[12:54:07] <Coren_> Merry 25th of December. :-)
[12:54:33] <wjp> happy Isaac Newton's birthday :-)
[12:54:36] <wjp> (IIRC)
[12:54:42] <Coren_> I think that's right.
[12:55:24] <Coren_> I am very very pleased; I just implemented a nifty 'ultima-like' font that is proportional and looks whunderful. :)
[12:55:40] <wjp> is it already in CVS?
[12:55:42] * wjp updates
[12:56:17] <Coren_> Not cvsed just yet (though some other stuff is because I can't update the data archives and one needs the new font file to use the patch. :(
[12:56:38] <Coren_> Unless I add the font file to cvs. Cruddy, though, 'cuz it's a png.
[12:58:23] <Coren_> Hmmm. How does one tell cvs that a file is binary again?
[12:58:31] <wjp> cvs add -kb
[12:58:52] <Coren_> The font is arguably part of the source. There. Adding it.
[12:59:27] <Coren_> Augh. data/textures/ is not part of the cvs tree.
[12:59:52] <Coren_> So I can't do that without opening up another can of worms entirely.
[13:00:12] <Coren_> Hrm.
[13:00:42] <wjp> why not host the data files on SF, btw?
[13:01:35] <Coren_> Well, I'm uncertain about how sf might like MP3's rendered from Midis that are (c) EA, and the 3d archive is even worse since it contains 3d models stolen right from UO:3D.
[13:01:48] <wjp> hm, I see
[13:02:07] <Coren_> I.e.: it's all very gray. It's dubious EA would throw a fit over any of this, but arguably this cannot be published on sf.
[13:02:42] <Coren_> And the sysadmin of the box that hosted the data files has dropped off the face of the earth, apparently.
[13:03:18] <Coren_> Oh, hell, I'll commit the source changes anyways. That's the caveat of trying to use bleeding edge code anyways. :-)
[13:03:36] <wjp> could you dcc me the font file then? :-)
[13:03:41] <Coren_> Sure.
[13:04:18] <wjp> thanks
[13:04:20] <Coren_> That belongs in data/textures/
[13:04:34] * wjp nods
[13:04:54] <Coren_> Mind you, I still need to add a couple of manual kern pairs to make it look perfect, but it's prutty good already.
[13:05:43] <Coren_> If you have a mind to it, you can add kerning pairs to the end of data/metrics1.dat
[13:08:03] <wjp> hm, nice
[13:08:17] <Coren_> I think so too. :-)
[13:08:32] <wjp> why is there sometimes a line above one of the last characters in a line?
[13:08:37] <Coren_> Making fonts is GREAT relaxation from finals. :-)
[13:08:52] <wjp> specifically in error messages
[13:09:09] <Coren_> Can you tell me exactly how I can see this?
[13:09:10] <wjp> "You cannot pick that up." has a line over the last 'u'
[13:09:16] <Coren_> Ah, hang on.
[13:09:22] <wjp> "You cannot use that." has a line over the last '.'
[13:10:38] <wjp> do you get it too or should I try a full recompile?
[13:10:45] <Coren_> Yes, I get it too.
[13:10:59] <Coren_> Figured it out, as well. Tildes. I forgot to ignore those.
[13:11:44] <Coren_> Fix commited.
[13:12:21] <wjp> k, better now :-)
[13:12:44] <Coren_> The new font looks especially nice in conversations. Courrier /really/ didn't have the right feel. :)
[13:13:11] * wjp nods :-)
[13:13:17] <wjp> it does look good in conversations, yes
[13:15:01] <wjp> did you optimize the renderer a bit?
[13:15:03] <Coren_> That code needs to be taught that the font is now proportionnal, but the average width pretty much cancel up right now.
[13:15:12] <wjp> I get a consistent >15fps in the throne room now
[13:15:24] <Coren_> I do better precaching of the models.
[13:15:35] <Coren_> (The filling bar before a level is that)
[13:16:07] <wjp> the slowdown in the throne room is definitely a lot less noticable now
[13:16:32] <Coren_> Zat is good. I don't notice as much on my setup because I'm bound by the number of polygons in there.
[13:17:29] <Coren_> But the deformed mesh cache is better organized and should show definite benifits on cpu-bound areas.
[13:18:02] <Coren_> Especially the first time one walks in; it shouldn't 'jam' as much the first time you see a model.
[13:19:18] <Coren_> Ah, and you get better performance even if I now animate the models every frame rather than every other frame. That is VERY good.
[13:23:08] <Coren_> I need a new site for the data archives. :(
[13:28:01] <wjp> hm :/
[13:30:31] * Coren_ fixes word wrapping.
[13:30:54] <Coren_> The problem already shows trivially just yb talking to Miranda after LB's speech.
[14:16:50] <Coren_> Commited: word wrap fix for proportional font, and italics for narration (well, oblique really)
[14:22:25] <wjp> what is that "happy camper"? :-)
[14:22:52] <Coren_> It's a place holder that doubles as a reference to Star Control II. :)
[14:22:55] <wjp> an unimplemented intrinsic call?
[14:23:01] <wjp> orz :-)
[14:23:05] * Coren_ chuckles.
[14:23:17] <Coren_> It is so *happy* to *smell* you again.
[14:25:36] * Coren_ commits long overdue updates to readme and changelog.
[14:29:19] <Coren_> Hello extremely! I hope you like to *Play*.
[14:29:20] <Coren_> Some *campers* are not so good for *games*.
[14:29:20] <Coren_> Is it time for *playing* yet?
[14:29:41] <wjp> Happy *pieces*! I am *squirting nice colors*!
[14:30:29] <Coren_> You are a *silly* *camper*. I am always Orz.
[14:30:29] <Coren_> If I was not Orz, then I would not be, but of course I am Orz.
[14:30:29] <Coren_> We are from *outside*. Also the Arilou *quick babies* are from *outside*.
[14:30:30] <Coren_> It is the same, but not.
[14:30:30] <Coren_> Orz are from *below*, Arilou are from *above*.
[14:30:31] <Coren_> Orz does not like Arilou. Arilou are too much trouble.
[14:30:31] <Coren_> We can not have *parties* when Arilou always *jumping in front*.
[14:30:33] <Coren_> It makes Orz *frumple* so much.
[14:30:36] <Coren_> These are *fat* words. Do you want to play this some more?
[14:31:00] <Coren_> We can quote each other to death, it seems. :-)
[14:31:05] <wjp> Arilou can *slide*. Also Taalo. Many can *slide*, but Orz are better of course.
[14:31:08] <Coren_> Orz are so much fun. :)
[14:31:15] <wjp> yeah, they are :-)
[14:31:50] <Coren_> Really creepy, but fun. :-) Arguably, the most memorable alien species in a game ever. :)
[14:32:50] <Coren_> Are you reciting from memory or quoting from orz.txt out of uqm? ;)
[14:32:58] <wjp> the latter, of course :-)
[14:33:41] <Coren_> I /could/ have quoted much before uqm came out, but this way is *better*. More *happy colors*. :)
[14:35:03] <wjp> :-)
[14:36:30] <Coren_> So, the verdict on the new font is 'cool'?
[14:36:50] <wjp> yup :-)
[14:38:18] * Coren_ ponders Arx Fatalis.
[14:38:31] <Coren_> I think I'm going to shamelessly steal a number of interface ideas from them.
[14:39:12] <Coren_> Some of it is odd, but there are a couple of neat ideas in there.
[14:40:47] <Coren_> Hmmm. Time to get ready for the mandatory family reunion(s).
[15:04:16] * Coren_ is away: family reunions
[16:52:04] <wjp> hm, is LoW legend of worlds of labyrinth of worlds? README says one thing, the homepage another
[16:52:40] <wjp> oh, btw, would you like me to add dependency tracking rules to Makefile.in?
[17:35:31] --> Dark-Star has joined #uwadv

[19:10:33] --> Eldron has joined #uwadv
[19:10:43] <Eldron> oh, crowded in here today..
[19:10:50] <wjp> :-)
[19:10:51] <wjp> hi
[19:11:00] <Eldron> hey
[22:23:36] <Eldron> blah.. Im painting the texture for the gazer model now.. and my hand hurts..
