[00:54:59] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Kirben
[03:48:04] --> watt has joined #pentagram
[04:36:23] <watt> Having trouble trying to think of how to display the options menu, more specifically how to tie the controls menu into it well.
[04:38:37] <watt> needs to be able to fit in 320x200, since that's most likely the minimum resolution to be allowed, and probably in a way that's not dependent on U8's shapes for when crusader support begins to be added.
[04:52:06] <watt> custom graphics for the controls window?
[04:52:18] <watt> hmmm.................
[04:53:04] <watt> but in case probably custom font too.
[05:03:46] <watt> s/in case/in that case/
[05:11:36] <-- watt has left IRC ("using sirc version 2.211+KSIRC/1.3.10")
[08:42:17] <wjp> I was thinking something similar to how we did it in Exult
[11:07:09] --> Colourless has joined #Pentagram
[11:07:09] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[11:09:11] <wjp> hi
[11:10:32] <Colourless> hi
[11:13:56] <Colourless> don't bother with the options menu yet
[11:14:11] <Colourless> we need to think about exactly what we want there
[11:15:04] <Darke> Greetings.
[11:15:32] <Darke> At the very least we need a 'Enable Multiplayer' checkbox, which is in a greyed out 'disabled' state. *nod*
[11:15:39] <Colourless> for u8, i'm thinking use both pages of the diary for the options screens. Probably left page would have 'buttons' to select what set of options to change (audio, video, controls, other things)
[11:15:56] <Colourless> and the right page would be where those options are shown (or swtich to another page or something)
[11:16:32] <Colourless> The 320x200 requirement for Ultima 8 'sucks' as far as UI design goes :-)
[11:17:27] <Colourless> would be nice if we could 'force' people to use scaling with u8 so we could use 'Hi Res' buttons and stuff in the options menus
[11:17:34] <Darke> We could always 'require' u8 run in 640x400 with a x2 simple scaler.
[11:17:49] * Darke removes Colourless from his mind. Outta there dragon!
[11:18:07] <wjp> I'd prefer avoiding that, at least for now
[11:18:26] <Colourless> i would rather we didn't too
[11:19:14] <wjp> anyway, 320x200 should really be enough
[11:19:33] <Colourless> I'm thinking in each options page there should be a 'save/apply' button that will set the current chosen settings.
[11:20:06] <Colourless> and if the users attempts to switch to a different page without saving the settings a dialog box should be shown asking them if they want to be doing that since the settings will be forgotten
[11:20:22] <wjp> or we could have instant-apply
[11:20:33] <Colourless> no, i don't really like instant apply
[11:20:52] <wjp> I don't like having to explicitly save the settings before switching to a different page :-)
[11:21:14] <Colourless> well, have a revert button
[11:21:29] <Colourless> things like video settings, if we want to be 'good software developers' we should 'test' the mode before saving settings
[11:24:24] <Darke> We could auto apply the sensitive changes, and just pop up the standard "Did this work?" modal yes/no box, with a 15 second timeout to revert to default.
[11:25:19] <Colourless> auto apply after exiting a page should be fine
[11:25:55] <Darke> (Given the number of games I still encounter that don't have this. Or force you to restart the application to try it, we're really not being anything but the 'usual' game developers of we don't have it. Not that we shouldn't actually aspire to have higher standards. *grin*)
[11:26:49] <Colourless> i would think of the left page we might have 'ok', 'cancel', and 'revert page' buttons
[11:29:04] <wjp> I would put 'apply' and 'revent' buttons on each options page
[11:29:34] <Colourless> probably a good idea
[11:30:23] <Colourless> ideally crusader would have the same sort of layout for it's stuff too
[11:30:56] <wjp> yeah, although probably not really a book, but just a window with with a vertical bar somewhere
[11:31:02] <wjp> s/with with/with/
[12:58:43] <-- Kirben has left IRC ("System Meltdown")
[14:26:13] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("brb")
[14:29:04] --> Colourless has joined #Pentagram
[14:29:04] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to Colourless
[16:02:58] * wjp got Deus Ex yesterday, so I think I'll go have a look now :-)
[16:05:06] <Colourless> :-)
[16:05:22] <Colourless> make sure it's the latest version
[16:07:22] <wjp> I seem to have 1112f according to the installer
[16:08:24] <wjp> which appears to be the latest
[16:10:00] <Colourless> yeah that should be
[16:10:01] <wjp> oh wow, an installer which does not ask me if I really really really want to create that new folder :-)
[16:10:30] <Colourless> 1112f should be one of the multiplayer patch versions
[16:10:57] <wjp> oh, hm, well, as long as the single player version works :-)
[16:10:59] <Colourless> iirc the single player versions went up to 1014 i think
[16:11:24] <Colourless> well, funny you should mention that... one of the multiplayey versions actually broke single player :-)
[16:11:42] <wjp> oh yay :-)
[16:11:50] <Colourless> not hugely, just a specific part of the game didn't work properly with the initial mp patch
[16:12:48] * wjp watches names of maps scroll by
[16:13:04] <Colourless> yeah, the installer gives you spoilers :-)
[16:13:22] <wjp> area51_final? :-)
[16:13:51] <Colourless> :-)
[16:13:54] <wjp> 80%...
[16:14:30] <Colourless> some people recommend you use the opengl renderer, but i've tended to find the direct3d one was better
[16:15:09] <Colourless> the d3d one at least last time i knew, actually supported all the features properly, but with 1112f things might be different
[16:16:52] <wjp> I can choose d3d or software
[16:17:15] <wjp> oh, no, wait
[16:17:20] <Colourless> if you select the 'show unsupported renders' it should show opengl too :-)
[16:17:37] <Colourless> (or option that is similarly named)
[16:23:45] * wjp successfully picked his first lock. Yay! ;-)
[16:24:35] <Colourless> :-)
[16:50:21] <wjp> not having as much luck with the stealth test... *sigh* :-)
[16:50:32] <wjp> is it me or is it really too dark to see much?
[16:51:03] <Colourless> gamma correction not working?
[16:51:13] <Colourless> stealth test is annoying
[16:55:54] <wjp> I have it at 0.8 right now
[16:58:34] <Colourless> the game is actually fairly dark (especially since you are out side a lot, and it's entirely at night)
[16:58:51] <wjp> right, past that test
[17:14:00] <wjp> hm, initial skills... choices choices :-)
[17:15:08] <Colourless> swimming = useless
[17:15:37] <Colourless> so is the breating one (can't remember it's name)
[17:16:40] <Colourless> s/breating/breathing/
[17:27:43] <wjp> there's no breathing one
[17:28:43] <Colourless> i might be thinking of an aug
[17:36:25] <wjp> I wonder why I can't find a key list anywhere
[17:36:56] <wjp> ah, they hid a manual on the CD
[17:37:15] <Colourless> you know, you 'can' customize the controls
[18:55:59] <wjp> hm, actually I did not know :-)
[18:57:09] <Colourless> um... it is a first person shooter (of sorts)... they all let you change your controls
[19:11:27] <wjp> wow, 250 skill points for finding Manderley's office :-)
[19:12:45] <Colourless> :-)
[19:31:46] <Colourless> here is a small hint.... explore EVERYWHERE!
[19:31:53] <Colourless> you get extra skill points in places
[19:32:02] <Colourless> and you'll find stuff too :-)
[19:36:26] <wjp> now if only I could find a place to replenish BE...
[19:37:00] <wjp> surely there has to be one in HQ
[19:39:55] <Colourless> yeah there should be
[19:40:16] <Colourless> i'm thinking alex's office
[19:45:27] <wjp> hm, only found a bioelectric cell behind a keypadded door there
[19:49:16] <Colourless> hmm
[19:50:29] <Colourless> i can't possibly think of anywhere else there might be a repair bot.
[20:06:04] <wjp> ok, I see your point about exploring :-)
[20:06:18] <wjp> even underwater, it seems :-)
[20:08:02] <wjp> now, second mission
[20:42:47] <Colourless> i'm going
[20:42:49] <Colourless> cya
[20:43:02] <-- Colourless has left IRC ("casts invisibility")
