[08:14:55] --> Yuv422 has joined #nuvie
[09:36:41] * Yuv422 looks at adplug
[09:45:25] <wjp> hi
[09:45:30] <Yuv422> hey
[09:45:44] <wjp> I added an SDL_mixer check to configure.ac, btw
[09:45:57] <Yuv422> thanks for that. :)
[09:46:04] <wjp> the check you suggested only checked for the library, and not for the headers
[09:46:13] <Yuv422> ah k
[09:46:20] <wjp> (meaning that the check would succeed if you had the SDL_mixer package installed without the SDL_mixer-devel package)
[09:46:27] <wjp> (on a system like redhat, that is)
[09:47:00] <wjp> I'm only checking for the headers, hoping that that implies that the library itself is there too :-)
[09:47:09] <Yuv422> I've been caught out by the package/package_devel thing in the past. ;)
[09:47:33] <Yuv422> yeah I can't see why you'd have the headers and not the lib.
[09:48:03] <Yuv422> I'm stripping the unneeded audio formats from adplug now
[10:54:02] <Yuv422> do you think anyone has an adlib compatible soundcard these days?
[10:54:17] <Yuv422> should I include the native adlib component of adplug?
[10:55:31] <Kirben> Yes, might be useful for linux users and maybe other ports.
[10:55:42] <Yuv422> righto
[10:57:03] <Kirben> wait, do you mean the adlib emulation or code to use a real adlib sound card ?
[10:57:15] <Yuv422> code to use the real adlib hw
[10:57:40] <Kirben> oh got mixed up, I doubt any would still have those.
[10:58:49] <Kirben> nuvie will offer native midi playback and adlib emulation ? or just one ?
[10:59:13] <Yuv422> well we need adlib emulation to play the original .m files
[10:59:35] <Yuv422> but we will still support the enhanced music through SDL_mixer
[10:59:37] <Kirben> ok was not sure, since midi playback was also mentioned a few times.
[13:02:38] <Yuv422> argh! adplug needs libbinio
[13:02:50] <Yuv422> looks like I'm going to have to rip all that out too
[13:03:23] <Yuv422> and replace it with the NuvieIOFile stuff
[13:06:55] --> armav has joined #nuvie
[13:09:46] <Yuv422> hi armav
[13:10:11] <armav> hello
[13:10:24] <Yuv422> I've started to rip adplug apart
[13:10:34] <armav> what have you discovered?
[13:11:07] <Yuv422> It should work nicely
[13:11:24] <Yuv422> just got to replace the libbio stuff
[13:11:31] <Yuv422> with nuvie io calls
[13:12:06] <Yuv422> libbinio
[13:15:17] <Yuv422> was adlib stereo?
[13:15:57] <armav> opl2 was mono, u6 was written for the opl2
[13:16:32] <Yuv422> ah k
[13:17:36] <armav> Rdosplay uses your sound card's OPL chip for producing synthetic music typical for these chips. For OPL2 (mono) musics it can also simulate stereo by distributing channels in left/right speakers.
[13:17:47] <armav> i have no idea how that could work, though
[13:18:18] <Yuv422> well it will be coming out of SDL_mixer in stero.
[13:18:26] <Yuv422> as that's what SDL_mixer likes
[13:18:38] <Yuv422> or what we've set it to
[13:18:55] <armav> did you get my pm? :)
[13:19:03] <Yuv422> yes
[13:19:11] <Yuv422> did you get my replies?
[13:19:16] <armav> no :(
[13:19:26] <Yuv422> [msg(armav)] hmm let me check
[13:19:26] <Yuv422> [msg(armav)] yes I do
[13:19:26] <Yuv422> [msg(armav)] did you need it back?
[13:19:26] <armav> i just got: [Yuv422] is away (is away: (Auto-Away after 10 mins) [BX-MsgLog On])
[13:19:54] <armav> i don't remember if i included a command list for the driver, but if i did, i need that, because i lost it
[13:20:06] <armav> i still have everything else
[13:20:31] <Yuv422> want me to email it back to you?
[13:20:38] <armav> yes plz!
[13:21:10] <armav> someone mailed me about writing a m to midi converter, and i'm trying to figure out what to tell him
[13:21:30] <Yuv422> ah k
[13:21:34] <Yuv422> that was Adrian
[13:21:51] <Yuv422> we might not need that now we are going to use adplug
[13:22:04] <Yuv422> but it could still be interesting.
[13:22:18] <armav> how much processor time does adplug use? midi might be nice for slow computers
[13:22:22] <Yuv422> the u6adlib.asm file doesn't seem very verbose
[13:22:36] <Yuv422> I haven't tested it yet
[13:22:54] <Yuv422> old computers maybe able to use hardware opl2?
[13:23:35] <armav> doesn't linux have an opl2 driver?
[13:23:48] <armav> i'm not sure about windows, but linux has drivers for everything
[13:24:21] <Yuv422> not sure
[13:24:32] <armav> but platforms with sdl support don't allow direct opl2 access
[13:24:58] <Yuv422> adplug has native opl2 support
[13:25:02] <Yuv422> on some platforms
[13:25:04] <armav> adplug has some hack that lets you use a hardware opl2 in windows, but i don't like that
[13:25:29] <armav> and under dos, it can access the synth directly
[13:26:24] <Yuv422> ah k yeah it does some direct port access
[13:26:48] <Yuv422> time for bed
[13:26:57] <Yuv422> I've emailed that file to you. :)
[13:27:07] <Yuv422> cya
