[15:21:18] <tomprince> lynxlynxlynx: I don't know about performance, but otherwise the directory importer dhewgs directory importer patch looks fine. (jh
[15:21:18] <-- pupnik has left IRC (Read error: Operation timed out)
[15:22:15] <tomprince> (just looking at the diff)
[15:23:42] <tomprince> Similarily for the bif importer, except for the useless struct constructors, and perhaps we should keep track of the type/unknown field.
[15:23:45] <fuzzie> From memory, performance is fine.
[15:24:09] <fuzzie> While the BIF importer one isn't fine because it takes way too much time to construct I think..
[15:24:24] <fuzzie> Unless someone fixed the KEY importer since.
[15:26:06] <lynxlynxlynx> there's some stuff in the hashmap branch too
[15:26:43] <lynxlynxlynx> i don't know if his master is complementary or a different approach
[15:27:05] <lynxlynxlynx> but this is all still unmerged iirc
[15:27:40] <fuzzie> master is continuing on from hashmap i think
[15:28:16] <tomprince> Oh, I was looking at the hashmap branch.
[15:28:23] <fuzzie> i hadn't noticed master either..
[15:28:49] <fuzzie> but i do remember the commits and they seemed good too
[15:29:23] <fuzzie> but a few days later dhewg did the order-of-magnitude performance fix and it wasn't so interesting after that :)
[15:29:58] <fuzzie> and if tomprince agrees that it is 'good' cleanup then i think any performance hit is not of a magnitude to worry about.
[15:32:34] <pupnik_> :D
[15:32:37] <tomprince> I think the bif stuff makes the code clearer, although yes, I expect it is a bit expensive right now.
[15:32:47] <pupnik_> all performance hits are a concern for portable/battery powered devices
[15:33:54] <tomprince> You know .. it just occured to me, most of the cost would go away if kept the hashed around but closed the file ....
[15:34:51] --> brad_a has joined #gemrb
[15:34:58] <fuzzie> I have forgotten, again, why we care about closing the files at all.
[15:37:08] <tomprince> That, I don't know, except for GameOnCD, which everybody thinks is likely broken but no-one tests. ;)
[15:37:32] <fuzzie> Well, last time someone complained about it I think there was an obvious error in the cache code.
[15:37:52] <fuzzie> But I know there was something actually broken in the normal case which made me revert the keep-one-BIF-open code.
[15:38:23] <fuzzie> And yes we should probably get rid of GameOnCD at this point and fix it some other time.
[15:38:29] <fuzzie> My bad.
[15:39:53] <fuzzie> Ah, right, I guess BIF files can get deleted from the Cache from underneath the code.
[15:40:12] <fuzzie> Which means that they seem to work right up until the point where it tries to read something from it by re-opening the filename.
[15:40:44] <fuzzie> In which case, keeping the hash stuff around and closing the file seems fine, since it will fail at an obvious point when trying to re-open.
[15:41:58] <lynxlynxlynx> gameoncd can permanently die if you ask me
[15:42:30] <lynxlynxlynx> it never really worked afaik nor is it really useful
[15:42:33] <fuzzie> Well, it is 'nice' for portable devices because you can copy stuff on-demand from a slow SD card to the fast internal storage.
[15:43:14] <fuzzie> But that was my argument (to tomprince) a year ago and I haven't fixed it since, and it can always be reimplemented.
[15:44:06] <tomprince> And if that is what you want, there are perhaps better ways to go about doing that, rather than depending on the original distribution media choices.
[15:44:08] <fuzzie> And the "not all game data available at one time" case indeed seems useless.
[15:44:16] <fuzzie> Yes.
[15:45:03] <tomprince> In particular, the code in dhewg's master branch about keeping track of what is in the cache would probably be useful for that.
[15:45:49] <tomprince> One important thing, (which that code doesn't do) is keeping track of what bits of the cache carry state, and which bits are purely cached.
[15:47:22] <fuzzie> Do you think that could be added later, on top of what dhewg already wrote?
[15:47:34] <tomprince> The keyimporter patch in the hashmap branch also looks sane. Although I think I would move the bodies of the functions from the .h to the .cpp.
[15:48:57] <tomprince> Likely, but I would need to spend more time looking at those patches ... I have gemrb mostly paged out right now.
[15:50:33] <fuzzie> Ah, well. Me too, which is why I was asking. :)
[15:50:34] <tomprince> The cache patches look reasonable, but not obvious enough for me to sign off on them without a few hours staring at the code.
[15:51:04] <tomprince> The hashmap stuff touches code that I have hacked on lots, so it is much easier to page in. :)
[16:04:40] <tomprince> https://gist.github.com/1239486
[16:06:44] <tomprince> Which compiles and runs ...
[16:15:02] <tomprince> Actually, I had/have a branch on github that gets rid of the code to handle CDs, but preserves the behaviour of copying data to the cached directory.

[19:03:47] <gembot_> I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!
[19:06:01] <bookwar1> hi all, are there some rpm-packages with gemrb available ?
[19:28:43] <lynxlynxlynx> yes
[19:28:58] <lynxlynxlynx> probably in fedora
[19:31:06] <lynxlynxlynx> there's a good chance they're old though
[19:31:13] <bookwar1> lynxlynxlynx: yum search gemrb shows nothing
[19:34:39] <bookwar1> but ok, i've already built it from sources :)
[19:36:09] <lynxlynxlynx> better idea anyway
[19:36:20] <lynxlynxlynx> we're just before a new release
[19:41:23] <lynxlynxlynx> tomprince: looks fine to me, but i'm of limited power; just one question: is there any limit on the number of open file handles we could hit?
[19:42:11] <bookwar1> there is a kind of a sale on gog.com this weekend, so i couldn't stay away from buying the whole pack of Planescape Torment, BG1, BG2, IWD1 and IWD2, trying to make them all work now :)
[19:42:49] <lynxlynxlynx> bgs and iwd1 work the best
[19:43:30] <lynxlynxlynx> pst somewhat, while iwd2 is unplayable in many aspects
[19:43:30] <pupnik> :D
[19:44:34] <lynxlynxlynx> but zzz, waking up at 0500 x.x
[19:44:52] <-- lynxlynxlynx has left IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
[19:46:28] <pupnik> \o/ there are still new n900s available....
[19:47:36] <tomprince> lynxlynxlynx: there is such a limit we could hit. Don't know a good way to avoid that.
[19:50:25] <-- brad_a has left IRC (Quit: brad_a)
[19:59:08] <Yoshimo> we have an ubuntu ppa for it i think
[19:59:43] <Yoshimo> https://launchpad.net/~sao/+archive/ppa
[20:02:21] --> brad_a has joined #gemrb
[20:46:48] <brad_a> how are plugin ids generated?
[20:47:12] <fuzzie> i think 'at random', for plain plugins

[22:04:18] <tomprince> plugin ids are entirely random (they only need to be unique.
[22:05:10] <tomprince> PLUGIN_IE_RESOURCEs ie_id comes from the data formats.
[22:09:16] <-- Maighstir has left IRC (Quit: .)
[22:45:06] <brad_a> that plugin_ie_resource looks handy for what im doing. thaks.
[22:45:35] <-- bookwar1 has left #gemrb
[23:16:15] <tomprince> brad_a: IS it to do with an original engine data file, or something that will be located in BIFs?
[23:16:31] <brad_a> ttf fonts
[23:21:30] <tomprince> You probably want plugin_resource, not plugin_ie_resource.
[23:32:48] <tomprince> The IE_RESOURCE is only for things that occur in BIFs, and have type id alloced for in chitin.key files
[23:46:22] <pupnik> so many things
