[00:34:05] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Kirben
[02:36:40] <-- Dark-Star has left IRC ()
[10:46:37] <-- Kirben has left IRC ("System Meltdown")
[11:01:39] --> wjp has joined #pentagram
[11:01:39] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to wjp
[11:42:54] --> sdogi has joined #pentagram
[11:43:03] <sdogi> hi
[11:43:26] <sdogi> what are you standing for?
[11:43:42] --> Dark-Star has joined #pentagram
[11:45:57] <wjp> hi
[11:46:05] <wjp> "standing for"? what do you mean?
[11:51:11] <sdogi> hehe just kidding... pentagram sounded like occult
[11:51:53] <sdogi> u wiccan?
[11:59:38] <DarkeZzzz> No, we follow the dark arts of programming. *grin*
[12:01:29] <sdogi> :H
[12:03:11] <sdogi> i once used tpascal.. and even created graphical snake game, but i haven't got much time now to write something
[12:03:26] <DarkeZzzz> We command eldrich bugs, summon demons of complexity, and try to avoid using l33t k001 sp33k, 'cause it just makes people sound silly. *grin*
[12:03:39] <sdogi> lol
[12:04:32] * DarkeZzzz is currently lacking time to code something, as is wjp due to Real Life(tm) interfearence. *grin* But soon, however.... *muhahahaha!*
[12:06:18] <sdogi> btw do u know how can i change xterm colors... no all of the x terminals colors... at home the colors are ok.. but here they are like white and very bright yellow and pink
[12:06:20] <DarkeZzzz> The general point of the channel, however, is sitting at the terminus of the url in the /topic though. Even though we seem to talk little about it here. *grin*
[12:06:48] <DarkeZzzz> Raw xterm? Or kconsole or gterm?
[12:07:02] <sdogi> xterm
[12:07:18] <sdogi> gnometerm has the same problem too
[12:07:53] <sdogi> well it isn't a problem really.. but it would be cool to know how
[12:08:06] <DarkeZzzz> Hrm... haven't needed to fiddle with that sort of stuff in a while.
[12:09:50] <sdogi> erm.. lol what was this servers name anyway.. i came here only to learn the bitchx again
[12:10:13] <DarkeZzzz> Running `xterm -bg color -fg color`, with appropriate arguments for colour will change it.
[12:10:15] <DarkeZzzz> freenode.net
[12:10:42] <sdogi> hehe
[12:10:47] --> Fingolfin has joined #pentagram
[12:10:47] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Fingolfin
[12:11:16] <sdogi> anyway.. what do u use for programming?
[12:11:37] <DarkeZzzz> Umm... what do you mean? Language? Compiler?
[12:11:43] <DarkeZzzz> Text editor? *grin*
[12:12:13] <sdogi> language :H
[12:13:06] <sdogi> i am text editor programmer, i write plays
[12:13:09] <Fingolfin> hi
[12:13:23] <DarkeZzzz> Mainly C++, with a bit of Java, Perl and bash on the side. Along with a few dozen other languages I've fiddled with at one point of another.
[12:13:25] <DarkeZzzz> Hiya.
[12:13:31] <DarkeZzzz> Heh.
[12:13:40] <sdogi> i have discovered that there isn't difference when u program or write plays when u know both well
[12:15:07] <DarkeZzzz> Hrm... no, not really. But then you could really say that about anything that takes skill and practice. *grin*
[12:15:38] <sdogi> wee u use c++ ..that's tough
[12:16:42] <sdogi> system is same... u like make program to do something
[12:16:55] <sdogi> i make people to do something.. cry laugh think
[12:17:37] <DarkeZzzz> Yeah. And both are done through 'pushing buttons'. *grin*
[12:17:44] <sdogi> computer OS's are linux windows, i have youngsters and old people :H
[12:17:46] <sdogi> :HHH
[12:18:07] <sdogi> the music and light controls are :H
[12:18:55] * DarkeZzzz *was* talking more metaphoricly... but yes, you could take it literally. *grin*
[12:20:30] <sdogi> well i mean... there are buttons... like when crowd is annoyed by something and actor feels that part that is coming makes crowd angry, then he must play this next part some other way... press to other buttons :1
[12:21:52] <sdogi> well audience is sort of funny anyway.. they usualy laugh to very ...how do i say that.. simple.. robust jokes
[12:21:53] * DarkeZzzz nods.
[12:22:10] <sdogi> that goes for young people
[12:22:53] <DarkeZzzz> That's how it works. Few people seem to get the more elegant, well planned jokes/satire/puns I find.
[12:22:54] <sdogi> but not so young.. and funny is that.. about 10 years ago one journalist said same about old people
[12:23:05] <DarkeZzzz> Heh.
[12:25:31] <sdogi> with time people grow... they should be evolving, but actually they are making a circle
[12:26:50] <DarkeZzzz> Yup. Fashions come and go. Likes and dislikes appear and disappear.
[12:27:12] <DarkeZzzz> (Yet another round of reruns hit the tv... *grin*)
[12:30:36] <sdogi> heh, this place reminds me our telnet talker beneath, *grin* is most used emoticon but in :H shape :HH
[12:32:31] <DarkeZzzz> Too much time spent on MUDs I guess. *grin*
[12:34:34] <sdogi> haven't playd MUDs years
[12:34:50] <DarkeZzzz> Incidentally, what characters are you using in your emotes? They seem to be coming out as :H here, though it might be some weirdness with my fonts.
[12:35:10] <sdogi> yes i mean :H
[12:35:33] <DarkeZzzz> Ahh.
[12:35:36] <sdogi> i don't know how it became grin
[12:35:55] <sdogi> but in many places it is known as grin and i have memorized it like that
[12:36:02] <DarkeZzzz> Someone's typo that just got propagated? *grin*
[12:36:42] * DarkeZzzz could see it as a grin, he was just wondering if it was, however, just a weirdness in the font he used. *grin*
[12:36:53] <sdogi> lol, every telnet user in Estonia follows someones typo :H
[12:37:33] <sdogi> i'am from Estonia btw
[12:37:33] <DarkeZzzz> Standards have been invented by weirder things. *grin*
[12:37:45] <DarkeZzzz> Yup. Guessed from your hostname. *grin*
[12:37:46] <sdogi> and i bet u don't know where it is
[12:38:22] <sdogi> can't guess out much from you ip :H
[12:39:07] <DarkeZzzz> Near Finland? For some unknown reason I was looking up that domain earlier this year. Might even be mentions of it in the logs.
[12:39:37] <sdogi> yup
[12:40:11] <sdogi> but it's not in russia like many think
[12:41:27] <sdogi> u from australia?
[12:41:34] <DarkeZzzz> Yup.
[12:41:58] * DarkeZzzz is playing try-to-find-a-world-map-with-Estonia-on-it so he can get a better idea of precicely where it is. *grin*
[12:42:13] <sdogi> i don't know how to convert ip to domainname but traceroute did it for me
[12:42:30] <sdogi> :H
[12:42:34] <sdogi> it isn't so small :H
[12:42:42] <sdogi> usually capital is marked
[12:42:48] <sdogi> sometimes Tartu too
[12:42:55] <sdogi> Tallinn is the capital
[12:43:37] <DarkeZzzz> Yeah. I just have problems with Europe geography, lots of little countries all squished in together, I can never remember precicely where each one is in relation to another. *grin*
[12:43:51] <sdogi> btw how the hell in world needs traceroute... or ...for what is it user for anyway?
[12:44:38] <sdogi> yeah.. and guess what.. in school i had to learn all of them... that was total brainf..k
[12:44:49] <Dark-Star> sdogi: http://whois.arin.net (US IPs) http://whois.apnic.net (asian-pacific IPs) http://www.ripe.net/whois (european IPs)
[12:45:13] <sdogi> country's can do.. but country and it's capital... #")/%"#=&
[12:45:18] <DarkeZzzz> Generally it's used as a debugging tool to find where your packets are going, it's useful to find loops or to find out where your packets are being lost, so you can call up and yell at whomever is responsible for the network.
[12:45:31] <DarkeZzzz> Heh.
[12:45:51] <sdogi> grin
[12:46:00] <sdogi> i like yelling :H
[12:46:59] <sdogi> well yeah.. this graphical tracerout i saw once was pretty cool, but estonia wasn't marked on it(how come) and i had problems with it
[12:47:21] <DarkeZzzz> Australia's easy. In the middle of nowhere, one country, seven states, eight capitals. *grin*
[12:47:56] <DarkeZzzz> Though it's usually useful to know what your major neighbouring islands and continents are called. *grin*
[12:47:59] <sdogi> yeah
[12:48:42] <sdogi> how is it to travel there... bit uncommon... we usually go to holiday with bus, you have to fly are swim
[12:49:49] <sdogi> * or swim
[12:50:01] <DarkeZzzz> Usually by car or plane inside .au, bus is also popular, but train isn't used regularly. Outside your options are usually only plane, unless you're going to a nearby island, or heading for the 7th state (Tasmania, on an island by itself.)
[12:54:19] <wjp> we're a project writing a new game engine for Ultima 8 :-)
[12:54:25] <wjp> yeah... I'm currently following the mystic path of mathematics :-)
[12:54:27] <wjp> in gnome-terminal you can set the colours from the menu
[12:54:29] <wjp> for an xterm you can either use command-line options or X resources, IIRC. (check 'man xterm')
[12:54:31] <wjp> something like xterm -bg black
[12:54:33] <wjp> 'xterm -bg black -fg white' gives white text on a black background
[12:54:37] <wjp> C++
[12:54:39] <wjp> one of the baltic states; just like Lithuania and one I don't know the english name of :-)
[12:56:59] <sdogi> lol
[12:58:33] <DarkeZzzz> http://go.hrw.com/atlas/norm_htm/europe.htm <- In case you need memory refreshment. *grin*
[12:58:41] <sdogi> it isn't a terminals fault... gnome-terminal's colors are set: system scheme... xterm uses too system scheme, but this scheme suck a bit.. on the other computer where kde is loaded and fathers computer with gnome the colors are ok... but on this p100 with blackbox the colors suck bit
[12:59:08] <sdogi> Ultima 8 was my favourite game btw
[13:00:40] <DarkeZzzz> Unusual. Most people don't seem to like it for one reason or another. *grin*
[13:01:37] <sdogi> really?
[13:02:40] <sdogi> well.. i didn't know what to do with this hydros guy and had some problems with pyros too... i didn't finish one quest
[13:03:00] <DarkeZzzz> Yeah. They don't like the lack of a party. Or the lack of being able to customise the Avatar (I admittedly was unimpressed myself not being able to set his/her gender). Or the gameplay, which was far more 'jumping puzzle' style, then the previous ones in the series.
[13:03:01] <sdogi> i wasn't very tough too...
[13:03:26] <DarkeZzzz> Did you play it before, or after the patch that Origin released to make the game easier?
[13:03:37] <sdogi> umm
[13:03:41] <sdogi> don't know
[13:03:46] <sdogi> it was like many years ago
[13:03:51] <sdogi> pehaps 4-5
[13:06:29] <sdogi> easier.. like monsters died quicker?
[13:06:48] <DarkeZzzz> Removed lots of the jumping puzzles.
[13:06:54] <sdogi> so what are u doing with this Ultima 8 in here? making it customizeable?
[13:06:56] <sdogi> oh
[13:07:14] <DarkeZzzz> The original had stones that moved, and you had to time your jumps to get right on them. The patch stopped the stones from moving, and made jumping much easier.
[13:07:51] <DarkeZzzz> Most of the complaints were that Origin had removed lots of the stuff that had made ultima, 'Ultima', and had added 'Super Mario Avatar' gameplay to compensate.
[13:08:19] <DarkeZzzz> We're trying to make Ultima8 run on modern computers, and different operating systems. *grin*
[13:08:58] <sdogi> oh :1
[13:09:02] <DarkeZzzz> Basicly writing the engine again from scratch, and reusing the original datafiles.
[13:09:16] <DarkeZzzz> Making it customisable is, of course, a part of that.
[13:09:33] <sdogi> how can u learn how does something read db?
[13:09:38] <sdogi> somekind a debuging?
[13:10:58] <DarkeZzzz> A little of that. Mostly it's been trying to work out how the file formats were structured, and how things worked by reverse engineering the files, and comparing the original to tests of the engine we're building.
[13:11:10] <DarkeZzzz> You can see screenshots of progress at the website in the /topic.
[13:11:16] <sdogi> oh
[13:11:28] <sdogi> but how... u like use windows and linux parallel ?
[13:12:37] <DarkeZzzz> I do. I'm currently on a linux machine, and I've got my windows box beside me. Others just reboot into windows, and a couple of the development team use windows themselves.
[13:14:12] <sdogi> oh
[13:15:12] <sdogi> i guess you can leave out wine too... wine should be better... when i start learning programming again i wish i could make wine better
[13:20:15] <sdogi> heh
[13:20:25] <sdogi> u are bringing ultima to modern time too?
[13:21:42] <DarkeZzzz> Something like that. We've already helped rebuild the engine to Ultima7. http://exult.sf.net has more information on that.
[13:25:59] <sdogi> how is it in australia? does it snow?
[13:26:41] <DarkeZzzz> Some parts of it do. I've never seen a snowflake in my life though. *grin*
[13:26:59] <wjp> it actually snowed here last friday
[13:27:05] <wjp> in october... I still have trouble believing it :-)
[13:27:17] <sdogi> hehe
[13:27:21] <wjp> 3-4cm of it, too
[13:27:41] <sdogi> my stairs are covered with 5cm of it right now
[13:34:27] * SB-X goes to try an online game.
[13:34:30] <-- SB-X has left IRC ("...")
[13:37:40] <sdogi> auch
[13:37:42] <sdogi> em
[13:37:55] <sdogi> how does this cvs thing work?
[13:38:00] <sdogi> sounds interasting
[13:42:41] <DarkeZzzz> It's a communal source repository that stores all the changes to the files as they're modified and committed, allowing arbitary 'versions' of the code to be extracted from any point in the history of the repository.
[13:44:04] * DarkeZzzz must disappear to nap. Got to be up to go to work in 6 hours or so. *grin* Bye!
[13:44:16] <sdogi> what's time in there?
[13:44:43] <DarkeZzzz> Around midnight.
[13:44:55] <sdogi> heh
[13:45:00] <sdogi> it's 5pm in here
[13:45:12] <sdogi> ok, gootnite then :)
[13:45:15] <DarkeZzzz> Anyway, my nick says I'm sleeping, so I should be. *grin* Night!
[13:45:42] <sdogi> u made me to want learn programming.. damn
