original CD
[05:36:12] <sbx> anyone know what worlds of warcraft is like?
[05:36:59] <Zxcvb> isn't that the console (text) based warcraft game?
[05:37:05] <Baastuul> World of Warcraft, you mean? The MMORPG?
[05:37:30] <Zxcvb> there was supposed to be a text only warcraft
[05:37:57] <sbx> its the new game
[05:38:05] <sbx> someone wants me to sign up for the beta
[05:38:58] <Zxcvb> if it's the text based mmorpg warcraft, I prefer MM myself
[05:39:26] <Baastuul> I was honestly not that excited by the cartoony graphics that Blizzard employed in Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft.
[05:39:34] <Baastuul> Although I hear from most people that have played WoW that it is pretty fun.
[05:39:39] <sbx> what do you mean text based?
[05:39:44] <sbx> yeah I never played Warcraft 3
[05:39:52] <sbx> Warcraft 2 was the last I played
[05:39:57] <Zxcvb> there was supposed to be a warcraft game that used no graphics
[05:40:03] <Zxcvb> I mean text based as in zork
[05:40:11] <Baastuul> Infocom!
[05:40:12] <Zxcvb> i.e. "go north", "examine rock"
[05:40:17] <sbx> oh yeah :)
[05:40:24] <sbx> that's not it
[05:40:25] <Zxcvb> which warcraft was that?
[05:40:41] <sbx> if it was multiplayer it was probably 3rd party
[05:40:50] <sbx> well i'd think so anyway, never heard of it
[05:42:04] <Zxcvb> MM is pretty good for text mmorpgs
[05:42:31] <Zxcvb> it even has a graphical display when in the wilderness (graphical as in rogue/moria/angband)
[05:42:43] <sbx> last I played was The Two Towers LPMUD... I wonder if my account is still active
[05:42:50] <sbx> it was a year ago at least
[05:43:15] <Zxcvb> ah, stocking up deathwatch myself
[05:43:38] <Zxcvb> also using the dark path, as beaming to deatwatch consumes all mp
[05:43:48] <Zxcvb> (not related to MM, btw)
[05:44:18] <sbx> dark path?
[05:44:21] <sbx> sounds like SI
[05:44:24] <Zxcvb> right
[05:44:45] <Zxcvb> is going to deathwatch in SI supposed to take all your magic power?
[05:45:10] <sbx> where's deathwatch?
[05:45:30] <sbx> does it have another name? i already forgot
[05:45:32] <Zxcvb> silver seed
[05:45:39] <sbx> and I played SI earlier this year
[05:45:54] <sbx> oh yeah
[05:46:11] <Zxcvb> the place you go when you go to a serpent gate and use the amulet of balance
[05:46:22] <Zxcvb> once you complete the silver seed quests (and get the ring of infinite reagents), you can go there at will
[05:47:08] <sbx> but using the jawbone isnt supposed to use any mana
[05:47:21] <sbx> mp
[05:47:30] <Zxcvb> right
[05:47:36] <Zxcvb> but the balance amulet does
[05:48:00] <Zxcvb> that is why I am stocking up the dark path with tons of food and healing potions
[05:48:02] <sbx> really? I never noticed.
[05:48:17] <sbx> that's where I put my stuff anyway
[05:48:19] <Zxcvb> the permanent (sort of) mass might is nice too
[05:48:42] <sbx> first at the Sleeping Bull and then on the dark path when its accessible
[05:48:50] <sbx> accessable
[05:49:12] <Zxcvb> have you tried the anti-walkthrough, which involves stair making and even walking through the void
[05:50:00] <sbx> nope, just the BG anti-walkthrough
[05:50:02] <sbx> should be fun
[05:50:18] <Zxcvb> pikemen are nice, especially when cremated
[05:50:54] <Zxcvb> tried past posting in bg?
[05:51:04] * sbx hides his pike and shield.
[05:53:22] <Zxcvb> is there any way to make exult use arts automatically?
[05:53:50] <sbx> wjp would know
[05:54:04] <Zxcvb> sdl seems to use oss by default on my system
[05:54:31] <Zxcvb> oh well, got to stock up on some more healing potions
[06:30:42] <servus> Argh
