[17:56:44] <-- Sheng_Gradilla has left IRC ("bye")
[17:58:55] <watt> awesome... 1% metriod fusion challenge complete.. hehe
[18:41:42] <sbx> someone mention metroid fusion?
[18:55:46] <-- Fingolfin has left IRC ("42")
[19:08:34] * watt nods.. I've been playing a lot of it
[19:12:36] <sbx> oh I never have, I just want to play it
[19:14:53] <watt> It pretty good, although some of the bosses are not well designed IMO... a few have attacks that are completely unaviodable.
[19:15:17] <watt> You havew to depend on luck to defeat a few when attempting the 1% challenge.
[19:15:57] <watt> considering 1 to 2 hits by most will kill you when you only have 99 health point.
[19:17:52] <sbx> 1% challenge just recude your health?
[19:19:27] <watt> reduce?
[19:20:00] <sbx> yes sorry
[19:20:50] <watt> Umm... not just your health... you play though tjhe game without picking up any energy tank, missle (except the 1% which is unavoidable), and no power bombs
[19:21:32] <watt> the normal power up you get from bosses do not count toward percentage of items
[19:21:47] <sbx> how long did it take?
[19:22:13] <watt> according to gameplay 2 hours and 8 minutes.
[19:22:28] <watt> more like 4 to 6 hours from all the dying
[19:22:55] <sbx> oh that's not too long
[19:24:00] <watt> nah... but aggravating most of the time
[19:25:57] <watt> all the bosses have core-X's you must defeat after the normal boss, and the 'final' boss has 2 forms before the core-X and then another boss that you must face while escaping .. no saves in between... annoying
[19:26:53] <sbx> i hate it when games do that
[19:26:58] <watt> hmmm... that makes me wonder... where did the term 'boss' come from for video games?
[19:27:08] <sbx> boss of the stage?
[19:27:38] <sbx> boss of all the enemies
[19:27:44] <sbx> don't really know, that's a good question :)
[19:29:08] <servus> watt, you've never wanted to take a smoking plasma rifle to your boss?
[19:29:50] <servus> Really though, it almost certainly came from the fact that the boss was the same type of character as the ones you'd just been fighting, but he controlled them all and was, incomprehensibly, much stronger than them.
[19:30:09] <servus> You have lots of little henchmen you fight through on your way to their -- the -- boss
[19:31:40] <sbx> sounds like Final Fight
[19:36:00] <sbx> bbl
[19:36:02] <-- sbx has left IRC ("clicks the exit button")
[19:39:50] <watt> wikipedia to the rescue
[19:39:51] <watt> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boss_%28video_games%29
[19:42:49] <watt> explains origins... doesn't explain why that word.. but servus' answer works for me
[19:45:40] <watt> interesting just how much game info people added to wikipedia.. well, considering how much games have shaped modern culture I suppose something has to contain extensive history.
[19:48:58] <Colourless> hehe. it even mentions minibosses :-)
[19:55:11] <servus> My favourite Ultima VIII character was Jed Clampett the Daemon, in the plane of fire.
[21:16:32] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("casts improved invisibility")
[21:29:04] <watt> crud... need to downgrade flex to install xorg-x11...
