[06:03:34] <sbx> hello again
[06:04:06] <Baastuul> Kingdom of Heaven seems like it'll be a pretty good movie.
[06:06:32] --> shazza has joined #exult
[06:12:24] <sbx> never heard of it
[06:16:14] <Baastuul> It's a movie about the Crusades. It comes out on May 6th.
[06:19:00] <sbx> what about Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
[06:19:38] --> Baastuul_ has joined #exult
[06:20:59] <-- Baastuul has left IRC (Nick collision from services.)
[06:21:00] --- Baastuul_ is now known as Baastuul
[06:23:16] <sbx> -_-
[06:24:31] <Baastuul> ?
[06:31:56] <sbx>
[06:32:29] <Baastuul> I am ... listening to emo.
[06:32:55] <sbx> you're not sleeping?
[06:33:06] <Baastuul> No, why would I be?
[06:33:09] <sbx> eh its only 11:30 there isn't it
[06:33:13] <Baastuul> Yeah.
[06:33:38] <sbx> played any good games lately?
[06:35:30] <Baastuul> Not really. I bought Brothers in Arms but I stupidly didn't notice that it was only for DVD-ROMs until after I bought it.
[06:35:37] <Baastuul> So I let my friend borrow it in the meantime.
[06:35:41] <Baastuul> Not like I'll be playing it for a while anyway.
[06:35:55] <Baastuul> I need to finish up Rome: Total War and Beyond Divinity already.
[06:36:05] <Baastuul> I haven't played Beyond Divinity in months because I got bored, but I hate not completing games.
[06:36:15] <Baastuul> What about you?
[06:36:38] <sbx> I hate not completing games too, so I made a list of the ones I need to finish.
[06:37:02] <Baastuul> How big is that list?
[06:37:21] <sbx> hmm
[06:37:28] <sbx> half a dozen
[06:37:55] <Baastuul> :o
[06:37:56] <Baastuul> k~!
[06:37:58] <sbx> Or less than 12 I think.
[06:38:56] <sbx> Rome: Total War is completable? I thought it was one of those strategy simulations.
[06:39:14] <Baastuul> It is.
[06:39:24] <Baastuul> There are campaigns and the such.
[06:39:33] <Baastuul> I could have ended my campaign a long time ago, but I wanted to conquer more of the world.
[06:40:07] <sbx> What do you have? What can you conquer?
[06:40:29] <Baastuul> The three starting factions are the three Roman houses: Julii, Scipii, and Brutii. I started as the Julii.
[06:40:36] <Baastuul> There are a whole host of other factions in the game, though.
[06:40:57] <Baastuul> Basically you just struggle to maintain alliances, conquer settlements, get money, build armies, etc.
[06:41:23] <Baastuul> The campaign ends when you have control of 50 settlements and have taken over Rome and the Senate.
[06:41:49] <Baastuul> I did that a long time ago, but I chose to continue playing just because I wanted to see how far I could expand my empire.
[06:42:30] <sbx> hmm
[06:42:44] <sbx> Where have you gone?
[06:43:00] <Baastuul> What do you mean? How wide my empire stretches?
[06:43:07] <sbx> Yep
[06:43:12] <sbx> besides the original campaign
[06:44:01] <Baastuul> I control all of Europe except for five settlements (all of which are on islands except for Sparta, which is on the very southern tip of Greece)
[06:44:16] <Baastuul> On North Africa, I control from Morocco to Egypt
[06:44:29] <Baastuul> Actually, no... Morocco to Libya
[06:44:31] <Baastuul> I'm about to conquer Egypt
[06:44:45] <Baastuul> And then I have control of all of Asia Minor and east of Eastern Europe
[06:44:51] <Baastuul> Which is basically around Kazahkstan, I think
[06:45:02] <Baastuul> The two settlements up there are called Campus Alanni and Campus Sakae
[06:45:18] <Baastuul> And then I go all the way down to Syria and around Iraq or so
[06:45:38] <Baastuul> As soon as my armies march down, I can take over Jerusalem and some more Middle Eastern settlements
[06:45:53] <sbx> your making your own kingdom of heaven movie
[06:46:04] <Baastuul> haha
[06:46:14] <Baastuul> http://mp3content02.bcst.yahoo.com/b02r01/006/yahoomovies/14/14386803.mov
[06:46:21] <Baastuul> this is the direct link to the extended trailer for that movie, by the way
[06:46:25] <sbx> thanks
[06:46:26] <Baastuul> if you want to download it with getright or something
[06:47:36] <sbx> I was going to say the only remotely similiar game I remember playing was Caesar2, and it isn't similiar at all.
[06:48:18] <sbx> only in that you can take over europe and north africa
[06:48:24] <sbx> do you have to manage anything in Rome?
[06:51:37] <Baastuul> yeah
[06:51:49] <Baastuul> Mainly through the settlements
[06:51:57] <Baastuul> Your family members can be governors of settlements
[06:52:05] <Baastuul> sometimes you have really rotten lousy governors though
[06:52:18] <Baastuul> you can set automanagement on though
[06:52:39] <Baastuul> with governors, though, you can dictate what to build and what troops to train
[06:52:49] <Baastuul> R:TW is overall a real great game
[06:53:08] <Baastuul> the map only covers europe, north africa, and the middle east though
[06:53:41] <Baastuul> so you cannot expand into all of africa or all of asia or anything
[06:53:47] <Baastuul> or conquer the WHOLE world
[06:53:48] <sbx> oh I wouldn't expect more... might be fun to go all the way east to the pacific thuogh :)
[06:53:54] <Baastuul> the campaign ends in AD 14
[06:54:16] <sbx> you don't have a choice?
[06:54:20] <Baastuul> nope
[06:54:25] <Baastuul> my oldest governor controls a settlement called Condate Redonum
[06:54:27] <Baastuul> which is in northern france
[06:54:31] <Baastuul> he is 91 years old
[06:54:48] <Baastuul> one of my governors a while back was called "Lucius the Fat" or something
[06:54:58] <Baastuul> and one of his traits in his list of traits was "Indolent Lardy Arse"
[06:55:13] <sbx> hehe, why does he tolerate such names
[06:55:21] <sbx> how many years do you get total?
[06:55:22] <Baastuul> your family members have retinues and traits
[06:55:29] <sbx> and do you feel constrained by that time limit
[06:55:39] <Baastuul> and basically that adds or subtracts command, management, and influence points, among some other smaller things
[06:55:46] <Baastuul> not so much as i did with medieval: total war
[06:55:52] <Baastuul> in rome: total war, you start in 270 BC I believe
[06:55:57] <Baastuul> and each turn is worth 6 months
[06:56:35] <Baastuul> you work the campaign pretty much from a gigantic map of the known world at the time
[06:56:43] <Baastuul> and move things around like a very intricate chess board
[06:57:01] <Baastuul> you can see your settlements in the city viewer thing too
[06:57:06] <Baastuul> but it isn't a fantastic tool to be honest
[06:57:15] <Baastuul> and then you can also do battles on the battle map which is fun
[06:57:18] <Baastuul> i need a better video card though
[06:57:27] <sbx> and a dvd-rom
[06:57:39] <Baastuul> yes
[06:57:43] <Baastuul> and that
[06:57:48] <sbx> the battles are the main attraction?
[06:57:48] <Baastuul> i think i just need a new computer
[06:57:51] <sbx> :)
[06:57:54] <Baastuul> most everything is getting outdated
[06:57:58] <Baastuul> yeah
[06:58:02] <Baastuul> they're really amazing
[06:58:28] <Baastuul> http://www.dannyatherton.com/images/updates/2005-03-19_RTW_House_of_Julii.jpg
[06:58:33] <Baastuul> this is how much i had conquered as of march 19th
[06:58:47] <Baastuul> basically i control almost everything on that map that is green
[06:58:51] <Baastuul> i mean now
[06:58:55] <Baastuul> i'm the red color on the map
[06:59:05] <Baastuul> and then all of the blue to the east of the green is mine
[06:59:14] <Baastuul> along with a couple of the blue places in africa
[06:59:19] <Baastuul> and all of the british isles
[07:00:50] <Baastuul> when i take over a settlement i usually exterminate the populace
[07:00:55] <Baastuul> makes it easier to control
[07:00:57] <Baastuul> and i get more money :P
[07:01:13] <Baastuul> it just seems like there is no real clear downside to exterminating them
[07:01:34] <sbx> of course not
[07:01:37] <sbx> they are non-romans
[07:01:51] <Baastuul> if you have family members carry your orders out to exterminate the populace, they usually get "Vanquisher" or "Bloody" added to their traits too
[07:01:59] <Baastuul> and those are actually good traits to have because it adds to command, i think
[07:03:40] <sbx> do different provinces' look different? or do their populations act different?
[07:03:52] <sbx> I mean the settlements.
[07:04:11] <Baastuul> the settlements' buildings look a bit different
[07:04:14] <sbx> that would especially be interesting in battle, seeing different types of enemies
[07:04:24] <Baastuul> and yeah
[07:04:26] <Baastuul> the troops look different
[07:04:31] <Baastuul> there are tons of different factions
[07:04:54] <Baastuul> when you get down into the middle east, you have to fight against camel warriors and stuff
[07:04:59] <Baastuul> and then when you fight the carthaginians, their war elephants just plow through your troops
[07:05:10] <Baastuul> europe is full of barbarians and the such
[07:05:18] <Baastuul> and scythia has tons of horse archers
[07:05:23] <sbx> you must have worked around them all, since you've conquered pretty much the entire world
[07:05:27] <Baastuul> you can also hire mercenaries
[07:05:34] <Baastuul> I BROUGHT THE SWORD
[07:05:38] <sbx> w00t
[07:05:54] <sbx> haha
[07:06:06] <sbx> do you name yourself in the game?
[07:06:18] <Baastuul> Tarsus (which is in southern Turkey about) rebelled against me and kicked out my army
[07:06:25] <Baastuul> So I re-took the settlement and exterminated the populace
[07:06:27] <Baastuul> but before doing so
[07:06:29] <sbx> sounds like a bone
[07:06:32] <Baastuul> i hired some Cilician pirates :p
[07:06:38] <Baastuul> haha
[07:06:41] <sbx> thats evil
[07:06:43] <Baastuul> Tibian Tarsii!
[07:06:55] <sbx> right
[07:06:57] <Baastuul> no, there is no manual naming of names
[07:07:05] <sbx> Baastuul the Great
[07:07:34] <Baastuul> no, i'd probably name myself Phallus Testicles III
[07:07:41] <Baastuul> When you say "Testicles," the emphasis is on the third syllable
[07:07:44] <sbx> eh, hehe
[07:07:49] <Baastuul> So it sounds like TestiKLEEZ
[07:07:50] <sbx> I know!
[07:07:56] <sbx> But... III?
[07:07:57] <Baastuul> That was on an episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway
[07:08:02] <Baastuul> Yes
[07:08:06] <Baastuul> I am from a distinguished family
[07:08:10] <Baastuul> or something
[07:09:11] <sbx> hmm, in the game is your family one of those colored factions
[07:09:17] <Baastuul> yeah
[07:09:22] <Baastuul> House of Julii = red
[07:09:28] <Baastuul> House of Scipii = light blue
[07:09:31] <Baastuul> House of Brutii = green
[07:09:40] <sbx> Can you defeat the others or do you have to cooperate?
[07:09:42] <Baastuul> Britannia is the other shade of blue
[07:09:47] <Baastuul> well
[07:09:48] <sbx> Hail Britannia!
[07:09:54] <sbx> Governor Blackthorne
[07:10:10] <Baastuul> I was allied with the two houses up until the the Senate kept on demanding I request the suicides of my faction leaders
[07:10:15] <Baastuul> After the third time, I said screw you and declined it
[07:10:20] <Baastuul> And then they all went to war with me
[07:10:30] <Baastuul> They made a most foolish mistake.
[07:10:51] <Baastuul> As soon as I had time, I sent in an army to Rome and then exterminated them
[07:11:06] <sbx> SUICIDE THIS
[07:11:13] <Baastuul> :D
[07:11:15] <sbx> did you give in to their demands the first two times?
[07:11:21] <Baastuul> yeah
[07:11:34] <sbx> tough luck for those faction leaders
[07:11:35] <Baastuul> the first guy was a great faction leader too ;(
[07:12:19] <sbx> Are you considered the Emperor theb?
[07:12:21] <sbx> then*
[07:12:53] <sbx> yes of course
[07:12:58] <Baastuul> yeah
[07:13:00] <Baastuul> i thinkso
[07:13:18] <sbx> I was thinking it was earlier in history.
[07:14:02] <Baastuul> nah
[07:14:05] <Baastuul> just from 270 BC to AD 14
[07:14:08] <sbx> And you were just a General for your house...
[07:14:17] <sbx> can nearby territories attack?
[07:14:25] <Baastuul> yeah
[07:14:26] <sbx> one's you havn't conquered
[07:14:28] <Baastuul> they often do
[07:14:41] <sbx> so they're also foolish
[07:14:43] <Baastuul> you can send in diplomats to bargain alliances and the such too
[07:14:57] <Baastuul> it's fun bribing armies
[07:15:08] <Baastuul> you can bribe rival faction members
[07:15:12] <sbx> you can kill them after that right?
[07:15:13] <Baastuul> and then they become a part of your family
[07:15:21] <Baastuul> no point in that
[07:15:29] <Baastuul> more fun to use them against the city they came from :p
[07:17:30] <Baastuul> i think the reason why they set the date as to where it is
[07:17:49] <Baastuul> is because they wanted to have that Marcus guy and his form of armies
[07:17:51] <Baastuul> or something
[07:17:54] <Baastuul> i think it was Marcus
[07:18:09] <Baastuul> he was the guy who introduced the whole idea of career soldiers
[07:18:21] <Baastuul> and so that makes way for legionaries
[07:22:28] <sbx> what I was goign to ask is if you can build walls?
[07:22:58] <Baastuul> yep
[07:23:05] <Baastuul> there are multiple levels to all the structures in the game
[07:23:12] <Baastuul> walls start out with Wooden Palisade
[07:23:14] <Baastuul> Then go to Wooden Wall
[07:23:18] <Baastuul> then Stone Wall
[07:23:21] <Baastuul> then Large Stone Wall
[07:23:24] <Baastuul> then Epic Stone Wall
[07:23:38] <sbx> Testicles' Wall
[07:24:05] <Baastuul> Indeed!
[07:24:14] <Baastuul> Hadrian's Wall shall not stand up to the might of my wall
[07:25:05] <sbx> ...
[07:25:12] <sbx> yes I'm sure
[07:26:11] <sbx> That all sounds cool. On the TV show that is said to use the game, the battles look a little jumpy.
