[00:29:52] <servus> How come the protagonists and antagonists in stories are always clever and/or strong? Why can't one be developmentally challenged or something?
[00:30:42] <sbx> the ones in anime usually have some weakness or fault or quirks
[00:33:51] <servus> That's a step in the right direction, but a superman with a limp isn't what I had in mind.
[00:34:02] <Baastuul> Forrest Gump.
[00:34:17] <sbx> Special Olympians are your heroes!
[00:35:11] <servus> Yeah Forrest Gump is a good example, I suppose.

[09:04:31] --> abp has joined #exult
[09:05:34] <abp> I'd like to try implementing that "isometric scaler", yet I have no experience with compiling exult. Where can I find some information on how to setup a decent compiling environment under W32?
[09:09:30] <-- Baastuul has left IRC (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))
[09:13:45] <sbx> I think it compiles with MinGW
[09:15:02] <sbx> http://www.mingw.org/
[09:15:06] <sbx> oh and hi
[09:15:19] <abp> hm, ok... another question: should I use (argh) sdl_opengl in order to ensure portability?
[09:15:47] <Colourless> 45 degree rotation will be a HUGE pain in the ass to implement into Exult
[09:15:51] <sbx> I don't know, I never used that.
[09:16:50] <abp> Hm, why colourless?
[09:17:00] <abp> Right now I can't see the drawbacks
[09:17:46] <sbx> mouse/screen-to-shape coordinates?
[09:18:26] <abp> that won't be too difficult
[09:18:41] <abp> although it's something I didn't think of
[09:29:37] --- Colourless is now known as Cless|notHere
[09:29:54] <sbx> wouldn't it be faster to rotate each shape and tile once and save the rotated copy?
[09:31:48] <abp> it's tricky: you should manage a cache, manage the displacement of each shape (rotating it is not enough), and for a not-so-great speed gain
[09:36:56] <sbx> then you have to figure out draw order again
[09:37:13] <sbx> if you rotate the entire screen you don't have to worry about that
[09:38:51] <abp> exactly, and using opengl rotating the entire screen is extremely easy.
[09:39:19] <abp> as I mentioned in the forum, it is just a matter of rendering to a texture, and put it on a rotated quad
[09:40:42] <sbx> have to draw the gumps over that
[09:46:32] <Ordoc> whats up
[09:48:21] <abp> gumps = a few more quads you can render directly using the gumps themselves as textures
[09:48:49] <Ordoc> gotta turn my "game" project in in 4 hours
[09:49:18] <Ordoc> ended up using the ultima6 tileset for it heh
[09:55:33] <sbx> cool
[09:55:50] <sbx> someone on ultima6online forum said they ripped off tibia's graphics :p
[09:56:12] <Ordoc> not sure what that is :)
[09:56:18] <Ordoc> tibias graphics that is
[09:56:34] <sbx> tibia is a game that ripped off ultima's graphics
[09:56:38] <Ordoc> ah
[09:56:44] <Ordoc> mine is just a school project heh
[09:56:46] <Ordoc> http://ordoc.cjb.net/germ1.jpg
[09:56:47] <Ordoc> http://ordoc.cjb.net/germ2.jpg
[09:56:53] <sbx> but more u7 than u6
[10:02:04] <sbx> why "germ"?
[10:03:28] <Ordoc> heh
[10:03:36] <Ordoc> no reason really, i was making a title for the window
[10:03:41] <Ordoc> and for some reason i put germ
[10:03:44] <Ordoc> so then i just put it on everything :)
[10:07:50] <abp> By the way, I just set up a first site for "Ashes": http://ashes.lalista.org
[10:12:57] <Ordoc> ashes looks like exult3d :P
[10:13:37] <abp> yes I am still using many U7 shapes as textures. But it's not an exult port
[10:21:48] <Ordoc> pascal and assembler huh :) interesting
[10:22:07] <Ordoc> strangely enough i used the new "LWJGL" (Lightweight Java Game Library) for my project
[10:22:09] <sbx> why "Ashes"?
[10:22:27] <Ordoc> provides openGL,openAL,fmod,devIL bindings to java
[10:22:30] <Ordoc> pretty nice
[10:24:23] <abp> I don't remember why, but it was the name of the first rpg I coded back in 1993 :) Well not really coded, it was done with "unlimited adventures"
[10:24:39] <abp> that construction set for the SSI rpg model
[10:25:27] <Ordoc> i still wanna contrib to nuvie once i get a chance
[10:25:36] <Ordoc> i have no idea whats left to do though
[10:25:45] <sbx> me too!
[10:25:54] <abp> 45 degrees rotation :)
[10:26:00] <Ordoc> exams end saturday
[10:26:15] <Ordoc> but im probably gonna start working soon after that :(
[10:26:21] <Ordoc> not sure if its fulltime or part time yet though
[10:29:26] <Ordoc> abp: 45 degrees rotation? :)
[10:29:50] <abp> yes, we were discussing that before you joined
[10:29:57] <abp> check the exult forum board
[10:30:12] <Ordoc> sadly ive never really posted onthe exult boards or anything
[10:30:22] <Ordoc> been following it forever though
[10:30:33] <Ordoc> im a big ultima junkie since like 1991 :)
[10:31:52] <Ordoc> "Hehe, I like this idea too. I suggested it might be a good idea a long time ago but don't have the time to actually add it. (IRC is probably where I mentioned this) You'd want to cache the tiles after rotating them for speed. "
[10:31:56] <Ordoc> displaylists
[10:31:57] <Ordoc> ?
[10:33:18] <Ordoc> the problem with rendering the whole screen to a texture is it has to be square, and most resolutions aren't square heh
[10:34:17] <abp> it doesn't need to be square at all
[10:34:31] <abp> it must be power of 2 X poer of 2
[10:34:50] <Ordoc> hmm ive always had trouble with glGenTextures on non-square stuff
[10:35:48] <abp> Well you'll had trouble creating non-power of 2 textures
[10:35:57] <sbx> abp: I'm glad you have a website finally. The really cool screenshots are the one with buildings and a road, and the old ones showing day/night and world editor.
[10:35:57] <abp> 256x128 for example is fine, 257x128 is not
[10:36:20] <abp> Thanks sbk! I found a modeler too... so maybe soon I'll have something downloadable.
[10:36:21] <Ordoc> i tried 1024x512 and got all kinds of problems ;) then again my math was probably off :)
[10:36:47] <abp> Warning Ordoc: it always depends on which card/driver you were on. Sometime I think I should swap to DirectX ;)
[10:36:56] <abp> Opengl is quite tricky now and then
[10:37:06] <Ordoc> radeon x800 pro
[10:37:07] <Ordoc> heh
[10:37:36] <abp> Bizarre, it's the same card I am primarily developing on
[10:37:43] <abp> never had problems with nonsquare textures..
[10:37:47] <Ordoc> like I said, my math was probably off and messing something up :)
[10:38:05] <Ordoc> i was probably coding in a not so good state of mind :)
[10:38:32] <Ordoc> like now for example, ive been up for 48 hours ... its 7am
[10:39:17] <abp> Where?
[10:39:30] <Ordoc> east coast USA :)
[10:51:09] <abp> Lunchtime in italy, instead
[10:51:13] --- abp is now known as abp_lunch
[10:51:16] <abp_lunch> catch you later
[11:05:37] <Ordoc> have a good one
[11:11:08] <servus> And here I wake up at 4:10 AM
[11:13:58] <Ordoc> heh
[11:15:08] <sbx> I'm about to go to sleep at 6:12AM.
[11:15:52] <servus> I think I'm up for the day.

[20:33:57] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Dominus
[20:34:07] <Dominus> hey ho
[20:35:17] <Dominus> wjp: , Fingolfin, I'm currently reading "Chainfire" (sword of truth). I wish they could attach a small synopsis of the other books since I kind of seem to forget stuff :)
[20:36:26] <wjp> how's the level of preaching/speeching compared to the previous one?
[20:36:45] <Dominus> so far tolerable
[20:36:51] <Dominus> just t
[20:37:29] <Dominus> just some sections I skipped while reading because he is describing the way through the keep and that's kind of boring
[20:38:04] <wjp> I'll probably pick up the paperback if I happen to see it in a bookstore
[20:38:13] <Dominus> should just write "after hours finding their way through the labyrinth they arrived at their destination" instead of writing two chapters about it :)
[20:38:42] * Fingolfin will go for the paperback, too
[20:38:49] <Fingolfin> Dominus: yeah... :-/
[20:38:59] <Fingolfin> that's the problem with those series, I am afraid
[20:39:08] <Fingolfin> both for SoT, and also for WoT <sigh>
[20:39:29] <wjp> I heard some rumours the next WoT book should have some more action again, I think :-)
[20:39:41] <Dominus> but that's the reason I never got good marks in writing essays since I'm more cutting to the point instead of writing in circles around it
[20:39:58] * Fingolfin is actually currently re-reading the Darkover cycle. I never read those books in their "chronological" order before, and boy, everything makes a lot more sense now. And you gotta admire how things fit together, considering they were written in a totall different order :-)
[20:40:51] <wjp> I'm currently reading Discworld novels
[20:41:05] <wjp> and read Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle recently
[20:42:11] <Fingolfin> don't know that one, I am afraid
[20:42:20] <Fingolfin> but DW is of course cult :-)
[20:42:36] <wjp> I thought I'd finally do something about never having read one :-)
[20:42:48] <Fingolfin> in fact many of my math student friends seem to love DW (besides Hitchhiker's, of course ;-)
[20:42:49] <wjp> just started in number 8 now
[20:42:54] <Fingolfin> tsk tsk tsk :-)
[20:43:04] <Dominus> I liked the cryptonomicon but tried "quicksilver" by Stephenson and didn't get beyond the first chapters before being distracted
[20:43:29] <wjp> it took a while before I got 'into' Quicksilver
[20:43:53] <wjp> I hadn't expected to read the 2nd and 3rd book of the series when I was starting Quicksilver :-)
[20:44:40] <Dominus> I recently read "The lust lizard of melancholy cove" by christopher moore, very good and funny. When an ancient beast tries to fuck a petrol truck it has its high points
[20:44:56] <Fingolfin> sounds... bizarre :-)
[20:45:02] <wjp> yes... :-)
[20:45:03] <Dominus> I'll give quicksilver another try sometime
[20:45:53] <Dominus> http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0380792745/qid=1115066728/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/002-5804452-3164003?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
[20:49:02] <Dominus> I also recently read "Hitchhiker...". I always didn't want to read it because people told me I HAD to read it and that it is good. But when someone told me I HAD to read it because it is sick and recited a passage from it I belived and finally read the books.
[20:49:10] <Dominus> I was not disappointed :)
[20:49:49] <Dominus> I sometimes have problems with things people tell me I HAVE to do
[20:50:14] <wjp> like "whatever you do, do NOT read HHGTTG!" ? :-)
[20:50:50] <Dominus> he he, not quite
[20:51:49] <Dominus> that doesn't work, because it is too obvious :)
[20:52:32] <wjp> how about baiting? "You probably wouldn't like HHGTTG... the humour would be too complicated for you" ;-)
[20:53:26] <wjp> (or would that mainly get somebody kicked? ;-) )
[20:53:33] <Dominus> nope, the actual way to get me to read it was "you will like it, because the humor is very british and very sick"
[20:53:59] <Dominus> and then the passage with the sperm whale was recited
[20:57:44] <wjp> :-)

[22:03:27] <wjp> time to go; good night
[22:03:51] <Airsoul> whoa, i just had a problem in serpent isle. time wouldn't progress any more, stayed at 11:38 pm. quickloading fixed it
[22:04:22] <Airsoul> should i level up a little before i do the silver seed? or is it okay to take an untrained party before mountains of freedom?
