[10:24:52] <Colourless> so... would he have come back if i didn't say anything?
[10:25:12] <wjp> hm, depends on when I would have noticed he wasn't here :-)
[10:25:23] <Colourless> he hasn't been here for more than a day :-)
[10:25:31] <Colourless> about a day and a half actually
[10:26:51] * Darke thinks exultbot needs to franticly msg wjp if it can't find the channel. *grin*
[10:27:07] <wjp> actually it should ping the server from time to time
[10:28:46] <sbx> and it should write something in the log to reflect its not-in-channel status
[10:28:56] <wjp> it didn't know it wasn't here :-)
[10:41:54] <wjp> let's see.. what would be a reasonable ping timeout?
[10:42:34] <wjp> 10 minutes or so?
[10:42:40] <wjp> 5 minutes?
[10:43:44] <Darke> 5 minutes should be more then enough.
[10:44:19] <wjp> is pinging every 5 minutes too often?
[10:44:35] <Darke> Hrm... yeah, probably.
[10:44:51] <Darke> Once every 15 minutes, maybe?
[10:45:32] <wjp> so then it would take between 5 and 20 minutes for it to reconnect
[10:47:40] <Darke> Sounds fine. It's not as if we'd be missing Ultra Critical Information in that time span. *grin*
[10:53:23] <wjp> ok, I hope this will work

[11:08:57] * sbx looks at Darke.
[11:08:58] * sbx looks at DarkeZzz.
[11:09:01] <sbx> Darke: Quick, tie him up while he's asleep!
[11:13:42] * DarkeZzz acks!
[11:16:44] <-- Darke has left IRC (Read error: 110 (Connection timed out))

[11:19:30] <wjp> now I just hope it doesn't decide to randomly reconnect :-)
[11:21:37] * DarkeZzz snickers.
[11:21:45] --- DarkeZzz is now known as Darke
[11:21:53] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Darke
[11:46:44] <sbx> wjp: can it write something to the logs when it realizes there have been 15min of no activity?
[11:47:30] <sbx> (or should it)
[11:47:36] <Darke> Given how much nothingness happens on these channels, often for weeks at a time, that'd just mean there was more cruft in the logs. *grin*
[11:48:22] <wjp> sbx: you mean the logs available on the web? why?
[11:50:42] <sbx> One might assume a big block of nothingness is normal when in fact Mr. exultbot is just having a bad day. Of course once he reconnects it is obvious, but you never know how long he was away.
[11:52:03] <wjp> well, the problem is that once exultbot itself can distinguish between 'nothingness' and 'a bad day', he can just reconnect when necessary
[11:54:39] <sbx> ok so we can guess it was about 15min, when you see "exultbot has joined" in the logs
[11:56:07] <wjp> I guess I could make it give a quit message of "ping timeout: 15 minutes" or something
[11:58:19] <sbx> but Darke is right, it just adds more that isn't helpful unless exultbot quits and goes on an extended break or something

[12:17:56] * sbx stands on his hands.
[12:17:56] <sbx> oops
[12:17:56] * sbx stands upright.
[12:19:00] * sbx welcomes exultbot 2.0.
[12:19:36] <Darke> ?version
[12:19:53] <Darke> Darnit!
[12:20:08] * Darke pokes exultbot 'til he tells us his version number.
[12:22:37] * wjp thinks Darke will be poking for a loooong time :-)
[12:31:59] * Darke sets up an auto-poker to poke exultbot and gets back to coding.
[12:46:26] <-- [Kashou-X] has left IRC ("-=SysReset 2.53=-")

[15:28:20] --- sbx is now known as sbx|afk
[19:40:03] <wjp> hm, I wonder if it would be a good idea to make the PathfinderProcess a 'real' process, in the sense that it can take several frames to find a path
[19:40:37] <wjp> might be a good way to prevent the pathfinder from taking up too many CPU cycles on slower machines
[19:41:04] --> Kashou-X has joined #pentagram
[19:41:12] <wjp> and I doubt any sensitive inter-process timing depends on pathfinding anyway
[19:41:44] <wjp> we would have to see how to determine how many nodes to try each frame
[19:42:06] <wjp> and if we actually want to save the entire pathfinding state
[19:42:54] <wjp> I think it would probably be acceptable to restart a pathfinder when reloading, although that does mean we no longer restore to an identical state
[19:44:56] <wjp> hm, I wonder how exult does pathfinding
[21:48:43] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("casts invisibility")
[22:35:17] <wjp> hm, CVS down?
[22:35:46] <wjp> I guess I'll commit this cosmetic pathfinding fix tomorrow, then
[22:35:48] <wjp> g'night
