[09:40:21] <pupnik> greets and happy monday
[09:40:45] <Baastuul> But it is Tuesday!
[09:41:33] <pupnik> oh
[09:41:38] <pupnik> :)
[09:42:18] <pupnik> http://pupnik.de/Exult_Ultima_VII_Nokia_770_02.jpg
[09:42:21] <pupnik> seen this^ ?
[09:42:50] <servus> Becker thy Monday, Tuesday has forsook its umbrella today.
[09:42:58] <Baastuul> Yes!
[09:43:08] <Baastuul> It looks cool. Unfortunately I do not like using cellphones.
[09:43:10] <Baastuul> Hello, Servus!
[09:43:21] <pupnik> heh it's a little computer, not a phone :D
[09:43:39] <servus> Fawn's squire squeaks happily toward your countenance, fair Baastuul!
[09:43:45] <Baastuul> Oh. I just assumed from the word "Nokia." When I looked at the picture, I crinkled my nose a little bit and was like, "That is a weird-looking cellphone, but okay."
[09:46:28] * pupnik can't speak Britannian
[09:46:51] <servus> Wishurantym hurortsancttym tymhurortuus tymort sanctanylem, kalnoxanvasex?!
[09:47:30] <Baastuul> That is such a cumbersome language!
[09:47:40] <Baastuul> It is more cumbersome than Greenlandic!
[09:47:52] <servus> Corpuusmanibetexrelsanctortmaniex!
[09:48:27] <servus> Moobmumootch mulchawroomun mooiemootch moororror?
[09:49:30] * Baastuul strikes you across the jaw!
[09:49:34] <Baastuul> I'll have none of that in my house, young man!
[09:49:41] <Baastuul> Now git! Git!
[09:51:49] <servus> But it's a cow jaw.
[09:51:54] <Baastuul> Oh.
[09:51:56] <Baastuul> Nevermind then.
[09:52:02] <servus> The cow's unwholesome muzzle envelopes your steely fist whole!
[09:52:11] <servus> The fist disappears into the darkness, never to be seen whenceforth.
[09:52:19] <Baastuul> I watched a video on YouTube today of an anaconda biting a man's hand.
[09:57:26] <servus> I bet what really happened to the emps was that the teleportation storms plopped anacondas right on top of them - yep!
[10:00:07] <pupnik> servus, i hand you the most surreal text of the month award
[10:00:19] * Baastuul claps politely.
[10:01:22] <pupnik> anybody feel like writing a cursor-key text input method for Exult Avatar naming and savefile naming?
[10:01:29] <Baastuul> No!
[10:01:32] * Baastuul runs away!
[10:01:40] <pupnik> me neither :/
[10:01:57] <pupnik> gotta do it though... Or just set a stupid name like 'Avatar'
[10:02:03] <pupnik> or 'pupnik' :P
[10:02:20] <Baastuul> I really like your nickname, by the way.
[10:02:46] <pupnik> :) Kennedy's nickname for the puppies that Chruschev gave him as a gift.
[10:02:54] <Baastuul> I did not know this!
[10:03:05] <pupnik> back when sputnik went up
[10:03:27] <pupnik> so i am the space-puppy
[10:04:05] <pupnik> "As someone who has consumed his body-weight in psylocibe mushrooms." - Bill Hicks
[10:04:50] * pupnik sticks to coffee and tea and tobacco
[10:06:27] <Baastuul> I have never drank a cup of coffee in my life before, nor have I ever had any of those fancy coffee shop coffees.
[10:06:34] <Baastuul> I have had sips of coffee and I have had coffee ice cream, though.
[10:06:39] <Baastuul> And I have never smoked a cigarette!
[10:06:50] <Baastuul> Nor a cigar.
[10:06:50] <pupnik> very good
[10:06:56] <Baastuul> But I have had tea!
[10:07:08] <Baastuul> I recently tried to acquire a taste for tea, but failed.
[10:07:09] <pupnik> clean body, clean mind = best
[10:07:27] <servus> Night, my rabid pupniks of yore, all of you!
[10:07:35] <Baastuul> Gute Nacht, mein Herr!
[10:07:53] <servus> Mein Herring!
[10:08:03] * Baastuul hacks at you with a herring.
[10:08:22] * pupnik hands Baastuul the mightiest tree in the forest
[10:08:39] * Baastuul swings it at Servus's direction!
[10:08:54] * servus munch munch
[10:08:56] <Baastuul> Pupnik, where are you from?
[10:09:02] <pupnik> usa/germany
[10:09:07] <Baastuul> Explain!
[10:09:35] <pupnik> first usa now germany
[10:09:55] <Baastuul> An American expatriate!
[10:10:03] <Baastuul> How well do you speak German?
[10:10:15] <pupnik> pretty fluently
[10:10:41] <Baastuul> In which city dost thou reside?
[10:10:50] <pupnik> i like german women and beer
[10:10:58] <pupnik> i live near frankfurt
[10:11:14] <Baastuul> I am an asexual teetotaler!
[10:11:27] <pupnik> just far enough to survive a medium size nuke
[10:11:31] <Baastuul> Well, I am not asexual, but I do tend to avoid alcohol.
[10:11:50] <pupnik> both are damaging to the brain
[10:11:54] <Baastuul> It would be fun if I could claim to be an asexual, teetotaling, vegan, though.
[10:12:11] <Baastuul> Wait! I did not need that comma after "teetotaling" (and possibly even after "vegan")!
[10:12:24] * Baastuul has an OCD-like panic attack!
[10:13:17] <pupnik> what country are you in?
[10:13:42] * pupnik guesses ... .ca
[10:13:43] <Baastuul> Svalbard!
[10:13:54] <Baastuul> No, I live in Washington (the state, not the capital city).
[10:14:36] <pupnik> heh. i had to look up svalbard
[10:15:52] <pupnik> nice. washington state seems fairly ... healthy
[10:16:06] <pupnik> ex minnesotan here
[10:16:21] <Baastuul> How long did you live in Minnesota for?
[10:16:50] <pupnik> about 20 yrs
[10:17:19] <Baastuul> Interestüngö! When did you move to Germany?
[10:17:43] <pupnik> 1999
[10:18:20] <pupnik> they had an IT boom here so jobs were plentiful
[10:19:06] <Baastuul> Neat!
[10:19:22] <Baastuul> When did you begin studying German?
[10:19:53] <pupnik> my parents spoke it at home
[10:20:18] <Baastuul> Oh.
[10:20:20] <Baastuul> That is handy!
[10:20:34] <pupnik> yeah i learned french in high school, and had to use it for a job
[10:20:45] <pupnik> that sucks - high school language skills in a business setting
[10:21:05] <Baastuul> Did you eventually get the hang of it?
[10:21:14] <pupnik> but you can survive with email and translators
[10:21:28] <pupnik> not spoken french
[10:22:28] <pupnik> did you ever take foreign languages?
[10:23:56] <Baastuul> Yeah. I just finished my (pretty much) third year of Spanish, but it was still just a basic level. I studied it during 11th and 12th grade, then my second year of college (which I just finished). I also grew up in Thailand (and my mom is Thai and my dad speaks Thai fairly well), so I know a little bit of Thai, but not too much. I also studied French for two or three years when I was in Thailand, but I do not remember any of it much at all.
[10:24:23] <pupnik> wow
[10:24:35] <pupnik> do you like thai food? I love the spicy vegetable soup and Pad Thai
[10:24:49] <Baastuul> I actually know more basic underlying structures in German than I do with French, but that is not saying much.
[10:25:08] <pupnik> that's pretty wide language experience
[10:25:15] <Baastuul> Yeah, I like some dishes. My mom cooks a lot of Thai food. Pad Thai is good, but it is not my favorite dish. I much prefer rahd nah and pahd see euw.
[10:26:35] <pupnik> saved
[10:27:09] <Baastuul> Saved? You mean you will try those dishes next time you go to a Thai restaurant?
[10:27:19] <Baastuul> Explain yourself, expat!
[10:27:19] <pupnik> yes
[10:27:22] <Baastuul> Oh, okay.
[10:27:25] <Baastuul> Hehe.
[10:27:37] <Baastuul> My brother was born in Stuttgart.
[10:27:40] <pupnik> i see it spelled pahd see yiu, pahd see ew and pahd see-eew
[10:27:49] <pupnik> dad in military?
[10:27:51] <Baastuul> Yeah, the transliterations vary widely from one place to the next.
[10:27:55] <Baastuul> Yup. He was, anyway.
[10:28:12] <Baastuul> My brother was born in 1983.
[10:28:28] <Baastuul> The same year that "99 Luftballons" was released, I do believe!
[10:28:34] <pupnik> man i love some of this C64 music... Listening to Kohina Radio - Thomas E. Petersen (Laxity) - Alibi
[10:28:37] <pupnik> heheh
[10:29:19] <Baastuul> I had a Nena phase.
[10:29:29] <pupnik> http://www.remix64.com/tune_304800.html
[10:29:30] <Baastuul> I still like her music, but I do not listen to it nearly so much as I did a few years ago.
[10:29:32] <pupnik> she was cute
[10:29:38] <Baastuul> Openängú!
[10:31:14] * Baastuul bumbles into the server room of this website saying, "Hai gaiz, ay brought yew all some spicy vegetable Thai soup, lolz," and then accidentally trips over a wire, sending the steaming contents all over the servers and computers, destroying the entire archive of C64 music!
[10:31:56] <pupnik> so do you do admin work or what?
[10:31:57] <Baastuul> I am too much of a young snot to have a true appreciation for the C64, to be honest!
[10:32:15] <Baastuul> Oh, man, I am hardly computer science at all. I like computers and have used them since I was a kid, but I don't have that kind of a mind.
[10:32:18] <Baastuul> I'm an English major. :(
[10:32:33] <pupnik> keeps your options open
[10:32:54] <pupnik> have you read E.M. Forster "The Machine Stops"? (Short story)
[10:32:56] <Baastuul> Yeah, hopefully. I think my "Medieval and Early Modern Studies" minor tends to narrow and limit things, though.
[10:32:58] <Baastuul> Nope!
[10:32:59] <Baastuul> Is it good?
[10:33:13] <pupnik> Written around 1904 or so
[10:33:24] <pupnik> it's amazingly prescient
[10:33:41] <Baastuul> Prescient! There's a word I've been seeing a lot lately. (I've been reading the Dune series.)
[10:33:46] <pupnik> about a society where people spend all their time surfing the web and chatting
[10:33:57] <pupnik> ok dune is amazing
[10:34:06] <pupnik> (written around 1904)
[10:34:28] <Baastuul> E. M. Forster lived to a ripe old age.
[10:35:33] <pupnik> hmm. Well it's one of the most amazing short stories i ever read. Considering the time of origin.
[10:36:04] <Baastuul> http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/E._M._Forster
[10:36:11] <Baastuul> I enjoy reading authors' Wikiquotes.
[10:36:16] <Baastuul> E. M. Forster was very eloquent.
[10:37:16] <Baastuul> "I never expect anything to happen now, and so I am never disappointed. You would be surprised to know what my great events are. Going to the theatre yesterday, talking to you now -- I don't suppose I shall ever meet anything greater."
[10:37:26] <Baastuul> For some reason this sounds a lot like my life.
[10:39:49] <pupnik> reading is the closest thing we can do to experiencing other lives
[10:40:07] <pupnik> Ever read Robert Silverberg - "The Majipoor Chronicles"?
[10:40:44] <Baastuul> No, sir! I don't think I've ever heard of this man.
[10:41:05] <Baastuul> Hang on, I will see if I can find an e-text of E. M. Forster's short story you mentioned.
[10:41:14] <pupnik> It is online
[10:41:29] <pupnik> NM. The silverberg is just average.
[10:41:34] <Baastuul> http://brighton.ncsa.uiuc.edu/prajlich/forster.html
[10:42:04] <pupnik> I'm going to try to crack this programming nut
[10:42:06] <pupnik> will be around
[10:42:17] <Baastuul> This story was written in 1909, not 1904!
[10:42:20] <Baastuul> You... You foo hoo hool!
[10:42:27] * Baastuul picks up a nearby baguette and swats you mercilessly with it!
[10:44:31] <pupnik> there seems to be some contradiction in the online record
[10:44:44] <Baastuul> Perhaps there are two editions.
[10:44:50] <pupnik> most sources claim 1909, the book i had claimed 1904, as does Noel Perrim
[10:46:05] <pupnik> Nonetheless, Forster must have been consuming some spice to think of it.
[10:46:31] <Baastuul> Haha.
[10:46:35] <Baastuul> He was lost in the spice trance.
[10:46:48] <Baastuul> I am going to print this story out. I do not like to read long stories such as this sitting at the computer.
[10:46:54] <Baastuul> Thanks for telling me about it! I am sure it will be a good read.
[10:47:14] <pupnik> You're very welcome.
[10:47:23] <pupnik> it's a good late night read
[10:47:32] <Baastuul> I should actually probably go to bed soon.
[10:47:34] <Baastuul> It's 3:47 AM here.
[10:47:54] <Baastuul> And I will have to begin stringing together another bibliography later today.
[10:48:11] <Baastuul> (I am helping two professors put together a literary criticism textbook, and they are having me make bibliographies.)
[10:49:05] <pupnik> That's cool.
[10:49:12] <pupnik> Sounds like work though.
[10:49:54] <Baastuul> Yeah. It's really tedious. It can get frustrating and time-consuming, too.
[10:50:21] <Baastuul> I have to untangle a lot of what we just came across (i.e.; discrepancies with years and editions and the like).
[10:50:39] <pupnik> mm.. this guy who can help me is online now
[10:50:41] <pupnik> i have to run
[10:50:44] <Baastuul> Okay!
[10:50:51] <Baastuul> Fare thee well.
[10:51:05] <pupnik> .

[14:01:04] <dingo> it used to be black...
[14:01:58] <dingo> ah well
[14:02:09] <dingo> im getting my zaurus updated to openbsd -current and my ppc is already caught up
[14:02:16] <dingo> and i'll begin working on tracking down bugs again
[14:05:57] <dingo> i just freakin hate smashed stacks though
[14:06:11] <dingo> i think the latest openbsd has a method of retaining the stack in most smashes
[14:06:27] <dingo> so that maybe i can track it down
