[18:38:03] <Baastuul> Hello, weedar. :o
[18:38:27] <weedar> Hi Baastuul! =)
[18:38:36] <Baastuul> What's up?
[18:39:39] <weedar> I'm browsing through the exult code, I was planning on maybe/possibly try to create a multiplayer version of exult (similar to u6o) - until I just now realised how much c++ I've forgotten
[18:40:01] <Baastuul> hehehe
[18:40:14] <Baastuul> I remember a while back somebody tried making a multiplayer version of Ultima 7.
[18:40:25] <Baastuul> I'm not sure if he's still working on it.
[18:41:50] <weedar> oh, I can't remember seeing anything about it on the exult forum?
[18:42:20] <weedar> unless by "try" you mean somebody mentioned wanting to do it ;)
[18:42:53] <weedar> I'll probably at least try "something", the idea is just too fun to not at least give it a go
[18:43:07] <Baastuul> Well, it was a project separate from Exult, I believe.
[18:43:13] <Baastuul> The guy had a website with a test server and everything.
[18:43:26] <Baastuul> He actually managed to launch it off the ground for a while, I believe, but I never actually tried it for myself.
[18:44:00] <weedar> aw, now I'm really sad I missed it
[18:44:56] <weedar> I played ultima 6 online for a short while, it was great fun. But I belive u7 would be even better. But I think Origin might mind seeing as it is REALLY similar to ultima online =)
[18:45:11] <Baastuul> hehe
[18:45:19] <Baastuul> Well, too late for that seeing as Origin is now dead. :D
[18:45:52] <weedar> I guess I mean EA then, they're still running Ultima Online, right?
[18:46:54] <Baastuul> Yap!
[18:49:16] <weedar> Heh, I wonder why nobody has suggested an ultima 8 online yet :p
[18:50:50] <Baastuul> I hate to admit it, but Ultima 8 was actually my introduction to the Ultima series.
[18:51:16] <Baastuul> I enjoyed playing it just for its non-linear style, but when I found Ultima 7, I immediately became hooked.
[18:51:41] <weedar> I guess it was for alot of people. I enjoyed Ultima 8 myself, but not in the way I enjoy u7
[18:52:42] <weedar> Have you tried any mods for u7?
[18:53:32] <Baastuul> Nope.
[18:53:50] <Baastuul> Well, not if you count Exult or Ron Windeyer's (I think that was his name) program for getting Ultima 7 to run in Windows.
[18:53:53] <Baastuul> But those aren't really mods.
[18:54:36] <weedar> I downloaded that quests & interactions mod, but I couldn't get it to work. yet.
[18:54:54] <Baastuul> What does it do?
[18:54:58] <Baastuul> Well, supposedly do. :)
[18:55:35] <weedar> It fixes some of the dialogs to improve consistency/continuity. also adds a few minor quests
[18:56:11] <weedar> one of the things it fixes is the cleanup of cove, which was one subplot I really hated that it never become completed
[18:56:40] <Baastuul> Refresh my memory in how it was never completed. I remember something about it not being complete, but what was it, again?
[18:57:58] <weedar> You have to take a bill to the mayor of Cove to have him sign, return it to one of LB's advisors. The bill is about outlawing polluting the river near Cove, if I remember correctly. The bug in the game and exult is that you can return the bill and then be asked to take the bill to cove again. And again, and again..
[18:58:30] <Baastuul> Ahhh, I remember that.
[18:58:44] <weedar> The fix alters the conversations with the advisor after you return the signed bill and also gradually cleans up the junk near Cove
[18:59:07] <Baastuul> Cool! I remember I tried to clean up all the junk myself, and it crashed the game. :p
[18:59:14] <weedar> haha :D
[18:59:16] <Baastuul> I think that was when I still was playing it in DOS,though.
[18:59:28] <Baastuul> I dragged over a barrel and just picked up everything that was draggable and put it in there.
[19:00:47] <weedar> man playing U7 before exult was a major issue. When I first played it my computer was a bit too slow, then later it was way too fast (I eventually found moslo)
[19:01:28] <Baastuul> I never figured out how to run Ultima 7 in DOS by myself. My brother could, though.
[19:03:29] <weedar> yeah that memory manager (VOODOO) was insane. I had to create a boot disk that only loaded the mouse driver
[19:03:49] <weedar> I'm not sure, but I think I couldn't play the game with sound because then it didn't have enough memory available
[19:05:07] <Baastuul> Yeah, I still have a couple of our old Ultima 7 boot disks laying around somewhere.
[19:05:16] <Baastuul> I actually remember the night we got sound to work.
[19:05:39] <weedar> :)
[19:05:47] <Baastuul> A guy who lived above us (we were in an apartment building in the early to middle '90s) came over to help us with some computer issues, and then he went ahead and fixed the Ultima 7 sound issue for us.
[19:06:06] <Baastuul> I don't know how he did it, but the first sound I heard was the "victory" song when you first kill off a group of enemies or something.
[19:06:13] <Baastuul> I think he was fighting off those pirates northeast of Vesper.
[19:06:49] <Baastuul> I squealed with excitement as only a young prepubescent lad of a minimal amount of years may squeal with excitement upon hearing something new and exciting.
[19:06:56] <weedar> hehe
[19:07:19] <Baastuul> That sounded really creepy, I know, but damn it, it's the truth!
[19:07:38] <weedar> I can totally relate
[19:08:17] <weedar> I first played ultima 7 at my cousin's house while on vacation. He just placed the headset on my head and told me to play. Then suddenly I hear the Guardian saying "Thou shalt not do that Avatar!"
[19:08:31] <Baastuul> haha
[19:08:44] <Baastuul> The Guardian interruptions were the weirdest for me, for some reason.
[19:08:48] <Baastuul> They were just so in-your-face.
[19:08:59] <weedar> I nearly fell of my seat, that was the first time I heard REAL (not midi) sound from a computer
[19:09:12] <Baastuul> How old were you at the time?
[19:09:20] <Baastuul> I was like 7 or 8 or so when I first started playing Ultima 7.
[19:09:49] <weedar> well, I can't rememer which year it was, but I was born in '82 and Ultima 7 was out in...92, right? So I guess I was 10 at the time
[19:09:58] <Baastuul> ahh
[19:10:00] <Baastuul> Yep
[19:10:05] <Baastuul> I was born in '86!
[19:10:59] <weedar> We are so lucky we didn't have to be teenagers in the 80s with all the tacky hairdos and clothes
[19:12:14] <Baastuul> I witnessed these transformations take place in my sister, and verily, I say, it was horrendous.
[19:12:20] <weedar> hehe
[19:12:42] <Baastuul> Although her style was more that mix of the '80s merging with the '90s.
[19:12:48] <Baastuul> She born in '80.
[19:12:54] <Baastuul> was
[19:18:17] <wjp> a good year to be born in, 1980 :-)
[19:19:34] <Baastuul> Is that the year you were born? :O
[19:20:06] * Baastuul has a terrifying image of wjp prancing down Dutch streets with a boombox on his shoulder as he sports a magnificently colored mohawk, a bright green t-shirt, and pink pants.
[19:20:58] <weedar> or carrying a synth, talking to everyone about the "music" hes making
[19:21:20] <weedar> *he's
[19:25:22] <weedar> The 80s....*shudder* let us speak no more of that vile decade
[19:33:05] <weedar> found the ultima7 online thingy, called The Blackrock Project
[19:33:15] <weedar> but last activity was in 2000 so... :/
[19:35:02] <Baastuul> :(
[19:37:56] <weedar> no matter, I'll give coding a new version a go. And I bet there'd be many others interested. I'll post something in the exult forum whenever I start doing anything :)
[19:38:34] <weedar> but right now I gotta go pick up my gf from work, it's been nice talking to you Baastuul. And nice almost talking to you wjp =)
