[17:22:55] <raptorjesus> yo
[17:35:17] <wjp> hi
[17:35:46] <raptorjesus> oh hey
[17:35:54] <raptorjesus> well i have to apologize to you.
[17:36:22] <raptorjesus> you were right after all. there's nothing wrong with the map scrolling on u8. its just that dosbox makes it look framy
[17:36:45] <wjp> no need to apologize for that :-) discussion is always good
[17:36:49] <raptorjesus> i do seem to finally got to the root of the problem regarding the clunky controls
[17:37:24] <raptorjesus> its a simple matter of innappropriate control methods
[17:37:36] <raptorjesus> the current method is more adapt for a joystick than for a mouse
[17:37:46] <raptorjesus> *adaptable to
[17:38:52] <wjp> do you know Crusader?
[17:39:25] <raptorjesus> yes i do
[17:39:32] <raptorjesus> i only tried it once
[17:39:46] <raptorjesus> i dont recall how the controls work though
[17:39:59] <wjp> that engine is based on the U8 engine, but uses joystick/keypad-style controls
[17:40:24] <wjp> (and was also upgraded to 16 movement directions)
[17:41:00] <raptorjesus> well the current u8 system would make a lot more sense on joystick
[17:41:25] <raptorjesus> its hell to control both speed and direction with the mouse only
[17:41:52] <raptorjesus> once again, a more classic rpg system would be more appropriate
[17:41:58] <wjp> watt: did you ever do anything with crusader control methods? I seem to recall you discussing it at some point
[17:42:04] <raptorjesus> as in click-to-move-here
[17:56:58] <watt> As in keyboard movement.... I had a version of it that worked poorly.... conflicted with the existing avatar mover process
[17:58:12] <raptorjesus> i dont think keyboard control would be good on ultima 8
[17:58:30] <raptorjesus> there are too many corners. the problem would still remain
[17:58:53] <watt> I could be OK, but the joystick in theory ties into the same methods.
[18:00:00] <raptorjesus> yes, but that's what i'm saying. the current system is only acceptable on joystick (or theoretically keyboard). not that it would solve the problem
[18:02:15] <raptorjesus> though technically a click-to-move system would require additional key controls aswell
[18:02:45] <raptorjesus> a run and a step button would be essential for instance
[18:03:07] <raptorjesus> along with a hand/pickup toggle button
[18:08:10] <watt> Right... I was hoping to at some point to have 4 moving methods... classic mouse, keyboard/joystick directional movement, keyboard/joystick movement in relation to direction Avatar faces (W always walks forward), and simple diablo-style click-to-move.
[18:08:43] <watt> Never got around to coding anything too useful though.
[18:09:22] <-- Fingolfin has left IRC ()
[18:11:43] <raptorjesus> indeed. choosing between different control methods would be a nice feature
