[01:29:09] <Sheng_Gradilla> :)
[01:32:08] <wizardrydragon> hi
[01:33:21] <Sheng_Gradilla> something is different here: http://nu5.sourceforge.net/
[01:54:08] <-- wizardrydragon has left #pentagram ()
[02:38:54] <-- Sheng_Gradilla has left IRC ("Terminando cliente")
[02:39:50] --> SB-X has joined #pentagram
[02:44:04] <Colourless> so when is someone going to rewrite ultima 9
[02:57:46] <Darke> It'd probably be easier just to convert it to a 'mod' to a commercial/open source game engine. Convert the maps/textures/models using conventional tools, then hack in support for whatever scripting language U9 uses, and then just tack the UI/inven/etc on afterwards. But I don't recall U9 having much of a fanbase so I don't really see that happening soon.
[03:01:11] <Colourless> :-)
[03:01:28] <Colourless> pfft stoping all sensible and stuff. you're obviously not darke
[03:06:26] <Darke> Nah. If I didn't stop it sensibly, I'd have random people harassing me about making a remake 'n stuff. I still get occasional requests about my joke about having a copy of U8's expansion from people wanting a copy. O.o
[03:07:28] <Colourless> :-P
[03:17:38] <Darke> http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060901/quantum_01.shtml <- And on an unrelated note, gamasutra's "most important first-person shooters of all time" list. The usual suspects are there Deus Ex, System Shock, System Shock 2 (came 5th), Tribes, though I still don't know how Half Life came first, I found it a really unremarkable FPS, but I played it after Shock2, so that's probably the problem. *grin*
[05:03:15] <Colourless> system shock 2 was post half life... hence problem
[05:04:19] <Darke> THat and it was a 'sleeper hit' too, I guess. Everyone and their dog has played halflife because of counterstrike.
[05:05:13] <Colourless> personally I would have put duke nukem 3d on the list because it did a number of things that other games hadn't done at the time. It introduced greater levels of interactivity, and buzzwording things like destructable environments (even if they are 'prescripted')
[05:05:59] <-- Keal has left IRC ("i am the voice. the meds killed the boy.")
[05:06:57] <Colourless> it's proximity to the release of quake though probably hurt
[05:08:12] <SB-X> Darke: Same here. (played SShock and SS2 first) I thought Half-Life 2 was great, but HL just seemed like a Quake mod. (OK but unremarkable)
[05:09:18] <Darke> ACTION nods. IIRC, Shock1 had the same problem, but it was released at the same time as DOOM. Or DOOM2? I recall the computer mag I had at the time had both of them in it at the same time. The reviewer actually made a comment along the lines that few people would probably play Shock1 because if you had the option of killing with a dart gun, or a shot gun, most of the target market would prefer virtually running around shooting things with a shotgun. *grin
[05:12:35] <Colourless> was released almost same time doom 2
[05:13:02] <Darke> Hrm... there was a chinese release of shock2. I wonder if the dub had delicrox(?) bad french accent also.
[05:14:24] * Darke really needs to get shock2 running on his windows box again, it appears to be having multiple issues, even with the patches to fix the dual core problems and the xp patch. Either that or he could give up and just run it under wine... but that seems almost too easy to do.

[16:49:20] <watt> Anyone ever heard anything about OpenBase Databases before - looks like I have some of their stuff installed and may have been bundled with something else
[16:52:27] <watt> well, I guess its pretty mac-centric
[17:32:52] --- SB-X is now known as sbx|afk

[21:39:43] <Dominus> hi
[22:02:30] <watt> meow
[22:02:44] <watt> wassup?
[22:05:40] <Dominus> hi watt
[22:05:53] <watt> hey.
[22:06:03] <Dominus> when leopard gets released I'm gonna jump onto the mac wagon as well
[22:06:44] <watt> I tells ya' - it's getting popular.
[22:07:53] <Dominus> it is
[22:08:34] <Dominus> and that would be my first brand pc (if I dare name it thus), except for my laptop
[22:08:37] <watt> Shocked by it too because I initially thought the whole intel switch was a bad idea, but here I am on one ;-)
[22:08:59] <Dominus> I think it was their best idea ever
[22:10:00] <watt> Between the whole dual-boot ability now and the multicore procs on everything - yeah
[22:10:36] <Dominus> the move to intel did away the whole big difference between pc and mac and this is really making it easier for having multi platform software
[22:11:29] <watt> perhaps. Don't know if I've seen that effect yet
[22:12:23] <Dominus> for example wine/Darwine
[22:12:51] <Dominus> it wasn't going anywhere fast before and now it actually is coming along
[22:12:58] <watt> yeah. that's true, although I've yet to muck with it
[22:16:06] <wjp> hi
[22:17:12] <watt> hi
[22:19:11] <Dominus> or the whole virtualising like parallels system (or what it's called) was made extremely easier since the move to intel
[22:20:25] <watt> well, yeah, I guess I was just using Q (qemu) to run dos & win 3.1 just a second ago.
[22:20:39] <Dominus> :)
[22:20:58] <watt> ... mostly because I can, but whatever
[22:20:58] <Dominus> I'm using dosbox to run win3.1x :)
[22:21:19] <Dominus> but as of now there doesn't seem to be a good solution for dosbox on intel
[22:21:36] <watt> I was going to wait for an official universal binary before messing with dosbox on this
[22:22:00] <watt> besides, I also wanted to try a side by side comparison.
[22:22:24] <Dominus> I haven't touched quemu yet
[22:22:40] <watt> Q.app makes it very easy
[22:23:02] <watt> http://www.kju-app.org/kju/
[22:23:44] <watt> thinking I might install XP over it sometime and see how well that works
[22:23:58] <Dominus> I'll try to remeber that when leo comes out and I own a mac :)
[22:54:23] <wjp> good night
[22:55:10] <watt> night

[22:56:22] <Dominus> hi Cless
[22:56:35] <wjp> hi Ryan :-)
[22:58:31] <Colourless> hi :-)
[23:09:12] <Dominus> g'night
