[18:43:03] <Telemachos> evening
[18:46:13] <wjp> hi
[18:59:16] <CharlieG> ho
[19:04:11] --> phlask has joined #uwadv
[19:04:11] --- ChanServ gives channel operator status to phlask
[19:04:45] <wjp> hi
[19:05:10] <phlask> hi wjp
[19:05:55] <phlask> is CharlieG a bot by any chance?
[19:07:01] <wjp> nah
[19:08:04] <phlask> hmm
[19:10:33] <phlask> wjp... the timestamps in the uwadv log aren't right
[19:10:54] <wjp> they aren't?
[19:11:00] <wjp> seem ok to me
[19:11:21] <wjp> off by a few seconds maybe, but I can live with that :-)
[19:11:49] <phlask> where is the server it runs on located then?
[19:12:13] <wjp> times are in GMT as the top of the page says
[19:12:15] <wjp> server is in Leiden
[19:13:11] <phlask> oh darn
[19:13:47] <phlask> GMT... stupid me
[19:14:30] <wjp> :-)
[19:15:45] <phlask> seems to me like the TwistSoft remake is pretty much dead
[19:17:14] <phlask> they haven't updated their website or the demo's in a long long time and the forums don't seems to be all that popular either
[19:17:52] <Telemachos> did they ever release a demo ?
[19:18:08] <phlask> hi Telemachos
[19:19:08] <Telemachos> hi :=
[19:19:22] <phlask> yes... some sort of small tech demo to demonstrate their engine... just a single room with UW1-like textures IIRC
[19:20:07] <Telemachos> ooooh... I remember.. not terribly good was it ? and only a room and a corridor or something
[19:20:19] <phlask> yes indeed
[19:21:11] <wjp> I don't suppose it runs on linux?
[19:21:38] <phlask> nah just Win32
[19:25:14] <Telemachos> hmm it say their website was updated today ;)
[19:25:31] <Telemachos> doh ;) forget I said that ;)
[19:25:48] <Telemachos> was some asp code to display time or something ;)
[19:26:01] <phlask> latest news "July 21: No we are not dead"... no indeed :)
[19:26:40] <phlask> They are probably too busy browsing through the uwadv source code right now ;)
[19:26:57] <wjp> lol
[19:28:37] <Telemachos> he heh... poor them ;)
[19:29:45] <phlask> Oh well... there is still the Morrowind mod team... maybe they are more committed
[19:30:40] <wjp> let me guess... windows-only too?
[19:31:34] <Telemachos> I think uwadv and the MOD project are very different ;) one is just trying to be cross-platform and do minor improvements... the other is more "remaking" the game
[19:31:50] <phlask> well... it is a mod for the game Morrowind. I don't know much about that game though, but I guess it is only for Win32 (and maybe OSX)
[19:32:15] <Telemachos> who knows, maybe my own UW engine should see the light of the day one more time ;)
[19:33:06] <phlask> sure why not :)
[19:35:06] <phlask> The mod project is extremely ambitious though... they have to implement *every* aspect of the game themselves, if they plan to keep the gameplay the same that is
[19:35:20] <Telemachos> actually I just wrote a plugin for my U1 engine today to allow it to import UW1 levels... I did it to test how physics would feel in the levels (collision, jumping etc)..
[19:35:36] <Telemachos> it got me kinda hooked on the whole UW engine deal again ;)
[19:36:26] <Telemachos> Its extremly amazing how much of the data-files Jim has been able to decode... that man is insane ;)
[19:37:23] <phlask> well... in a positive way that is :) Too bad he is more a Shock-man
[19:38:54] <Telemachos> never played shock1 much.. but I liked sshock2
[19:39:00] <phlask> same here :)
[19:39:24] <phlask> I never did like the respawning of monsters though
[19:40:05] <Telemachos> no, that was also something that annoyed me.. but I think there was a (secret?) setting so you could turn the rate down
[19:40:36] <phlask> yes... it isn't really secret either: it is in the readme of the patch IIRC
[19:40:39] <CharlieG> hmm origin were the best in those days... sshock, ultima, uw, bioforge (what a game that was)
[19:40:49] <phlask> LG was that is :)
[19:40:52] <CharlieG> wing commander
[19:42:04] <Telemachos> oooh.. the first Wing commander was actually loads of fun ;)
[19:42:21] <phlask> yeah... have you ever tried running it on a modern system :)
[19:42:29] <Telemachos> remember playing with joystick and all.. think thats the only game I've ever used a joystick for on the PC
[19:42:41] <phlask> you *will* go faster than the speed of light I promise you
[19:42:46] <Telemachos> lol
[19:43:49] <phlask> I have yet to find a game that gave me the same great sensation as the first time I played UW1 though...
[19:44:26] <phlask> only very few games came close
[19:44:43] <Telemachos> I think I played UW1 and U6 at about the same time.. both very good games..
[19:45:10] <Telemachos> but my best ultima experience so far must have been U7-SI
[19:45:42] <phlask> I must admit I didn't even know about Ultima until I played UW1... and only got to see U7 for the first time a few years back (yes, shame on me I know)
[19:46:00] <Telemachos> now that game REALLY hooked me... I dont think its possible for me to get that hooked again (might also have something to do with my age now but the memories of that game :)
[19:47:43] <CharlieG> elder scrolls was addictive
[19:47:49] <CharlieG> but endless
[19:47:50] <phlask> A 3D U7 would be a nice follow-up project to U1
[19:48:06] <CharlieG> :P it would be good
[19:48:10] <Telemachos> he heh... yeah right ;)
[19:48:14] <CharlieG> g'night
[19:48:16] <-- CharlieG has left #uwadv ("Client Exiting")
[19:48:52] <phlask> oh well... who knows, maybe some day :)
[19:49:34] <Telemachos> Unless there was some way of using the original usecode in the 3d version ... but (without knowing too much about it) that sounds unlikely
[19:50:12] <phlask> Yes, it would be a tremendous job to get it exactly right
[19:50:44] <Telemachos> but luckily we have Exult ;) Do you know if SI can be completed without problems in Exult now ?
[19:51:23] <phlask> I guess wjp knows more about that
[19:53:19] <phlask> Can you recommend any good new-ish 3D RPGs by any chance? I haven't played any (new) game since DeusEx...
[19:54:02] <phlask> I haven't even played U9 - but from all the bad reviews I've read I wonder if I should even bother
[19:54:30] <Telemachos> sure... Gothic ;)
[19:54:41] <Telemachos> the best 3d RPG I've played since UW probably ;)
[19:55:13] <phlask> Hmm, never heard of it...
[19:55:15] <Telemachos> Actually I didnt find U9 that bad when I played it
[19:55:55] <Telemachos> Gothic is made by a german team.. I actually played the german version - and still completed it (should show how good the game is.. my german isnt too good)
[19:56:03] <Telemachos> but now there is also an english version..
[19:56:26] <phlask> how old is it?
[19:56:54] <Telemachos> http://www.piranha-bytes.com/
[19:57:01] <phlask> thanks :)
[19:57:11] <Telemachos> maybe a year or so.. a little more probably
[19:58:10] <phlask> Arx seems like a nice game too... but I will definitely need a *much* faster system befor I'm going to purchase that game
[19:59:32] <phlask> well... I'm too busy coding to play games anyhow nowadays :)
[20:00:39] <Telemachos> Arx *sounds* nice ... but the demo I tried was extremly buggy
[20:00:53] <phlask> yes... that is what I've heard too
[20:01:23] <phlask> the game itself should be better... and I believe that there is also a patch coming up
[20:01:44] <Telemachos> no new game without a patch ;)
[20:02:04] <phlask> but many bugs can really spoil all the fun in a game
[20:02:33] <phlask> all the more reason to make sure that uwadv won't contain any :)
[20:02:43] <Telemachos> naturally ;=)
[20:02:52] <phlask> :)
[20:03:00] <phlask> hmm... I talked with vividos earlier about the possibility of replacing all 2D sprites with 3D models in uwadv
[20:03:16] <Telemachos> for the items ?
[20:03:22] <phlask> and critters
[20:03:37] <Telemachos> thats alot of 3d models to make.. who should build them ?
[20:03:49] <phlask> not me or vividos that's for sure :)
[20:04:02] <Telemachos> he heh..
[20:04:11] <phlask> but if we could find one or two 3D designers it would be an option
[20:04:24] <Telemachos> well, I would suggest to keep the items as sprites.. if anything should go 3d it should be the critters
[20:04:47] <phlask> yes the critters look really bad when you get close to them
[20:05:10] <Telemachos> also the 15 or so 3d models in the .exe ... they could be remodelled.. probably easier than decoding the data from the exe
[20:05:26] <phlask> agreed
[20:07:03] <Telemachos> oh well ... gotta run ;) cya later in here..
[20:07:12] <phlask> bye!
