[01:16:55] --> Marzo has joined #exult
[01:27:30] <Getty> there is no resource for buying ultima 7 online, right?
[01:28:18] <Getty> its really sad that the data is not made free
[01:31:37] <Rottingbeef> There's always eBay!
[01:31:46] <Getty> yeah but just packages and so
[01:31:58] <Getty> and even there... lets see if you can get one still right now
[01:32:05] <Rottingbeef> You can.
[01:32:26] <Getty> lol yes... aehm.. on 3,5" discs 8-)
[01:32:34] * Getty checks his PC....
[01:32:35] <Rottingbeef> http://video-games.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Ultima+7&_sacat=1249
[01:32:43] <Getty> i mean i'm lucky, i got it anyway
[01:32:59] <Getty> i just think about if its worth to promote exult at all even if the new feature is implemented
[01:33:00] <Rottingbeef> People are selling copies with the CD still.
[01:33:08] <Getty> but i think its not very "mass compatible" with this problem
[01:33:24] <Rottingbeef> But, yeah, I get what you mean. It's too bad there's no way to legitimately purchase the game anymore.
[01:33:38] <Rottingbeef> Other than swapping pre-owned physical copies of the game.
[01:33:47] <Getty> which would get "out" at some point
[01:33:50] <Getty> if you start a higher promotion
[01:34:11] <Getty> a digital sell point would help the handle any amount, but i bet EA is not interesting in talking one minute about this LOL
[01:34:19] <Getty> interested
[01:34:35] <Rottingbeef> Well, the problem is that no one other than EA has the legal basis to be able to sell the game.
[01:34:44] <Getty> right
[01:34:55] <Getty> beside EA would give up the rights or sell it
[01:34:58] <Rottingbeef> Aside from buying it used, that is.
[01:35:00] <Getty> i would prefer EA makes it "free"
[01:35:07] <Getty> imagine.. exult includes data
[01:35:12] * Getty dreaming...
[01:35:38] <Getty> also: exult could then "tune" data, fixes bugs or spice content details without changing anything real
[01:35:42] * Getty dreaming...
[01:35:44] <Getty> ok i should stop
[01:36:10] <Rottingbeef> I'm curious to know how long one could go about distributing Ultima 7 in that way before a cease and desist letter would come.
[01:36:31] <Getty> hehe i bet a long time, the problem is the backward effect WHEN it happens
[01:37:02] <Getty> but i dont know... as far as i remember about the C64 theme
[01:37:13] <Getty> there is some "outdate" line in my eyes for this stuff if the copyright is not renewed
[01:38:38] <Rottingbeef> I'm not sure how long the copyright lasts for games. Ultima 7 is almost 20 years old, but I don't think the copyright would last such a short time.
[01:39:13] <Getty> i dont know, i just see c64.com ;)
[01:39:19] <Rottingbeef> Er, I mean I don't think the copyright would go out of effect so soon.
[01:39:22] <Getty> that was always my proof that this "works"
[01:40:28] <Rottingbeef> I think there's just sort of the abandonware mentality with most game developers. They know they can't profit off of their games much anymore, but I think they do like the fact that people continue to play their games well after their shelf life has expired.
[01:41:16] <Getty> and the funny part is, with U7 and addons they could again
[01:41:24] <Getty> i mean even if they say, they dont wanna give it out for free
[01:41:39] <Rottingbeef> I doubt Ultima 7 would be profitable anymore.
[01:41:45] <Getty> if they accept that soemone sells it online as package for 5$ or so and they get 4$ of that, its still income LOL ;)
[01:41:54] <Getty> with exults tuned engine
[01:41:59] <Rottingbeef> I love Ultima 7 and count it as one of my favorite games, but it wouldn't hold in today's market.
[01:42:18] <Rottingbeef> We're pretty much a very small niche.
[01:42:27] <Getty> i think it would
[01:42:32] <Getty> cause it has something newer games always misses
[01:42:34] <Getty> Style
[01:42:40] <Getty> there is a reason why we still love U7
[01:42:48] <Getty> cause its a more shiny version of U5
[01:42:57] <Getty> (i ignore U6 if i may, it doesnt exist, that never happened)
[01:43:05] <Rottingbeef> Well, have you ever tried to introduce Ultima 7 to a person who has never played it before, but who is familiar with games?
[01:43:09] <Getty> and why we loved U5? cause of the story
[01:43:13] <Getty> yes
[01:43:32] <Rottingbeef> I've tried introducing it to people and it never holds their attention.
[01:43:57] <Getty> yeah with the pixel not really
[01:43:59] <Getty> but.......................
[01:44:03] <Getty> you get what i mean?
[01:44:14] <Getty> the vector mechanism would change much
[01:44:50] <Getty> that would make it definitly a bit more mass compatible
[01:45:03] <Rottingbeef> What do you mean by the "vector mechanism"?
[01:45:24] <Getty> [16:06:01] <f'Marzo> An interesting article to keep in mind for the future of Exult: http://imgur.com/a/gRXPJ
[01:45:24] <Getty> [16:06:01] <f'Marzo> (while the article is in the context of video games, I see no reason why it wouldn't work for U7/SI)
[01:45:24] <Getty> [16:06:01] <f'Marzo> It is about vector scaling of pixel art
[01:45:31] <Getty> [16:09:01] <f'Marzo> I know a guy that is already talking to the article authors (and found a few errors in their source code...) and is working on a version for open source video game emulators; I may be able to adapt his code once he has finished
[01:45:31] <Getty> [16:09:22] <f'Dominus> sounds great.
[01:45:31] <Getty> [16:09:57] <f'Marzo> I have no idea how fast or slow it will be; it is possible that with the correct optimizations, and on a powerful enough computer, it will be real-time
[01:45:48] <Rottingbeef> Opening!
[01:46:16] <Rottingbeef> Oh, this reminds me a little bit of the kind of thing that LucasArts did in releasing the new editions of Monkey Island 1 and 2.
[01:46:24] <Getty> yes
[01:46:31] <Getty> and it actually worked
[01:46:41] <Getty> it was a giant success
[01:47:19] <Getty> whatever, its just sad to see again that "corporation" is blocking the evolvemnt of content that is "dead" for them
[01:47:30] <Getty> probably we could one day make a huge "suggestion" for EA
[01:47:39] <Getty> that they define a list of dead material and/or define an "age" of products
[01:47:48] <Getty> imagine how much games fall under EA
[01:48:00] <Getty> they bought up so much shit they dont care about anymore
[01:50:17] <Rottingbeef> Yeah.
[01:50:35] <Rottingbeef> By the way, do you come here often?
[01:50:39] <Rottingbeef> I don't think we've spoken before today!
[01:52:02] <Getty> we have
[01:52:16] <Getty> i'm always here, sometimes for months not, but mostly i am
[01:52:24] <Getty> and i just use exult when i'm ill and play u7
[01:52:46] <Getty> even thoi must say, i'm more a U5 fan then a U7 fan
[01:52:51] <Rottingbeef> Huh. Sorry, I don't chat here very often, though I idle in the channel all the time, so sometimes it's hard to keep the nicknames straight.
[01:52:52] <Getty> but exult engine makes U7 more cool
[01:53:02] <Rottingbeef> I must admit I never played Ultima V for more than a few minutes. :(
[01:53:11] <Rottingbeef> Do you have a physical copy of Ultima V?
[01:53:20] <Getty> i had severals
[01:53:27] <Rottingbeef> :o
[01:53:27] <Getty> sadly i have no clue where they are
[01:53:34] <Rottingbeef> Are you ill now?
[01:53:36] <Getty> but i must say i played it on C64
[01:53:52] <Getty> no, just my head is working since marzo mentioned that vector thing
[01:53:57] <Getty> cant stop it really
[01:54:01] <Rottingbeef> hehe
[01:54:16] <Getty> i thought that i would offer some free marketing for exult if this new feature gets introduced
[01:54:26] <Getty> and then thought, why marketing? where is the sense? people cnat use it without U7
[01:54:50] <Getty> its like showing them a diamond and then say "yeah now it gets complicated" ;)
[02:03:01] <Getty> oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
[02:03:02] <Getty> http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33518/SXSW_Sees_New_Lord_British_Game_Announcement_Indie_Game_Awards.php

[06:50:18] <jvlee> it's great to see garriott returning to the ultima universe, even if he is required to skirt around the original IP, but i'm still pretty skeptical about this whole social networking game concept

[23:31:10] <Rottingbeef> A part of me kind of wishes Garriott would stop playing around with newfangled ideas and make some more traditional RPGs or something. :p
[23:43:42] <Sevalecan> he owns a castle
[23:43:44] <Sevalecan> I want a castle :(
[23:43:52] <Sevalecan> they are about 300 dollars per square foot.
