[21:41:46] --> chiv has joined #gemrb
[21:44:10] <chiv> I'm not sure how much this'll be of interest, but I just bumped across a groovy little 2d rpg engine demo - I think its a dead project, but there are a couple of things I saw in it that made me think 'huh. i wouldnt have thought of that'
[21:44:29] <chiv> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q6ISVaM5Ww gets interesting at about 2 minutes
[21:45:35] --> gembot has joined #gemrb
[21:54:06] <chiv> actually the cool bit was the realtime '3d' snow generated on 2d buildings in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtYvNEmmHXE
[21:54:21] <tomprince> That editing interface loks nice.
[21:55:55] <chiv> i had not actually thought it possible to have realtime 3d lighting and geometry intersection.. in 2d?
[21:56:38] <lynxlynxlynx> why is it 2d?
[21:56:59] <-- SiENcE has left IRC (Quit: cya)
[21:57:00] <chiv> all the objects are just 2d renders from 3d max
[21:57:11] <fuzzie> the comments note that it's using the heightmap and textures
[21:57:14] <chiv> with height + normals
[22:00:44] <fuzzie> really lovely looking.
[22:04:09] <tomprince> The next one has dynamic snow on 2d sprites !
[22:05:14] <chiv> i know, my eyebrows nearly escaped the top of my head
[22:05:38] <fuzzie> link?
[22:06:07] <fuzzie> oh right the second one :) yes.
[22:06:07] <chiv> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtYvNEmmHXE
[22:28:38] <edheldil_> it's a really nice one
[22:31:05] <chiv> similar, but not quite as cool http://www.asantee.net/ethanon/index.php?p=home
[22:39:03] <pugvader> hey thanks chiv !
[22:41:34] <pugvader> .oO(youtube, why U no load?)
[22:45:39] <pugvader> ok got it
[22:45:41] <pugvader> beautiful
[22:46:06] <pugvader> snow looks like they alpha blended to a snow image
[22:46:23] <pugvader> btw gliv is a nice image viewer using opengl for transitions
[22:46:54] <tomprince> The description indicates that they do blend pixels to white (and not a snow covered version)
[22:47:34] <pugvader> needs a plot by Ghibli studios
[22:48:04] <pugvader> do i call em or what
[22:48:55] <pugvader> anybody want to draw heightmaps for baldurs gate backgrounds? :)
[22:51:25] <pugvader> hey i must recommend a short story most highly from the early 1900s - E.M. Forster - The Machine Stops "Anybody who uses the Internet should read E.M. Forster's The Machine Stops" http://archive.ncsa.illinois.edu/prajlich/forster.html
[22:52:20] <lynxlynxlynx> heightmaps are bundled, but not so detailed
[22:54:58] <pugvader> yeah i was being silly
[22:55:53] <edheldil_> also normals
[22:57:06] <edheldil_> interesting how the snow hid the sheet welds on the roof
[22:57:48] <edheldil_> and sticked to vertical walls as well
[22:58:26] <edheldil_> the lightning was disappointing, though
[22:59:16] <pugvader> it looked a bit fake on the tree
[22:59:35] <chiv> speaking purely hypothetically, i see no reason why the math used to do the snow couldnt be used for directional lightning
[23:00:05] <pugvader> well a heightmap doesn't equal a full 3d model
[23:00:16] <pugvader> so it is a question of what kinds of errors you are willing to tolerate
[23:00:49] <chiv> I just thought it was a cool example of life left in the old 2d world yet
[23:00:52] <pugvader> imagine a lantern carried by a character - would you tolerate an area lighting algorithm like that seen on the clouds?
[23:01:26] <pugvader> clearly you need/want the shadows cast from the lantern up into surrounding foliage
[23:01:30] <-- lynxlynxlynx has left IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
[23:02:02] <pugvader> that requires a full 3d model (with an isometric view)
[23:03:00] <pugvader> i'm a bit surprised we never saw much in the way of procedural 2d landscapes
[23:05:18] <chiv> all 2.5 stuff is always going to have some kind of fudge factor anyway
[23:05:33] <chiv> its up to the artist to work with it
[23:10:08] <edheldil_> the result was very nice, though
[23:12:03] --> Yoshimo has joined #gemrb
[23:12:58] <chiv> if I had access to this particular engine, i'm quite confident I could do some cool stuff
[23:14:05] <Yoshimo> quite some nice videos
[23:17:42] <Yoshimo> this xna rpg 2.5d engine was a really nice one
[23:19:34] <chiv> unfortunately, owner seems to have got bored of it
[23:20:41] <Yoshimo> "I've reached my primrary target which was 'have it look better than Baldur's Gate 2', which I'm pretty sure it does." :)
[23:25:21] <chiv> i dont buy that creating the normal and heightmaps is extra work either - if you have your 3d model, you already have all the source data you need
[23:36:41] <edheldil_> good night
[23:41:14] <Yoshimo> would be cool to play bg2 in that engine^^
[23:41:41] <-- edheldil_ has left IRC (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
[23:47:11] <chiv> impossible unless you re did all the art though
[23:49:11] <-- |Cable| has left IRC (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
[23:50:48] <chiv> its funny, bg1 got loads of flak for the fact that you end up wandering lost in the wilderness, but I actually thought it added depth to the game
[23:51:33] <chiv> this sort of engine would be great for things like that#
[23:55:18] --> |Cable| has joined #gemrb
[23:58:27] <Yoshimo> this demo game penumbra e o castelo das sombras, is also looking quite nice
