[10:00:17] --> sbx has joined #nuvie
[11:36:34] --> Yuv422 has joined #nuvie
[11:36:42] <Yuv422> hello
[11:39:38] <sbx> HEY
[11:39:44] <Yuv422> hi sbx
[11:39:49] <sbx> I was just talking to Galleon Dragon about Nuvie. :)
[11:39:54] <sbx> how have you been?
[11:39:59] <Yuv422> I'm good
[11:40:03] <Yuv422> busy
[11:40:09] <sbx> oh
[11:40:10] <Yuv422> how about yourself?
[11:40:11] <sbx> thought so
[11:40:46] <sbx> fine, not too busy... besides my pathfinding changes I want to add pieter luteijn's magic code
[11:40:59] <sbx> thanks for asking
[11:40:59] <Yuv422> cool
[11:41:04] <Yuv422> np
[11:41:11] <sbx> that's what I told galleon, I was actually talking to him a few hours ago
[11:41:42] <sbx> then I started playing with Google Earth, kind of pointless that :)
[11:41:55] <Yuv422> pointless but cool
[11:41:59] <Yuv422> :)
[11:42:08] <sbx> yes it's a cool program, my wasting time with it is pretty pointless
[11:42:17] <sbx> but I found some interesting things
[11:42:54] <sbx> such as flower fields in The Netherlands which naturally doesn't surprise wjp
[11:44:00] <-- trand has left IRC ("솔로천국 커플지옥")
[11:46:26] <sbx> has your ISP been good to you?
[11:47:17] <Yuv422> Yeah it seems to be going ok
[11:47:49] <Yuv422> did you see the post in the forum from the guy that was upset with our snapshot system? ;)
[11:48:40] <sbx> i saw the first one and replied
[11:48:44] <sbx> didn't see if he answered again
[11:48:49] <sbx> the people demand updates!
[12:03:06] --> Yuv422_ has joined #nuvie
[12:03:35] * sbx kicks Yuv422.
[12:04:43] <-- Yuv422 has left IRC (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[12:04:53] <Yuv422_> nice work sbx
[12:05:00] * sbx removes Yuv422_'s excess underscore.
[12:05:00] --- Yuv422_ is now known as yuv422
[12:05:09] --- yuv422 is now known as Yuv422
[12:05:10] <sbx> thanks
[12:08:19] <-- Yuv422 has left IRC (Remote closed the connection)
[12:14:34] * sbx wonders if he's coming back.
[12:18:52] --> Yuv422 has joined #nuvie
[12:19:47] <sbx> ?
[12:20:09] <-- Yuv422 has left IRC (Client Quit)
[12:22:19] --> Yuv422 has joined #nuvie
[12:22:31] <sbx> ??
[12:23:57] <wjp> welcome back :-)
[12:24:43] <wjp> Yuv422: (totally off-topic, but...) do you use any form of TeX on Mac OS X?
[12:25:07] <-- Yuv422 has left IRC (Client Quit)
[12:25:26] <wjp> hm :-)
[12:25:28] <sbx> he's playing with his router
[12:25:40] <sbx> but that's all I know
[12:37:02] <-- Kirben has left IRC (Read error: 104 (Connection reset by peer))
[12:49:14] <sbx> I don't think he's coming back.
[12:56:53] <sbx> he was going to send me a file :\
[12:59:08] --> luteijn has joined #nuvie
[13:05:05] <sbx> hello
[13:13:18] * sbx wonders if luteijn tried the u6o update yet.
[13:13:54] --> Yuv422 has joined #nuvie
[13:14:27] <Yuv422> hmm my irc seems really problamatic now
[13:14:56] <Yuv422> not too sure what is causing it to fail at startup
[13:15:55] <sbx> ahh
[13:15:57] <sbx> it's my fault
[13:16:25] <Yuv422> how's that?
[13:16:41] <sbx> changing your router configuration to send a file
[13:17:01] <Yuv422> hehe I don't think that is it
[13:18:20] <sbx> looks like you're not getting disconnected this time
[13:20:02] <wjp> Yuv422: do you use tex in OS X?
[13:20:20] <Yuv422> nah
[13:23:27] <Yuv422> brb (hopefully)
[13:31:05] --> Yuv422_ has joined #nuvie
[13:38:39] <-- Yuv422_ has left IRC ()
[13:46:10] <sbx> :)
[13:48:09] <-- Yuv422 has left IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[14:02:25] <luteijn> tried the update, already got most of the incompatibilities out of my client.
[14:03:46] <luteijn> had a short talk with Galleon, got updated basetile map file from him (turned out to be exactly same format I used, so could drop in replace it)
[14:04:32] <luteijn> music playing is not really useful (slow, no proper note length control due to jitter)
[14:06:07] <luteijn> the extra level in the castle is nice; worked fine in my client too.
[14:07:00] <sbx> the music playing is a fluff feature so I'm not going to complain about it
[14:07:11] <sbx> but just changing the song when playing them would be better
[14:08:16] <luteijn> would be easy enough to do, as it sends a 'now playing the <instrument>' message. You could just interpret that as a change tune message instead.
[14:09:34] <luteijn> the update doesn't really bring many improvements. More sounds, control over sound levels, but I don't use sound as it annoys people around me ;)
[14:10:51] <luteijn> perhaps the pathfinding improvement was worth it (sends absolute coordinates, instead of relative ones)
[14:11:28] <sbx> that's my favorite one
[14:11:42] <sbx> especially with all the lag I experienced when trying it earlier
[14:11:49] <sbx> it wasnt laggy for anyone else
[14:12:24] <sbx> I also like /me emotes, and powder kegs.
[14:12:30] <luteijn> They still haven't solved all the lag issues, and are thinking of using something they call a 'bitstream'
[14:13:22] <luteijn> I have no idea wha that will be like, but I think the lag could well be improved by better server code; there's not that much data to send after all
[14:14:03] <sbx> The bitstream protocol has been planned for a while. Couldn't hurt.
[14:14:22] <sbx> As you said, they send some unecessary data in messages sometimes.
[14:14:24] <luteijn> My client already did some emote stuff, which I had to fix to work with the new system. I have no idea what is meant by bitstream. do you?
[14:16:58] <luteijn> it might already help if their npcs are less nervously moving around.
[14:17:13] <sbx> Doesn't it mean where they will use a flag of bits in the header to tell what is in the partial message (like they do with world updates), and then only send as many bits as are necessary to complete a field. (depending on payload type) We already discussed it.
[14:17:32] <sbx> I really want a talk window.
[14:18:57] <luteijn> with my client it already keeps the select cursor over the npc; it would be easy enough for their client to remember the last selection too, and move the mouse back there. problem is that you still ahve to click, can't select with the keyboard..
[14:19:18] <sbx> I just want it to show a scroll like U6.
[14:19:27] <luteijn> also more than one level of message recall would be nice
[14:20:17] <sbx> Don't accept input until everything waiting to be said has been.
[14:20:39] <sbx> I'm sure that's planned, but it looks like they have to change the conversation format every time they want to change how conversations work.
[14:21:49] <luteijn> I don't think that would be necessary for these changes.. just need to adjust their interpreter to handle the data they have differently
[14:22:25] <luteijn> The 2 new faces are in too ;)
[14:23:54] <sbx> Forgot about that. That's another change I liked.
[14:24:11] <sbx> Why do they say they have to update the conversation files whenever something like that is mentioned?
[14:25:13] <sbx> At least U6O updates more frequently than Nuvie. :)
[14:25:42] <luteijn> I don't know; but the convo files are ofcourse some sort of script that interacts through a certain api they made; it might not be flexible enough..
[14:26:03] <luteijn> yes, nuvie could use some updates ;)
[14:26:06] <sbx> If not for discovering and playing Privateer Remake I would have commited something to CVS already this week.
[14:26:19] <sbx> but I'll probably do it before next week
[14:26:49] <sbx> did you read that I want to put the scripted magic system in?
[14:27:02] <sbx> not sure how ready it is or if you wanted it added yet
[14:27:07] <luteijn> I saw you were going to attempt to use my magic stuff from last year?
[14:27:36] <sbx> yep
[14:27:44] <sbx> old but good
[14:27:46] <luteijn> u6o hacking is slightly more interesting than nuvie to me at the moment, so feel free to grab the last things I made.
[14:28:07] <sbx> alrighty then
[14:28:07] <luteijn> It probably needs work, but might be a good base.
[14:28:20] <sbx> I'm not going to do anything special to it, just get it to compile.
[14:28:49] <sbx> We could use similiar (or identical) scripting for usecode.
[14:29:56] <luteijn> as far as I remember my script interpreter would probably work for use code to, but just because it is so simple. and the Reverse polish notation might be too hard to understand ;)
[14:30:40] <sbx> oh??
[14:30:43] <sbx> havn't looked at all of it
[14:31:06] <sbx> what hacking do you have planned for u6o?
[14:31:56] <luteijn> well, first figure out the new messages; I'm thinking of making a graphical map display (using original 16x16 tiles)
[14:32:37] <luteijn> there's perl bindings for sdl, so I could maybe use those, did some small experiments already.
[14:33:56] <luteijn> the magic stuff is still here http://luteijn.xs4all.nl/html/nuvie/download/ haven't looked at it since november though.
[14:35:15] <sbx> I've got it saved already.
[14:35:34] <sbx> Though my code isn't at hand right now, or I'd be working on it.
[14:36:01] <sbx> just have to fix up party movement a little and add monster chasing
[14:38:24] <luteijn> I guess I'll just wait and see if any of the magic stuff gets used. The magic.txt file should have the documentation for it, I hope it's complete.
[14:42:29] <sbx> It has everything that the html docs on the website have?
[14:53:18] <luteijn> I think it is just the html file called .txt ;)
