[20:36:14] <dima_> so what exactly is it, that is missing in the enemy AI compared to original u8?
[20:36:24] <wjp> I think mainly the dynamic pathfinding
[20:36:31] <wjp> i.e., what monsters do when you move around
[20:36:43] <dima_> hmm, it did look quite ok from here in Pentagram
[20:37:03] <wjp> ah, well, that's good :-)
[20:37:07] <dima_> what's different in pathfinding in u8? do they find their "goal" faster?

[20:37:25] <wjp> I don't really know. I haven't spent enough time on it. (Which is part of the issue)

[20:38:38] <wjp> but I think the way actions are interrupted when you are hit is still a bit off

[20:39:11] <dima_> well combat in u8 was clunky even when I first played it under real DOS, so... ;)
[20:39:14] <wjp> I also don't know how close we are with "special" monsters (shapeshifters, ghosts, mages, ...)

[20:39:41] <dima_> the movement and scrolling of the game
[20:39:55] <dima_> I tried to "recreate" the feel of the game extensively on DOSBox
[20:40:09] <dima_> various versions, DaumCafe being my favourite cvs
[20:40:18] <dima_> and it's always so choppy
[20:40:21] <dima_> it's never smooth
[20:40:25] <dima_> even when you "limit" the frames
[20:40:28] <wjp> Colourless did a lot of work on smooth scrolling
[20:40:31] <dima_> and also if you remove the limit.
[20:40:51] <dima_> yeah it's actually the sole reason why I want to play it on Pentagram
[20:41:05] <dima_> (ok and the higher resolutions - that's damn fine looking if I may say so ;))
[20:41:25] <dima_> and well - it plays like a smooth console game, not like a choppy DOS RPG :)
[20:41:35] <wjp> one small caveat is that you can get stuck in some areas if the resolution is higher than normal
[20:41:55] <dima_> yeah I read of that on the exult board some time ago
[20:41:56] <wjp> (basically because you can't get far enough away from some triggers/teleporters to reset them)

[20:42:07] <dima_> didn't really encounter that
[20:42:14] <wjp> lucky :-)
[20:42:19] <dima_> but then I really rushed and did some combat most of the time
[20:42:48] <dima_> after all I think you are not far from a polished port that plays far better than the original :)
[20:43:02] <dima_> I think this remake is really worth it just for that smooth feeling they failed in the original DOS version.
[20:43:03] <wjp> did you complete U8 in pentagram with a recent version?
[20:43:11] <dima_> no I didn't complete it
[20:43:23] <dima_> I wanted to play through once the AI is finished, though :)
[20:43:44] <dima_> just afraid of being stuck at the end because of an undefeatable monster or something I guess -_-
[20:45:13] <dima_> if you one day have all these things ready, don't forget it to put it on your main page, I check it quite regularly even if updates come mostly twice a year or something ;)
