[07:01:18] <Nico__> Hi I am new to using game engines. I want to start with infinity engine bc it was used for bg1-2 and I like the isometric style.
[07:02:30] <Nico__> anyone here from US?
[07:03:45] <-- norito has left IRC (Ping timeout: 244 seconds)
[07:05:15] <edheldil> Nico__: developers are mostly from the Europe
[07:10:19] <Nico__> I am a beginning developer from US.
[07:10:30] <Nico__> I am a C programmer.
[07:11:05] <edheldil> Hi, Nico__
[07:12:02] <edheldil> What's your interest in GemRB? Do you want to participate in the engibne development or do you want to develop a game with GemRB?
[07:12:17] --> GeneralDuke has joined #gemrb
[07:13:22] <Nico__> I dont yet know, I have been studying game development on my own for some time. I have designed some games on paper, I guess I want a develop a game.
[07:13:49] <Nico__> I also need to get some good tools too.
[07:18:30] <Nico__> I am running slackware linux right now, how hard is it to get bg up and running on wine?
[07:23:59] <edheldil> depends on wine version, I am afraid. There were/are certainly some, where it's easy
[07:24:10] <Nico__> are there legel issues for publishing a game created using gemrb?
[07:24:46] <Nico__> I have never used wine before. So I have many questions about wine.
[07:25:24] <Nico__> Can I publish a mod to a game on say steam?
[07:26:11] <edheldil> if you do not use any data files from the original games and stay clear of (A)DnD ruleset, there should not be a problem
[07:27:28] <edheldil> ... if you comply with GPL conditions.
[07:27:37] <Nico__> oh ok.
[07:27:51] <Nico__> The software must also be gpl too.
[07:28:21] <Nico__> ? the engine is gpl but my data files must also be gpl?
[07:28:36] <lynxlynxlynx> no, the data can be licensed separately
[07:28:52] <lynxlynxlynx> you only need wine for the simplest way to install the infinity engine games, nothing more
[07:29:19] <Nico__> oh
[07:30:24] <edheldil> no. GPL requires you to release derivative works under GPL, but unless you incorporate our data (of which there's not much) in your design, your data remain yours
[07:30:55] <edheldil> Hi, lynx
[07:32:17] <Nico__> What languages are used for the engine?
[07:32:30] <edheldil> c++ and python
[07:33:12] <edheldil> python mostly for gui, implementing ad&d ruleset and as a glue
[07:33:24] <edheldil> but mostly the first two
[07:34:23] <Nico__> Can you get by with C style.
[07:35:12] <Nico__> I don't know C++ just learning C.
[07:35:48] <edheldil> I think yes
[07:39:35] <Nico__> I think I need to learn python then too.
[07:40:15] <edheldil> yes, but python is easy
[07:40:29] <Nico__> The tools I have been using are gcc, make, thats about it.
[07:40:49] <edheldil> and for starting with a game, you don't need much python and none of c++
[07:40:55] <Nico__> I still need to learn gimp, blender, and unity or an engine.
[07:42:15] <Nico__> how do you feel about unity?
[07:43:15] <edheldil> I know next to nothing about it, but presumably it's a good choice
[07:44:47] <Nico__> I am new to git also.
[07:45:03] <Nico__> I need a good deal of practice using it.
[07:45:37] <Nico__> in order to use it, I need to develop more, a chicken and the egg situation.
[07:51:07] <-- Textmode has left IRC (Quit: "It was one dev, naked in a room with a carton of cigarettes, a thermos full of coffee and bourbon, and all his summoned angels.")
[07:51:21] <lynxlynxlynx> yeah, but it seems you're overthinking things
[07:54:56] <Nico__> yeah just look up a cheat sheet simple.
