[01:18:12] <-- king_crimson has left IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))
[01:18:31] --- kc is now known as king_crimson
[01:19:00] <king_crimson> hi Yuv422, wjp says you're the main guy behind nuvie... it's very cool so far
[01:19:27] <king_crimson> any way i can help other than coding? i can program, but i don't know C++
[01:20:41] <king_crimson> u6 is probably the best game ever, imo.. thanks for helping keep it alive ... i still play it almost daily on my old tandy 1000tx. :)
[01:21:19] <Yuv422> hey
[01:22:47] <Yuv422> you can always test and report areas where nuvie differs from the original
[01:22:48] <king_crimson> well i dunno maybe not THE best, but there's a ton of nostalgia in it for me. back in elementary school i couldn't wait to get home and play more every day lol.
[01:22:49] <Yuv422> :)
[01:23:00] <king_crimson> cool
[01:23:21] <Yuv422> I'm currently reversing the original compiled game.exe
[01:23:39] <Yuv422> looking to get movement and combat 100% logically correct
[01:23:51] <Yuv422> it's a slow but rewarding process
[01:24:13] <king_crimson> good luck. figuring out code like that takes ages yeah. the movement seems pretty good to me.
[01:24:19] <Yuv422> I've even found some bits that were coded and later removed
[01:24:32] <king_crimson> ooh anything exploitable? :)
[01:24:53] <Yuv422> when an npc comes up to have a chat
[01:25:12] <Yuv422> without the player explicitly talking to them
[01:25:26] <Yuv422> in the code they had the option to remove a bit of gold from the player
[01:25:33] <Yuv422> but the code was commented out
[01:25:39] <Yuv422> as far as I can see
[01:25:41] <king_crimson> lol thats pretty interesting actually
[01:26:13] <king_crimson> so i guess you just have it decompiled and through the instructions one by one?
[01:26:20] <king_crimson> go through*
[01:26:31] <Yuv422> yeah, pretty much
[01:27:23] <Yuv422> I'm currently modifying an open source decompiler to convert the asm into c
[01:27:41] <Yuv422> which should make going through the logic a lot quicker
[01:28:33] <king_crimson> excellent.... sounds like you wouldn't need coding help anyway heh
[01:29:14] <Yuv422> any help is always welcome
[01:29:19] <king_crimson> i have a technical question about u6. does the game un-LZW the map tiles and load into RAM before the game starts or does it always do it on the fly?
[01:29:48] <Yuv422> the gfx tiles are always in memory
[01:30:07] <Yuv422> and the map is loaded in chunks
[01:30:29] <Yuv422> it's a pretty complicated structure
[01:30:31] <king_crimson> ok. was just wondering that because it would have explained why it was so slow back in the day when i tried it on an 8088, if it was decompressing constantly
[01:31:03] <Yuv422> the conversations are decompressed as needs
[01:31:08] <Yuv422> needed
[01:31:31] <Yuv422> the save game data isn't compressed
[01:32:45] <king_crimson> i've been trying to figure out how to get all the conversations out of the converse files, been reading that it's in lib_32 which is a list of offsets. i've tried getting those values and extracting the data from there up to the byte before the next entry and un-LZW'ing it but the program i use says it's not LZW. any ideas?
[01:33:38] <Yuv422> the converse files are all packed into a u6 library file
[01:33:44] <Yuv422> well two files
[01:34:21] <Yuv422> we have some tools that can unpack the converse files
[01:34:26] <Yuv422> in the nuvie tools dir
[01:38:22] <king_crimson> oh excellent.. i've been wanting to create an app that lets you edit the u6 data files including graphics, maps, portraits and convos.. thought it would be cool edit the game that detailed. if you had the time then you could even more or less make your own RPG using the engine.
[01:38:55] <Yuv422> there are a few editors out there
[01:39:06] <Yuv422> but they aren't being maintained
[01:39:11] <Yuv422> as far as I can tell
[01:39:27] <Yuv422> http://u6edit.sourceforge.net/
[01:39:29] <king_crimson> yep, haven't seen one updated in many years. i never saw one that can edit the convos though.
[01:39:51] <king_crimson> oh that looks nice
[01:40:04] <king_crimson> i take that back then
[01:40:47] <Yuv422> SB-X once modded Iolo's conversation script so he launched straight into the cheat menu
[01:42:15] <Yuv422> http://3e8.org/hacks/ultima6/
[01:43:29] <king_crimson> awesome... there is no other reason to talk to iolo >:D
[01:44:41] <Yuv422> hehe yeah
[01:44:55] <Yuv422> I find I'm always asking him for objects
[01:45:05] <Yuv422> can I have 5 glass swords please
[01:45:15] <Yuv422> and a powder keg
[01:47:13] <king_crimson> you could always just have iolo give you all the moonstones, the two lenses, and then alt+213 straight to the isle of the avatar :)
[01:47:18] <king_crimson> record win time
[01:47:45] <Yuv422> :)
[01:48:02] <Yuv422> have you seen the ultima 6 walk through video on youtube
[01:48:23] <king_crimson> haven't watched it all, but some
[01:49:27] <Yuv422> I'm currently moving the u6 specific game logic out of C/C++ and into lua script
[01:49:51] <Yuv422> I've just moved the look -> obj code out
[01:51:10] <king_crimson> whats the advantage of lua? not familiar with it.
[01:52:10] <Yuv422> it's easier to work with than C/C++
[01:52:59] <Yuv422> and then we can change game logic faster as we are playing with the logic to make nuvie more like the original
[01:53:16] <Yuv422> and it should be easier to add support for the other two games
[01:54:03] <Yuv422> bbl
[01:54:04] <king_crimson> i need to learn a decent language of these days, all i know how to use is BASIC. i've written stuff like IRCd software, other network tools.. lots of stuff, but the language is still just too limiting.
[01:54:06] <king_crimson> ok
[02:25:13] <Yuv422> it sounds like you're ready to move into another language
