[19:12:30] <watt> Hey, sweet - http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/
[19:14:25] <watt> Adblock was one of the big things that tied me to firefox, and I don't even have that big of a filter set (I don't mind ads that aren't terrible)
[19:50:27] <Mrrrr> heh, just have my little linksys router running something to remove ads from all the requests from my home network
[19:50:31] <Mrrrr> works so much better
[19:50:35] <Mrrrr> altho, safari? wtf ;/
[19:52:52] <watt> Safari's gotten quite nice in newer version. There are definitely a few reasons I'll still need firefox.
[20:19:28] <Mrrrr> Its got security that ranks along side IE :/
[20:20:33] <Mrrrr> In recent times, longer patching times too, with a lot of flash vendors allowing expoits in ads too... had to fix a few mac boxes with various backdoors/loggers lately because of it
[20:21:19] <Mrrrr> I dont mind tho, mac support I can charge massive rates for, the tools never complain and official crapple support costs triple my rates :/
[21:24:35] <watt> That's a solid point. I've noticed the security issues go up in the last year (although fixes tend to come out fairly quickly)
[21:25:37] <watt> And even Microsoft / IE has gotten much better about security fixes (it just user's never tend to install those :-)
[21:28:17] <Mrrrr> Apple has had kernel exploits unpached for 8 months
[21:28:24] <Mrrrr> while they paid people not to disclose them
[21:29:06] <Mrrrr> That screams "Hurrr, what dont I know?" :/
[21:31:41] <watt> Any chance of a link on that? I don't tend to keep up on security news, just read about fixes as I see them appear.
[21:45:37] <pupnik> pnspafnp
[21:45:40] <pupnik> pnasfpn
[21:45:42] <pupnik> pnasfpn
[21:54:50] <Mrrrr> watt - have a read through the random exploits on something like milw0rm, then if you google for bits you can often find posts on other shady places where things have been removed etc
[21:55:40] <Mrrrr> also, look at the dates of disclosure etc on large security sites, sometimes it shows the date found being months before disclosure (strangely enough , disclosure at the same date as patching)
[21:56:11] <Mrrrr> if that happened in the windows world, everyone would be up in arms
[21:59:04] <Mrrrr> http://news.smh.com.au/web-security-report-says-known-vulnerabilities-fall-because-criminals-pay-to-hide-them/20080212-1rrs.html
[21:59:26] <Mrrrr> then there are things like that, backing up what people like cnet said about osx being the least secure os of 2007
[21:59:42] <-- pupnik has left IRC ("leaving")
[21:59:48] <Mrrrr> and quite frankly, a quick search over at milw0rm will show that :/
[22:11:54] <-- Mrrrr has left IRC (Remote closed the connection)
[22:12:07] --> Mrrrr has joined #pentagram
[22:17:32] <watt> The link doesn't really say much, if anything. milw0rm does list a number of interesting items - not sure what's unpatched by looking at it. (neat site btw.)
[22:18:41] <Mrrrr> yeah, its not really the point, it just gives a nice layout with the dates and all easily accessable
[22:19:12] <Mrrrr> but if you watch when a certain exploit is reported there, then when its patched, using either release notes or actual security report sites
[22:19:17] <Mrrrr> you will see the massive gaps
[22:19:37] <Mrrrr> specially things like QuickTime, exploits are almost weekly, average about 2 months til the holes are closed
[22:19:51] <Mrrrr> and QT is dead easy to exploit since Safari uses it for so much
[22:20:17] <Mrrrr> A lot of the stuff is only really used by the advertisers and stuff atm, but there is just such potential
[22:22:15] <Mrrrr> and yeah, if this is the start of OSX's popularity, it bodes very well for my freelancing :P
[22:24:20] <Mrrrr> anyway, im off - dealing with incompetent samsung management tomorrow - ohh I hate them, 4 months work to get two displays RMA'd, and they still tell me that they are perfectly fine if I dont run them at the advertised rates etc... clearly :/
