[22:08:40] <Cahaan> is uwadv still being developped ?
[22:10:47] <sol> no, but i plan to work on it some
[22:10:55] <sol> i was patching it a bit a year ago
[22:11:53] <Cahaan> cool :)
[22:12:21] <Cahaan> good luck in your quest
[22:13:27] <Cahaan> it will be a long journey, but a lot of fans will hail the real avatar and the new rise of the virtues (or something like that)
[22:21:52] <sol> haha
[22:22:01] <sol> well, im also pushing really hard to get the original UW source released
[22:22:44] <sol> i got in contact with Warren Spector & Paul Neurath
[22:22:48] <sol> trying to get Ned Lerner as well
[22:23:06] <sol> emailed the Garriotts too
[22:23:41] <sol> & Mr. Florin
[22:23:45] <sol> seems EA owns the rights to UW
[22:24:31] <sol> Gerhard Florin of EA was in the news, asking for an open source platform for gaming
[22:24:36] <sol> so I figured he'd be the guy to e-mail
[22:28:48] <Cahaan> try Doug Church as well ^^
[22:30:58] <sol> i might already have
[22:31:00] <sol> let me check :)
[22:31:07] <Cahaan> ^^
[22:31:19] <sol> yes I tracked him down in 2007
[22:31:20] <sol> and emailed
[22:31:22] <sol> he never replied
[22:31:28] <Cahaan> dang
[22:31:35] <sol> I guessed his e-mail
[22:31:38] <sol> so it might not have been right
[22:31:41] <sol> I could resend it...
[22:32:07] <Cahaan> ok that would be surprising that he didn't want to asnwer
[22:32:25] <sol> sent
[22:32:32] <sol> well, like I said, I guessed his e-mail
[22:32:34] <sol> its not posted anywhere
[22:34:29] <sol> might not have even been a valid email
[22:34:33] <sol> though, it didnt bounce back
[22:34:56] <sol> *sends a fake email to ea.com*
[22:34:58] <Cahaan> odd
[22:34:58] <sol> we'll see :)
[22:35:04] <Cahaan> yeah
[22:36:00] <sol> nothing so far :(
[22:37:08] <Cahaan> hehe
[22:37:25] <Cahaan> maybe he's a wife, kids or something like that
[22:37:33] <Cahaan> he has*
[22:37:54] <sol> lol
[22:38:12] <sol> "Doug, I have your kids! Release the source to UW, and they will be released unharmed."
[22:38:21] <Cahaan> :D
[22:38:41] <sol> Doug: "NO! Have the kids!"
[22:38:44] <sol> :(
[22:38:47] <Cahaan> lol
[22:39:00] <Cahaan> yeah I would really love to see UW source code
[22:39:16] <Cahaan> I would feel like reading the secret equation of the universe
[22:39:52] <sol> not a single bounce from EA...looks like it just absorbed my emails :(
[22:40:01] <sol> haha, I just wanna fix it
[22:40:04] <sol> fix up that stupid inventory bug
[22:40:11] <sol> maybe make it use a database instead of proprietary files
[22:40:14] <sol> make it use XMS instead of EMS
[22:40:18] <sol> etc
[22:40:20] <Cahaan> haha yes
[22:40:22] <sol> then a windows port
[22:40:24] <sol> or a unix port
[22:40:25] <sol> i duno
[22:40:26] <Cahaan> (yeah that's not very nice from EA)
[22:40:48] <Cahaan> I've got a nice port on my Smartphone (Windows Mobile)
[22:40:56] <sol> Doug Church doesn't seem to have a blog or anything
[22:40:58] <Cahaan> that was released by Zion Interactive a few years ago
[22:41:03] <sol> yeah
[22:41:05] <sol> or IOS or something?
[22:41:08] <sol> ZIO
[22:41:11] <Cahaan> Zio yes
[22:41:35] <sol> that was Paul Neurath, involved with that
[22:41:40] <Cahaan> I wonder how they managed to have the license
[22:41:42] <Cahaan> oh really
[22:41:53] <sol> yeah, Neurath said EA had the rights to the game
[22:42:00] <sol> Spector said it was EA + maybe an insurance company
[22:42:58] <sol> it went Blue Sky Productions -> Looking Glass Studios -> Origin -> EA
[22:43:00] <sol> or something
[22:43:42] <Cahaan> yes I remember that
[22:43:57] <Cahaan> at the beginning Ultima Underworld was not supposed to happen in the Ultima world
[22:46:36] <sol> really?
[22:46:44] <sol> I guess thats why its so cool
[22:46:50] <sol> hehe
[22:48:33] <Cahaan> well Ultima 7 is equally cool and was an ultima "from scratch"
[22:49:22] <sol> I never played it
[22:49:34] <sol> I really like the first person 3d RPG of UW and I don't think any games have pulled it off since
[22:49:39] <sol> Arx is "okay"
[22:50:25] <Cahaan> I totally agree
[22:50:35] <Cahaan> UW is still my favourite game of all time
[22:50:44] <Cahaan> so deep, so complex, so intriguing
[22:50:55] <Cahaan> I was really disappointed by Arx Fatalis
[22:51:27] <Cahaan> Dark Messiah (same author) was better, but a totally different gameplay (more action-based)
[22:52:20] <sol> same here
[22:52:30] <sol> i didnt like Dark Messiah so much, I didn't play all of it either
[22:52:36] <sol> it was so linear
[22:52:43] <sol> you could really only kind of run along with the game
[22:52:46] <Cahaan> yeah, it was more a "doom-like"
[22:52:54] <sol> rather than explore and find things
[22:52:57] <Cahaan> yes it was very cinematic
[22:53:00] <Cahaan> and scripted
[22:53:06] <sol> it was always neat in UW, where you'd find little secret areas
[22:53:12] <Cahaan> but the gameplay based on physics was pretty interesting
[22:53:16] <sol> where you'd picture some warrior had died some time before and dropped his things
[22:53:19] <Cahaan> yeah UW was so "real"
[22:53:31] <Cahaan> yes it had that great feel
[22:53:34] <sol> yeah :D
[22:53:41] <sol> and the originality was neat
[22:53:48] <sol> like the ogres
[22:53:51] <Cahaan> yup...
[22:53:55] <Cahaan> still dreaming of UW3
[22:53:58] <sol> Sethar Strongarm bragging about having killed Dragons when he was young
[22:54:01] <sol> lol itll never happen
[22:54:06] <sol> unless we got the source released
[22:54:08] <sol> and had a big movement
[22:54:26] <Cahaan> or that mad lich-king in UW2, he thought that he was still alive
[22:55:09] <Cahaan> UW1 was better though, even if UW2 story was more interesting
[22:55:34] <Cahaan> UW1 is more about exploration and survival
[22:55:51] <sol> yeah
[22:55:57] <sol> I was a bit disappointed with UW2
[22:55:59] <Cahaan> I didn't really like the different worlds in UW2, they were a bit too small
[22:56:02] <sol> especially because I couldn't kill everyone
[22:56:02] <sol> :(
[22:56:07] <Cahaan> oh yes that's true
[22:56:15] <Cahaan> too bad
[22:56:25] <sol> even if it would screw up the game
[22:56:29] <sol> I like knowing I can do *whatever I want*
[22:56:38] <Cahaan> yes me too
[22:56:50] <Cahaan> The Elder Scroll series is not bad at doing this
[22:57:17] <Cahaan> when you do something bad for the main plot, you have that warning that pops up
[22:57:34] <Cahaan> but you can still do whatever you like
[22:57:47] <sol> yea
[22:57:52] <sol> I recall that from Morrowind
[22:58:02] --> pupnik has joined #uwadv
